GameCube games can be downloaded on Wii U |
Listed in: News Tags: GameCube, Nintendo
When the Wii U was introduced at Nintendo's press conference at E3, many were wondering how come they were not making the new hardware backwards compatiblw with the GameCube. Although this feature may be missing, there is still a way for you to enjoy your GameCube games on it, so reassured Amber McCollom.
The Director of Entertainment & Trend Marketing at Nintendo of America expounded on this alternative in a recent interview.
"You know, it's interesting that you bring up backwards compatibility and Nintendo's history usually goes back one system," he started. "The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that's pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo."
While that may be the case, though, with GameCube discs not being compatible with Wii U, "a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare."
So that still gives you an avenue to continue enjoying your favorite GameCube classics on their new console.
The Wii U remains to be in development, and was recently confirmed to be donning "Gameboy-like" dev controllers. As to how powerful it's going to be, there's going to be "plenty of horsepower there," guaranteed Marvin Donald of Nintendo.

PS: "and that's pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo."
The Gamecube didn't play N64 games and the N64 didn't play SNES games. That trend isn't "traditional" at all. It wasn't until the Wii that we saw a Nintendo console with backwards compatibility.

The same applies for N64 playing SNES games..

Wii was compatible with Gamecube
DS was compatible with GBA
DSi was compatible with DS
3DS is compatible with DS and DSi
I would have to say it's now traditional that Nintendo does this. They've been doing it for 7 years now.

i know it is a bit diferent but n64 and snes was able to run gb games and ngc was able to run gba games.
but oddly they gave up the ds and wii conection of some sort and prefered make vc.
lil side note the dsi isnt a new console, just one of the 3 ds redesign (a bit like in the bga era that had the gba the gba micro and gba sp)

Yep, that must have been a stretch to make the DSi compatible with DS games, LOL

"A single generation a tradition does not make."
NES - SNES
GB - GBC
GBA - DS
GC - Wii
GC/Wii - WiiU
SNES / N64
N64 / GC
At the times that there wasn't B/C, it seems they were experimenting with different types of media storage, so it's not unusual for them not to have B/C.
Also the number of B/C systems the had outnumbers that of non B/C(not even counting the variations: DSi, etc.)

I'm sure believing counts.
Just to count, we have:
One guess
Two Handhelds
Zero that aren't Gamecube and higher.
It's not traditional for Nintendo consoles to be backwards compatable. It's only happened once. When the WiiU is released it will have happened twice.

Why? Because I normally trade my old console to get a discount for the new one.

Although I find it hilarious that so many people claim to HATE the gamecube and how shitty it was yet now there will be tons of people whining about not being able to play it anymore. Maybe they'll be smart enough to keep their Wii around or go find a gamecube off ebay.....maybe.
Haters gonna hate.

Last gen has way better games and quality than the current one.
I still play NES to this day, on its original form.

Try again.

You'll as in "me"? Nope, you are wrong. "I" have found games that are more fun.
Maybe it has the most fun games "YOU" have ever found. Maybe the same the same for others, but not everyone on the planet.
Nice try though...

Nintendo tried to get good games on the Gamecube. They did, I first purchased a gamecube in 2006 and found many games just as good as PS2 and XBOX releases. They even had many good exclusives.
With the Wii, nintendo tried to sell gimmicks and make full blown retail releases out of them.

Instead of adding features they remove, it's like Nintendo is becoming Sony.

Tekken 3 on my PS3 Slim plays slow, though.
It shouldn't, PS3 has better hardware than PS1.

Nintendo wiped out gameboy and gameboy color compatibility with the gameboy advance SP, so people expected it would not be restored with the DS.
There's your explanation.

1. Re-buy them.
2. Keep your Wii along side your WiiU.
3. Spend $20 and buy a used gamecube.

I paid $10 for my gamecube, btw.
