Today is the day of Nintendo's big Wii U event here in America, which means in just a few short hours the news sites will be abuzz with all kinds of information about the company's latest unique console offering. Yesterday however, Japan had its own event in celebration of the release, and we learned a whole mess of details that might offer us gamers on the other side of the world just a little bit of a preview of what we can expect from our own launch announcements. If you don't want spoilers, stay away from this one.

When it comes to the hardware itself, the major Wii U console configurations look to be coming in two different varieties of 8GB and 32GB. The basic system as it is called will come in the classic Wii white color, while the premium 32GB machine will show its stuff in a shiny black case. That way, if you're a gamer in Japan at least, all of your buddies will know who has the biggest paycheck in their group. If you pay the extra money. Nintendo wants to make sure your console looks cooler than all of the others. In addition to this appearance offering, it is supposed that the console will also work with Wii titles as well as the Wiimote, balance board, and steering wheel right out of the box. Backwards compatibility fans rejoice!

Lastly of course comes the details on exactly how much this is going to set you back. I'm going to do my best with exchange rates here, so I'll be the first to admit these may not be too close to US prices. The basic model however, is set to retail for 26,250 yen which roughly equals about $300. If you're looking to go premium though, it will cost you 31,500 yen (about $400.) These numbers do look a little on the high side for Nintendo's usual pricing, but the way I see it they are most likely pretty close to what we'll be seeing.

Japanese gamers can get their hands on this infamous console on December 8th!  Who's excited for the US details?

UPDATE: US Launch price is $299 for basic and $349.99 for premium
