To say Nintendo had a rough year is an understatement for the Big N. When you go more than a decade without posting a financial loss and then announce a new console and release a console in the same year and people don't start pushing their wallets in your hand you know something is up.

Michael Pachter, renowned games analyst has put forward that with a lack of third party support the Wii U could buckle under it's own weight and spell the end of Nintendo. Pachter has said "Nintendo has to simply stop living in the past in 2012." Pachter praised Nintendo's choices in the past but has said bluntly that they have been doing so well due to the "third party support based upon the large installed base they generated for their hardware" and Pachter simply thinks Wii U does not have that (yet).

Pachter supports his predictions in saying that Nintendo "trying to be different with their...controller...[has lead them] to complicated game design for developers..." as they don't know if they are supporting "one or multiple controllers." Nintendo have prided themselves on simple controllers and great game design but have not lead much to help developers in showing how their games can and will be played.

I think Pachter is right and many would attest to the idea that a key contributor to having great game consoles is the amount and type of games they have on release. The wide range of games released initially for the Wii weren't great (See: Red Steel) but they did give us a great amount of options to play from the get go and showed us what the future of Motion Controls could do. Meanwhile Wii U has showed nothing of great gameplay short of, don't bug people who want to watch TV, so play it on this tablet. It's not a great controller, just a great feature and Wii U may be a wait-and-see console for me.  But Pachter is right on the lack of good third-party so far. E3 may prove both of us wrong.

I think he may be right about 3rd party support but I believe that 1st party titles will still be a system seller. Nintendo's 1st party titles such as Mario and Zelda have always been the real reason behind their success, rather than any other games. 3rd party support is still important though so it will be interesting to see how they fare from a lack of it.

Why, thank you. Indeed but the 1st party is not the stronger to make console/portable successfully. A third party is a key and can help 1st party to be successful as well. Without 3rd party then it is worthless.

If it is true then the first party will be fail as well because the third party is main most important to keep system alive and running. I dont trust Analyst and the Analyst is full of negative and sickening! They made me want to vomit. I am sure that Wii U will support by 3rd party thanks to HD and much powerful than PS3 and 360. Wait and see. I am not going to buy it for other a year or two to see how stronger 3rd party is. A money is a wise spending so I will save and wait.

I don't understand where he is coming from. Nintendo has never relied on 3rd party support for their consoles. It's their flagship games that carry them, and third party titles that provide reinforcement. I'm suprised by his assessment, as Epic Games have already announced their support for the system, and it has been said that SDKs have been out to core developers for a while now. To me it seemed that the Wii U was already set to have great third party support to make up for the alienation that developers felt with the Wii, due to outdated hardware and the motion controls.

What I mean is that the Wii was considered outdated hardware when it came out. As for the SDK not working, I can't find anything on it.. Can you post a link?

Well, I dont know about it. Anyway, dont understand where I came from ? You are being silly.

I didnt say anything about Nintendo. I think that 3rd is most important part of consoles. A first party like Nintendo doesnt mean anything to me. A third party should be part of it and that is why PS3 and 360 are so successfully thanks to 3rd party. Thats what I am saying.

The 3rd party support is based in how many consoles a company sells. If for example wiiU sells up to 2-3-4-5 million consoles, thats what a video game company with a good name, is looking for.. money..

And nintendo always sales.. I hope so, that nintendo will allow more 3rd party support this time and we may also see better pc games because of it.

I think they will either lose or gain 3rd party devs when the PS4 or xbox 720(idk) get released.

It may or may not since some devs like using older technology.

considering both of them are just doing major refinements to thier consoles i doubt there will be much of a need to move from ps3/360 that quickly aside from the consoles being made from the ground up compatible with their add on tech move/kinect which doesnt work well in small rooms

I really like this site too. Enough is enough. Who do I contact to voice my thoughts on the ads?:(

people seem to forget...
Wii U is compared to 360 and ps3. So let me ask, Wii U graphical abilities is only slightly above ps3. This is no different then Wii's situation, where it was slightly more powerful then xbox and instead of some games in 480p, all games will be. Honestly sony and microsoft are steps ahead of em, and 3rd party support now, 3ds looks like it has right now, but look how every 3rd party game is on it so far (but monster hunter case). PS Vita has alot more promise for 3rd party. Nintendo 3ds selling games are really exclusives and any game released for it and vita, will be a better game on vita. once they see that. 3ds will have abunch of shovelware like ds. & vita will have all the stuff like re, call of duty, assassins creed already shows more interest in vita etc. but it will be the same console wise, because the xbox and ps will be steps ahead of wii u in the time they come and devs don't like to do a dumb down version and a high rate version of the same games

No you wrong, wiiU is 4-5 times stronger than ps3, it has IBM power 7 cpu and 1.5 gig of ram.. half ram and 1 shared vram. Also it comes with 3 usb ports for hdd support, 8 gigs for saves, 50gigs cds and if you search the ps3 or xbox360 hardware, it has nothing to do with this consoles..

Are you ok boy? Shall I remind that even 2 years ago the only thing sony claimed was the blu-ray hahahaha.. and you speak about 3rd party support and sales? VITA? even if they name it zita.. doesnt matter. Playstation network is a bad feature for this console, (10 euro for tetris, oh dear) and the built quality blows away sony. Sony has a tradition for good performance and cheap materials. So dont compare the leader in handheld consoles with sony.. at all.. plz

"spell the end of Nintendo"

Did pachter actually say that? If so then he is a bigger tool then I have thought before.

3rd party support isn't needed for the success of any product. If he thinks otherwise then how the hell does he have a job?

"spell the end of Nintendo"

He also said the gamecube was killing Nintendo.

He also said the Wii was going to kill Nintendo.

STFU pachter.

The only "Analyst" you ever present is this douche bag, as if only his opinion matters. Get someone new and non-biased. The Wii U looks to have fantastic third party support. I, for one, "predict" that the Wii U will be just as big as Wii.

I remember thinking that an article or two ago about him. WTF does QJ only report on this douche? Maybe it's because there's no such thing as a video game analyst.

This guy probably blogs from his grandmothers basement.

Pachter is a noob. And Nintendo generation will never let Nintendo fail. I gave up buying xbox and ps3 products as they harm my pc gaming experience, bad.. Also they dont know how to make a console, this things are not in his predictions, because probably pachter is a paid employee.. Good luck with you Pachter..

I will support wiiU and considering that its a very bad timing for sony to anounce a ps4, also for microsoft due to halo 4... The wii U success as it is 4-5 times stronger than ps3, it sounds like we pc gamers we also may see better games (imports) in the near feature.

Not to reffer that Sony and Microsoft are rooqies with consoles and they always need 2-3 years to balance their consoles, so Wii U got up to 4-5 years clean field to prove the oposite than pachter hopes..
