The Wii U Gamepad: Best Hardcore Controller? |

Ever since the launch of the original Wii, Nintendo's image in the gaming industry has changed drastically. With their love for motion controls, they championed a philosophy that encouraged everyone and their mother to get into gaming. To there eternal credit, they have pretty much succeeded at doing so. Still, would you believe me if I told you that the Big N might just appeal to hardcore gamers once again? According to Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, he thinks the Wii U touchpad can do that.

Gearbox is a name that's mostly known these days for their little shooter game called Borderlands 2. That being said, you wouldn't necessarily expect them to be entirely on board with a console mainly concerned around the use of touchpads. Considering most mobile and tablet efforts into the genre have been mediocre at best, it seems that that kind of game just may not succeed in that control scheme, However, the company prez happens to say differently. "This is the best controller Nintendo's ever made for making [a first-person shooter]," he says. "This is the best controller Nintendo has ever given us for playing hardcore games."
On top of that potential Randy also admires Nintendo's continuing commitment to their ideas as well. After all, we first saw the two-screen experience emerge almost half a decade ago with the release of the DS, and now this month they are finally bringing that multi-display concept into our living rooms. While he sights Microsoft as an example of a company that changes their visions too often, Pitchford sees Nintendo as a truly committed gaming powerhouse. It will be interesting to see how Gearbox's claims match up when they release their own game called Aliens: Colonial Marines in February!

On a side note:
I like how Nintendo mass released motion controls and everyone called it gimmicky. Then Sony and Microsoft rushed to get out their own motion controls. Nintendo then went on to be the most successful console of that gen. Yet people still call Nintendo's (and only Nintendo's!) controller nothing but a gimmick.
The same shit will happen with this. Meanwhile countless millions will enjoy the hell out of it.

While we may butt heads when it comes to our phones heheh, you are absolutely correct my friend. especially the PS move! At least MS did something slightly different with the Kinect. But like you said, everyone knocked on the Wii for its motion controls, but yet look who was quick to follow.

For the most part, all of these motion controllers are just more peripherals that collect dust.
I guarantee that the Wii U wil sell well, and then Microsoft and Sony will put out similar tablets. It's the way the industry works. And then, once again, people will have goofy tablets collecting dust in their entertainment centers next to their motion controllers and plastic guitars.

"Wii sucked and the console suffered"
LOL! It's amazing how clueless some people can be.
"people gave up on it."
I'm not sure which is funnier. The first one or this one. Yeah, people gave up on it which is why the controller will continue to live on.

it will live on because people will buy it for kids or the elderly or for others who don't know that there are better methods to play games and/or better controllers with much better precision. Nintendo doesn't care if people give up on it, as long as they plunk down their money to buy it. They will release their usual slew of titles that people wil want to play, like Zelda, Mario, etc. Maybe the 3rd party is better and it catches on, but odds are, the hardcore segment (which is the whole target audience behind that gamepad tablet) will stick to their current consoles, or choose the next gen to their current loyalties in a few years when the PS4 or Xbox720 come out because they usually prefer that system's console-specific games.

No it didn't.
Just because you have an OPINION that doesn't make your opinion reality for the rest of the world.
Yesterday was errand for me and I sent to Target, Best Buy, Walmart and Gamestop. I saw tons of Sony, MS and Nintendo games in the bargain bin. Also, NONE of them were $10.
See how reality works?
As for your second paragraph. I stopped reading that nonsense after kids and elderly. If you think only kids and elderly people play the Wii then you're completely ignorant.

People are going to like it though I think. The real question for Nintendo is still going to be third-party support but I have to say I do like this idea initially better than I did the Wii.

They have the highest amount of market share on both consoles and mobile (between the three).
