Back in the day, the difference between 8-bit and 16-bit machines can already be considered a jump from one generation to another. Today, some people will complain if a character model in a next-gen console doesn't have millions more pixels than the last game they touched. However, as most of us know, eye-bleeding graphics don't equate to high-quality games; developer Q-Games is aware of that, and decided to go back to 2D when things were simple.
Q-Games President and Executive Producer Dylan Cuthbert gathered a team just to create games reminiscent to the quirky style of ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 titles. Their latest entry for PSN is PixelJunk Racers, which Cuthbert is very proud of. On the Official PlayStation Blog, Cuthbert defined their upcoming game as "a quirky little slot car style racing game with lots of weird rules and conditions." Find out how weird exactly by watching the video below.

For the guys unfamiliar with the game, Boulder Dash was originally created in the 80s for the Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Atari 400/800 home computers. The game puts players behind the controls of Rockford, whose job is to dig through caves collecting gems and diamonds while avoiding hostile creatures and falling rocks. Secure the gantries, adjust your seat-belts, and brace for it - Rare Ltd.'s Jetpac Refuelled for the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) has just been dated for launch this March 28. For those asking, the challenge of the game is to control Jetman as he assembles his rocket, refuels it, then heads for another planet. Jetman also has to fend off constantly evolving aliens who aren't too happy about him taking their resources as he lands on new levels. The original game was developed by Ultimate Play The Game for the ZX Spectrum home computer back in 1983. This version from Rare Ltd. of Jetpac Refuelled for the XBLA will feature high-definition graphics, over 100 brand new levels, and Xbox Live features such as co-operative play, leaderboards, and achievements. The game will cost 400 Microsoft Points (US$ 5), will come with 12 achievements and 200 Gamerpoints, and will include the original Jetpac game to offer gamers a proverbial blast from the past. |

For the older gamers who actually were able to play the ZX Spectrum classic, this might bring tears to your eyes. We have a minute-long gameplay video for Rare's Jetpac Refuelled.
Jetpac Refuelled is set to blast to an Xbox360 near you, though this still has "yet to be announced" stamped all over it. The original gameplay was preserved (assemble the spaceship, gather fuel, and blast off - the ultimate DIY space style) while graphics were given a major overhaul. We'll let you see for yourself through the video. We'll keep you posted on further developments on Jetpac Refuelled for XBLA once they become available. For the meantime, enjoy! |

Another blast from the past comes to Xbox Live Arcade. Literally. Jetpac Refuelled has been given a makeover by Rare, the original developers of the game (aka Ultimate Play The Game). The original ZX Spectrum classic and first of the Jetman series is also included in the game. More Jetpac Refuelled screens right after the jump! |

Jetpac Refuelled on Rare's XBLA is a remake of the the ZX Spectrum classic Jetpac. It's the same game with updated graphics and 100 levels. So for those not old enough to remember how it plays, it's quite simple. All you have to do is collect spaceship parts, construct the spaceship, and gather fuel. Of course there will be enemies trying to stop you from accomplishing your goals. For the older gamers, this should prove to be a refreshing blast from the past. |
