Sierra Entertainment has revealed new videos for SWAT: Target Liberty, featuring authentic weapons you'll be taking baddies down with and snippets of the game's mission briefings. After watching the trailers, we'll have to say SWAT: Target Liberty for the Sony PlayStation Portable is locked and loaded with all the SWAT action you'll ever need.
Like other SWAT games, there's a plethora of weapons to choose from. The Benelli M4 Super90, Sig SG552 Commando, and other sweet firearms are present to make the gun savvy swoon. We see them being used a lot, while keeping tactical squad-based elements intact. The Mission Briefing trailer gives us a glimpse at how missions roll in SWAT: Target Liberty. Objectives are laid out, and you'll find out which ones you nailed when the operation is over. Instead of more teasing, we'll just leave you with the video below.

Coming this fall from Sierra Entertainment and Vivendi Games is SWAT: Target Liberty, the first PSP entry in the popular tactical shooter series. Firing Squad recently had a chat with the game's producer Paul Pawlicki to get some inside info on the game.
SWAT: Target Liberty is a shooter, so of course it has to have an impressive array of guns. "No need to worry about firepower," said Pawlicki. "SWAT: Target Liberty has plenty of it." Sierra lucked out on getting 3G Studios, who had physical access to each of the weapons used in the game, as a developer. Pawlicki noted that 3G's authentic representations add "a really nice touch" to SWAT: Target Liberty. Alright, so the guns look real, but what weapons will the players have access to? "Players will get to select from authentic SWAT weapons, like the SIG's SG 551-SWAT, a gas-operated weapon conceived specifically for Special Forces and elite units," said Pawlicki. "There's also the SSG 300, FN303, Benelli M2 and tactical grenades to choose from but as a player progresses through the game's unlockable weapons are made available including the FnH P90 and the Benelli M4 Super 90 to name a few." As for multiplayer, 3G has designed a random level generator to keep up to four players on their toes in the game's head to head multiplayer mode. SWAT: Target Liberty's AI also look impressive, with the inclusion of a morale system for the enemies. "Take too long in a firefight and they will begin to flank you and become less likely to give up," Pawlicki explained. "If you take out a few of men out then you will see them retreat and start to give up more easily."
Pawlicki also assured shooter fans that SWAT: Target Liberty is right on track for its fall release. There's currently nothing in development at the moment, but Pawlicki said that "could easily make the leap from PC to next-gen consoles and provide a fun, tactical shooter experience unlike any other game out there." |

Sometimes, it's the simple things that rock. The Swiss-made Sig-550 assault rifle for example swapped out standard issue tin rifle mags for a clear-plastic set, which not only made the gun lighter and more reliable (plastic doesn't dent like tin, hence less jams), but also allowed the trooper using it to just take a glance at the mag to see how much ammo he had left without having to rack the bolt and yank out the mag, as with what Solid had to do in his trailer (You know you want one, Snake).
As far-fetched as it sounds, we were thinking that when we picked up this short video clip cannae45 posted over at youtube. Nothing fancy here - he just remade his PSP UMD door with a viewing port, which allowed the user to get an eyeful of the UMD's metal cradle, and the title of whatever game he pops into the console. Sure, it ain't as pimpin' as a light-up door, or even a PSP port of the PS2 analog stick, but like we said, there's an elegance to subtle but practical mods like these we love. Enjoy the vid. |

USB is everywhere. Those tried and tested cables connect anything from iPods and Keyboards, to Coffee Hotplates and Lava Lamps. Wires, wires, and wires everywhere. By the end of this year though, people could come up to help you rid that clutter of wires weaving around your desktop. The WiMedia Alliance is planing to make the technology known as "ultrawideband," or UWB, work for a wide variety of consumer electronics devices from PCs and printers to external hard drives and MP3 players. Basically, the USB Implementers Forum, the 1394 Trade Association and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) have chosen the WiMedia Alliance's version of UWB technology as the foundation for their next networking technology. UWB technology can deliver data rates at up to 480 megabits per second at around 3 meters, with speeds dropping off as the range grows to a limit of about 10 meters. Real-world speeds will probably be a little slower, but this is as fast as the wired version of USB 2.0 and much faster than current Wi-Fi networks are capable of transmitting data. Okay, so back then there was a "paperless office" movement, now it's "wireless office." Yeah, we know, it's the march of the machines. One of the selling points of USB though is that it can "power" the many devices that it also serves as a data connection medium too. How will they do that wireless? When they figure that out, they better make that work with the PS3 controller's USB connector... or something. |

"The impact review scores have on predicting sales is not as significant as previously thought. Obviously, it does impact sales, but there are far more useful indicators such as when the game is released, the franchise’s history," says Jason Kraft of SIG, the research company that made the report. Despite the results of the survey, SIG said game reviews are probably here to stay. The report claims many investors have learned to rely on game reviews and game ratings can make or break developers. The game industry also considers game ratings as its very reason for living. But as one writer once said, "A bad review is even less important than whether it is raining in Patagonia". |
