Business PC manufacturer Dell was notably mustering a workforce for their consumer product unit from other industries, most specifically the handset and electronics manufacturing industry. After their acquisition of Alienware, these new moves became apparent after former CEO Kevin Rollins resigned.

Michael Dell - founder and CEO of Dell - Image 1With founder Michael Dell back at the chair of CEO, Dell recently recruited Ron Garriques, head of Motorola's handset group, and Michael Cannon, former CEO of Solectron. Garriques will run a new consumer product unit while Cannon will lead the unit's manufacturing operations.

Michael Dell said:

We are asking Ron to create a new global consumer organization that will set new standards for innovative product design, leadership in providing the best customer experience, and flexibility in how we build and distribute products and services to meet the evolving needs of our customers around the world.

After providing business catered solutions, this surprising move for Dell might have something to do with the new mobile game device they mentioned some time back.

Whatever they do have planned, it's now focused more on the consumer market.

motorazr v3m redLast May, we reported on the teamup of U.S. Cellular, Motorola, and the Global Fund to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. Today, U.S. Cellular and Motorola holds up their end of the sky, announcing that the RED MOTORAZR V3m is now available to support the same cause.

The MOTORAZR V3m is the first in a series of products in the United States to support the Global Fund, as well as to raise awareness in order to help the people of Africa fight AIDS. For every handset sold, US $17 will be directly contributed to the fund by the companies.

Says Ron Garriques, president of Motorola Mobile Devices, "Motorola is thrilled to bring U.S. Cellular into our partnership with (RED) and the Global Fund... Together, we are offering consumers the opportunity to make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa and create real change in the world."

On the other hand, U.S. Cellular is the first wireless carrier in the nation to offer the RED MOTORAZR with the same cause for motivation.

The mobile itself makes a striking statement with its ultra-thin design, aircraft grade aluminum housing and spun metal keypad. With features like the (RED) screen savers, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera with 4x digital zoom and video capture, playback and streaming, this mobile was meant to make heads turn. And hopefully, with all the joint efforts of these companies and foundation, it will also help fill heads with the proper awareness on the disease, as well as concern for those affected with it.

The Motorola RED MOTORAZR V3m is now available at MOTO(RED) Chicago through U. S. Cellular for US $79.95, with a two-year contract. For those who would wish to have a handset upgrade, they can purchase the mobile for the same price. As for its availability in U.S. Cellular stores across the country, expect it to paint the town red by November.

Now that's being red hot with a cause.

Motorola QWe earlier reported that you could get the latest Motorola baby, the Q, for just $170. Well, if you are the type who believes in the saying "the best things in life happen to those who wait", and you're willing to wait till the year's end...then you can purchase a Moto Q for the low, low price of just $50.

This was said by Ron Garriques during a keynote speech at the 17th Annual Bear Stearns Conference. Mr. Garriques is the president of Motorola's Mobile Division. In the same speech, he mentioned that initial sales of Q are strong and running at a similar rate as the initial run-rate of RAZR. In addition, he expects the subsidized price of Q (from carriers) to decline from $199 to about $50 by end of this year owing to volume improvements.

The Illinois-based company also expects to launch a UMTS version of Q by the year-end, when its exclusivity ends with Verizon. If we lost you in the UMTS part of the sentence, UMTS stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, and is sometimes marketed as 3GSM- a combination of 3G and GSM.

Garriques emphasied Motorola’s significant IP portfolio as one of the key factors that will enable them to lead the market in terms of cost as other handset vendors must pay licensing fees to IP owners, including Motorola. This development would pose a negative impact on PALM and RIMM's stocks.
