VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

Just Cause is a massively open-ended game from Eidos and Avalanche Studios. It's massive in terms of size: the game play area is over a thousand square kilometers large. It's massive in terms of effects: explosions, light glancing off objects under the hot sun, and what looks like pretty good motion blur on chopper blades. So, it only makes sense that we offer you this here massive video: a 22.1-something MB HD weapons upgrade video (dial-up and slow Internet users beware!).

What to expect from this video:
  • It begins with "Everyone should get a chance to update arsenal..." and Latino music
  • Then our man Rico Rodriguez shows how to use the pistol
  • Then he blows people away with the double pistol
  • And (because Yoda was wrong when he said "Size matters not"), he gets out the machine gun (the scene opens with him parachuting down to a bridge and laying down a wave of cover fire)
  • Sniper rifle (hard, long, and deadly)
  • Rocket launcher (harder, longer, and deadlier)
Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to watch Once Upon a Time in Mexico and polish up on our accents. Viva la Revolucion!

Just CauseIn the run-up to Just Cause's late September release, BlogCritics.org sat down with Just Cause Creative Director Christofer Sundberg and Technical Director Linus Blomberg to discuss the game. Discuss they did, and the interview revealed just how ambitious they were in creating this game.

Like, for example, eliminating loading times while offering a big free-play environment over a thousand square kilometers big. The Avalanche Studios team behind the game essentially programmed a "streaming" game environment that contiuously loads itself in the background. What's even more ambitious is that this is done on all the release platforms - the high-spec Xbox 360 as well as lower-end PCs, the PS2, and Xbox. Of course the low-end versions cut down on graphics resolutions, but it is still the same game environment and gameplay, Linus assures.

Christofer explains how Just Cause was born - an idea for a free-play game with lots of vehicles in it, with its Caribbean setting finalized over a few drinks of rum at the bar (rum and the Caribbean... how appropriate!) - and the initial scketches of its lead character Rico Rodriguez. He also reveals that the team was inspired and influenced by a lot of old movies, news, documentaries, and comic books when designing the game. To those who've noted that Just Cause feels like GTA, James Bond, and Far Cry thrown together, Cristofer also says that they weren't looking in those directions while designing this game. "I think Just Cause stands on its own two legs."

Both confirm that they're kicking around ideas for a Rico sequel, but right now there's another project on Avalanche's plate.

Just CauseMeet the sexy ladies from the side of San Esperito that (we bet) will surely make Just Cause gameplay more "hot". Complete with sultry looks, these ladies should never be underestimated as they are as lethal as you can imagine. Armed with different armaments, the femme fatale from the island nation of San Esperito can give the steamy, action-packed adventure that is Just Cause.

With Rico Rodriguez in their midst, the mini video can give you a sample of what these lusty ladies can do in the name of power and money - take part in odd drug cartel, a few million dollar deal, and blast anybody who comes in their way. Just Cause is slated to be released on September 22 of this year in Europe, and September 26 in North America. Being developed by Avalanche Studios, Just Cause already has a demo released and Eidos is touting the game to be huge with 21 story missions and over 300 side missions to finish.
