Spider-Man 3 to boost Blu-ray - Image 1With the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray and DVD launch coming on October 30, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is making strides with its promotional partners to generate the boost that the film and Blu-ray as a format needs.

Papa John's Pizza, Pringles Potato Crisps, Jolly Time Popcorn and Nutella are all pitching in in the collective effort.

According to Sony Pictures Senior VP for worldwide marketing Lexine Wong, Spider-Man 3 is the top-grossing movie event of 2007 and is therefore a very important asset for Sony.

"Besides having a higher profile because of its box-office clout, we have also expanded the media reach with the plethora of digital and nontraditional media opportunities that are available," she says.

Some 8.5 billion impressions are expected to be generated by Sony's campaign alone. Even more are expected to be drawn in with promotional coupons, rebates and sweepstakes on the part of Sony's partners.

The release of Spider-Man 3 is expected to sell very well on DVD, but more importantly for Sony, it should boost its next-generation Blu-ray format further ahead of rival HD-DVD.

Sony currently has a larger install base on next-generation players due to the release of its Sony PlayStation 3 game console which carries a Blu-ray drive with it.

FRYS.com has further lowered the price of their Lexar 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, knocking US$ 5 off the previous after-rebate price of US$ 39.99. Those of you looking for a new memory stick can get one now for US$ 34.99. Judging by the screenshot below, that's the actual price. No rebates needed this time. Then again, I never could understand the whole rebate thing.

Opinions are divided among PSP owners as to how reliable Lexar's memory sticks are. Now, I personally haven't used a Lexar before since I'm still using an old SanDisk, but if you need second opinions before you buy one, drop by our PSP forums and ask around.

Sandisk 1GB product ImageYep you read it right, Office Depot is now selling Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo for $29.99, no mail-in rebates, no coupons, nothing but a great price. You can go to the Office Depot Product Page (link below) and pick a couple out for you camera, PSP, or any other gadget you have that uses the format.

The Sandisk stick have been tested and have faster data transfer than a Sony branded one (which is great for any PSP owner transferring large movies). Now this is a great deal (I paid more than twice that about a month after the PSP came out) but you can also get a 4GB memory stick of questionable (read fake) quality on eBay for about $50-$60, although who knows how longs that it will last you. And if something goes wrong, they don't come with the Sandisk five-year warranty.

Motorola QFans of Motorola's hot new Q smartphone were eagerly awaiting the phone's arrival for months before it was finally released. Now that it's out and people are apparently falling all over each other to buy one, it seems that some companies are determined to fan the flames even further, so to speak. Amazon.com is offering Qs for Verizon for $319.99; with their Qs' activation, buyers get a whopper of a mail-in rebate - $150, which chops the net price to $169.99 and comes with free shipping to boot. (No, that's no typo!)

Such a sweet deal! If you want it, you have to act now, though, as in right now - the rebate ends June 14.
