Cartoons to video games Silverhawks - Image 1The 80s and the 90s can be considered as the golden era of cartoons. It's the time when the concept of mutant turtles were born, robots as tall as buildings were created, and talking bears with cute drawings on their chest was considered cool.

Entertainment media has spawned new avenues in modern Earth, but we're sure these old-school cartoons can still kick ass. So in this article, we look at old-school cartoons and wonder how great it would be to have them as a video game.

If you're a laptop-toting, Frappucino-sipping, free-spirited Mac user, tools and utilities that help you maximize your device will forever be a godsend. Despite Top 10 lists from every Tom, Dick, and Harry littering the internet, it's still always fun to learn more about what possible little apps you can feed your laptop-friend. Because quite frankly, sometimes being a well-versed Mac user doesn't necessarily mean you know everything.

This list, as compiled by Samuel Cohen in TheAppleBlog, includes applications from a wide spectrum of functionality. From efficient desktop managers to keyboard layout tweaks, from white-noise-inducing apps to handy pseudo-stickies that you can call on the fly - this list can prove to be useful for both Mac veterans and amateurs alike.

NoiseTake, for example, Noise. It's a free tiny app that simply produces white noise (or even pink noise) to drown out all the buzz in coffee shops and other public places where you might want to work. There's also the CornerClick app that allows you to add more functionality and "hot corners" right onto your trackpad. Even the mysterious-yet-powerful Quicksilver app launcher gets mention on the list.

With all these apps to download onto my laptop, I don't even know where to start! To check out the rest of the list, click the "Read" link below!

Last week's US releases was hooped up with two NBA games, and you're probably busy with the basket ever since you got the game. This coming week, however, take it out to the field with a FIFA game. FIFA Soccer 07 has Ronaldhino starring on the box, and the rest of the popular football players are kicking it off in this new soccer game.

There's also going to be some gambling going on, with a beefier version of Stacked. It's going to have some bonuses in this release, so you might want to check that out. If you want to rough it up, there's going to be some sidewalk smashing in Gangs of London. You can choose which gang you want to play: whether you want to control Jamaicans, Russians, Chinese, British, and Pakistanis, each of them have different skills to suit your personality as a gangster.

If you're not the sporty/active type, there's still a puzzler involving a ball of blubber (no, not Loco Roco) that you might want to try out. Mercury Meltdown involves you trying to navigate a very slippery ball of quicksilver around an obstacle course. All you need is a steady hand and some patience. This game isn't for the faint of heart...

It's a well-rounded line-up for this week, so pick your prize.
Mercury Meltdown squeezes into the week
Here's the list of PSP games coming out this week:

10/03/06 Gangs of London
10/03/06 Mercury Meltdown
10/03/06 FIFA Soccer 07

Quicksilver junkies would be very pleased with the new Cube interface created by Blacktree Software. To the uninitiated, Quicksilver is a free utility for Mac OS X that allows users to use the keyboard to rapidly launch applications, manipulate files, run scripts or send e-mail. It's packed with many features, some of which we don't normally use. But the beauty of Quicksilver's plug-in architecture is that you can choose not to install those you don't need. It's fairly easy to keep it lean.

The new interface design is arguably the most eye-catching UI plugin ever created for the application. It's not yet confirmed if the Cube interface is only available to the Quicksilver developer build versions, but nevertheless, you can still access the version from Quicksilver's Application preference tab.

Here's a clip of the Cube Interface in action. If you're new to the world of Quicksilver, you'd probably prefer stability over snazzy features, so you'd have to wait until the Quicksilver team brings out the "mainstream" version.

12-inch PowerBookThe Mac maybe handy - it could fit easily into your backpack, you can tag it along anywhere and all that. But sometimes you wish it has more screen resolution or that it has a bigger screen. Of course, there are just things that you can control and some that you can. So with that, let's focus on the things that you can control -- here are some free and simple ways to maximize your Mac's screen space.

The first thing you could do is lessen the size of your desktop icons. Many users love stuffing up their desktops with files, documents and other what-have-yous that gives the screen a small appearance.

To do this go to the Finder, choose “View” in the menu bar and select “Show View Options.” In the pop up, slide the icon size slider to 16 x 16. Next, set your “Label position” to “Right.” Finally, go to “View” and select the “Arrange By” option that you like.

Another thing you can do is take advantage of the Exposé feature of the Mac OS X. It allows a user to quickly see open windows by two different sets of criteria, or to hide all windows and show the desktop without the need to click through many windows to find a specific target.

Another tip is to hide the dock or if you can't work without it, position it to the right or left side of the screen. Using programs that support tabbed windows is also a good idea, and lastly you can use a free program called Quicksilver. If you aren't familiar with this one, it's a free utility that can be called from anywhere within the operating system to launch applications find files, search websites, scale images, and much more. With all these mentioned, it is almost an assured thing that screen space won't be an issue in your book anymore.
