It's been a while since we heard of anything from PSPoste, but it looks like the wait was well worth it. Now on Beta 7, this email client for the PSP has several new features and bug fixes. Among the notable changes is the use of extra RAM for the PSP Slim. More details after the link.

PSP homebrew developer zx-81 dropped by the QJ.Net Forums to tell us all about his latest update for PSPoste, an email client originally made by David Cummings, Ben Biron, and Sajeeth Cherian. PSPoste: Email Client for PSP Beta 6.2 has added keyboard support for a more convenient PSP email experience.

Like the last update, zx-81 made both FW 1.50 and FW 3.xx versions available. In this release, PSPoste has been linked with the latest IR keyboard library that PSPIRC also uses. More IR keyboards, which the developer previously credited to Harald Fielker, are now supported.

If you've been itching to use your Palm IR keyboard, and is not running on CFW 3.71-2 which has been reported to be incompatible with PSPoste, then grab the version that suits you from the links below. The homebrew dev has also made the source code available below for those interested.

s3ven has released O2P Importer v0.2.1, otherwise known as the Outlook to PSPoste Contacts Importer. s3ven's application is a program that PSPoste and Outlook users can use to transfer contacts, emails, phone numbers, and addresses from Outlook to the PSPoste email client through the creation of a new CONTACTS.XML file.

Here are the full features of the program:

• Import your contacts emails, phones and address from Outlook to PSPoste.
• Update an existing contacts file. (Replace all existing contacts informations with the values in Outlook, you can choose or not to overwrite a contact)
• Select severals contacts folder.
• Include the contacts that don't have an email address.
• Preview the generated XML code

According to s3ven's write-up of the app, O2P Importer v0.2.1 should be compatible with Outlook 2000, 2002/XP, 2003, and 2007. Just remember to save a copy of your original contacts file before attempting to use the application and follow the prompts from the wizard to move your contacts around. Enjoy!

The PSPoste email client application by homebrew trio David Cummings, Ben Biron and Sajeeth Cherian has just received a new update, courtesy of fellow developer Zx-81.

The author just dropped by the QJ.NET earlier to let the community know that PSPoste Beta 6.1 now carries full IR keyboard support, being successfully tested on a Targus Universal IR Wireless keyboard. Zx-81 credits the original PSP IR Keyboard Library to Harald Fielker.

Guys interested in trying out this updated homebrew are advised to check out the the file bundle's readme (README-IRKBD.TXT), or Zx-81's homebrew thread here at the QJ.NET Forums for further details. There are three files available for download: PSPoste for FW 1.5, for custom fw 3.xx, and PSPoste's source code.

Ben has just informed us that he and Dave have updated their homebrew app PSPoste, which functions as an email client for the PSP.

Users are already making full use of the TrueType font support and Gmail in the app. And with the previously released version ushering in tons of fixes, you can only expect PSPoste to continue being updated to run smoothly as ever. That said, here's the full list of stuff you can expect from Beta 6...

Changelog:

• Support for 2.x+ firmwares, that means WPA connections will now work. Note that only the "Automatic" (DHCP) connections work with the 2.x version. Tested on 3.03 OE-A.
• This means there are 2 versions to choose from when downloading: FW15 and FW2x. If you must have a manually configured connection, use FW15 (that means no WPA). If you're experiencing crashes on FW2x, try to reproduce them with FW15 version since it's able to produce more debug info (crash.log).
• Analog stick navigation now disabled by default. Can be enabled from the Input tab in the Settings window.
• Fixed a bug in the network connection detection that meant the app wouldn't start because it incorrectly thought no network connections were present.
• A crash.log is now created when the FW15 version crashes with a blue screen. If reporting crashes when running the FW15 version, please attach the crash.log file.
  

Install/Upgrade notes:

• FW15: Unzip PSPoste_Beta6_FW15.zip into your PSP/GAME (PSP/GAME150 for OE users) directory. Existing settings, contacts and mail will be preserved.
• FW2x: Unzip PSPoste_Beta6_FW2x.zip into your PSP/GAME303.
• Upgrading from FW15 to FW2x: Rename your existing __SCE__PSPoste to PSPoste, move it to PSP/GAME303, then unzip PSPoste_Beta6_FW2x.zip into PSP/GAME303. You can delete %__SCE__PSPoste.

You gotta give snaps to people who never quit improving their work. And by people, we mean Ben and Dave, makers of this uber cool email client for the PSP called PSPoste.

If you guys were able to catch PSPoste Beta 1, you'll see that this nifty app has indeed gone a long way. After fixing some issues and cleverly updating the homebrew app to include Gmail and Yahoo support, they're now back to bring us another bumped up version.

So, curious as to what nifty new things have been added in Beta 4? I'll give you guys a clue: why sizzle, when you can swizzle? Hahaha. Never mind, just check out the changelog.

Changelog:

• Interface and email text now rendered with TrueType Fonts. Thanks to FreeType and the Bookr project for the code.
• Skin and font textures are now swizzled.
• Rendered fonts and skin pngs are now cached in their swizzled state. That means rendering of the .ttf and .png files will only happen the first time the app is launched, subsequent launches/quits will be much quicker.
• We no longer ship with "default" settings and contacts xml files. They will be automatically generated at runtime if they don't exist. This means users no longer need to backup their settings.xml and contacts.xml files when upgrading.
• Fix a crash and some rendering bugs in CText.

It's been a while since we last heard from them, but upon checking our mailbox, we were happy to find that Ben and Dave have been pretty busy with the latest version of their project, PSPoste. Now at Beta3, they have made significant additions, with a lot of those new features being user requests that have now been granted (ain't they nice?).

Some of the changes that they have made for this version include:

• Support for TLS/SSL: This includes support for mail services like GMail and Yahoo.
• SMTP Authentication: Supports SMTP servers that require authentication (with or without TLS/SSL)
• Support for the Danzeff Keyboard and an analog version of the GUI keyboard
• Account templates: allows for quick addition of predefined accounts. Supported accounts are currently GMail, Yahoo.com and Yahoo.ca (bring up the context menu in the accounts tab of the settings page - triangle).
• Easier account switching (bring up the context menu from the main window - triangle).
• Completely revamped account settings page.
• Support for account renaming.
• Password control that masks the input.
• Detailed error messages (error shows up in dialog instead of telling the user to open err.log).
• Currently active account now displayed in the main window.
• New checkbox and group box control.
• Auto update from old settings file format.
• HUHelp button moved from analog left to start button.
• Bugfixes in the context menu, CText, tabbed window, contacts edit window, input dialog.

INSTALL NOTES: Unzip the PSPoste_Beta3_FW15.zip file to your PSP/GAME directory.

UPGRADE NOTES: Make a backup of the existing PSP/GAME/__SCE__PSPoste/Data/SETTINGS.XML file, unzip the PSPoste_Beta3_FW15.zip file to your PSP/GAME directory, replace PSP/GAME/__SCE__PSPoste/Data/SETTINGS.XML with the file just backed up. If you renamed the __SCE__PSPoste directory and want to keep your email, just copy over the __SCE__PSPoste/store directory.

Please note that this application will run on 1.5 firmware. We would advise that you do not try to install this on higher firmware versions, as we're not sure if that would work and what the effects would be if you did. At the moment, we can't find any mention about the matter over at the PSPoste site, so just to be safe, stick with 1.5, okay?

In the meantime, just go ahead and download this nifty app from the PSPoste site and make yourself happy.

PSPoste makes us all giddy inside, what with all the emailing goodness. You guys seemed to really like this email client as much as we did, if jumps are concerned, but if you noticed some issues with their first beta, then you're in luck. The fellows at PSPoste informed us about some problems they felt needed some tweaking, and so they've come up with PSPoste Beta2.

The issue that got their attention was a mail duplication error that popped up every so often. If you're one of those folks who plan to make this one of their bread-and-butter programs for their PSP, then you know how annoying errors of the sort would probably be, what with all that added work to clean up your client. PSPoste Beta2 has opted to fix this, as well as tweak some other things for users. Here's the list of problems they fixed:

• Fixed the uids file not being read/written (mail duplication issue).
• Got rid of the "Bentest" icon on the main window.
• Fixed the hang when the app was exited through the home button during an assert comment. Although whenever such a message is encountered, it's best to hit triangle to get out of it.
• Fixed the crash on startup caused by an empty "reply to" field (any empty fields should no longer cause a crash now).
• Fixed an issue where the context menu wasn't being brought up in the address dialog.

They're also planning on integrating other input methods for their client, but since that might take a while, expect a little more time between Beta2 and their next release unless another annoying problem comes up.

E-mail on the go is something that we all crave. It's like text messaging for free, and until now, there hasn't really been an e-mail client for the PSP that had complete features. We say "until now" because the PSPoste development team has just announced the release of PSPoste Beta1 - a fully functional e-mail client for the PSP with both POP3 and SMTP mail protocol support. The feature list of this client is really long, and once you finish reading it you'll wonder why it took so long for such a client to come to the PSP, and you'll realize that this is just what you've been missing out on.

PSPoste Beta1 supports the POP3 and SMTP mail protocols as well as allowing the composing, retrieving, storing and viewing of emails from multiple servers. Users can choose from 3 supported input methods; graphical overlay keyboard, p-sprint or ThinkOutside IrDa keyboard; whichever method you prefer to use to make your e-mail experience much better. PSPoste doesn't currently support deleting mail from the server, so any e-mail you do receive wouldn't be permanently lost, although this is not a guarantee either.

The only thing which could cause you a bit of trouble is that PSPoste uses the memory stick to store email, so any crash, loss of power or removal of the memory stick while PSPoste is running could cause corruption and data loss of any data on the memory stick. So be careful. If you can, use a spare memory stick to load this application. This is a beta, so you can expect there to be a few bugs that the PSPoste development team will still have to spray with their very own coding can of Raid.
