Transformers - Image 1Outspoken movie director Michael Bay, who is behind the blockbuster movie Transformers, recently related his theory that Microsoft wants both the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats to fail, saying the war is just a diversion to create confusion. Now he adds in his site that he doesn't care about the war at all (since he can play both formats in his screening room anyway) but that the Blu-ray format suits his films better. This comment also got a reply from Amir, a "retired HD DVD insider." Read more in the full article.

Relax with Takara Tomy's UMINE projector - Image 1If you want to take a vacation but can't find the time to do so, Takara Tomy's UMINE projector might just be the next best thing. This device projects various calming images such as trees, seascapes, and beaches unto a ceiling or a wall.

To further add to the ambiance, you can hook it up to an external sound source to play some of your favorite tunes, ambient water sounds, or even crickets chirping. The device is housed in a housing similar to a crystal ball and would make a very nice conversation piece the next time you have some friends over.

While it is a bit pricey at US$ 84, the benefits that one might gain from having this product at home are countless. At the very least, it might help set the right mood when you've got a lady friend over for some drinks.

Considered the direct descendant of the first gaming platforms, the "world's most powerful console" has had advocates who've considered the fact that the PC can be anything it wanted to be, even a console. While many have been quick to say that the PC is dead, others have been busy proving that it hasn't even come close to that state.

The Gamix Console concept - sleek, shiny and ALL PC - Image 1For Gamix founder Eli Tomlinson, it has been a life's effort to turn a basic PC into a fully fledged console machine. Tomlinson uses his programming know-how and a slew of code from GPL games to create optimized, dedicated versions of games into commercial grade console games, each for US$ 19.99. Yes, we know that GPL should be free, but the optimizations are throughout the code. In fact, the original creators of the code are ironically cheering him on.

So Tomlinson packaged his games under the Gamix brand, and designed them for a customized 1.8 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM, DVD-equipped box, dotted-with four USB ports. Sounds a lot like some other gaming consoles, although not exactly next-gen based yet. Thinking about a DX10 8800GTX, X6800 monster all stacked on an ITX puppy has us all drooling... (Uh oh...modding idea!)

While each game has to come with its own operating system, each copy will have optimized drivers and only the necessary tools to play the game right off the CD. Unfortunately, like most consoles, this PC console will be plagued by the same scratched CD problems. The PC is one such platform that can allow you to install a game and keep the CD stashed safe from dust and dangers of constant use. It's not piracy; it's being investment conscious.

Coupled with the fact that the PC could also use the Wiimote, go next-gen and plug into a TV, LCD monitor or even an LCD projector (oh bother, methinks someone wet himself) at the same time, this is a tasty treat indeed.

CES 2007

Uh-oh. It looks like those metal-scavenging Jawas have finally gotten their grubby paws on R2D2 and have turned him into... well, an iPod dock. As spotted at the CES 2007 floor, this little droid won't exactly pilot your X-Wing for you anymore, but it CAN play your tunes and project your movies.

R2D2?? What have those Jawas done to you??At the Nikko Home Electronics corner, the R2-D2 DVD Projector was spotted being sold for more than US$ 2,000. You can pop in your favorite DVD movie in the slot and project the show onto your wall. If you're tired of that, R2D2 can also play your CDs or hook up to your iPod.

This guy's true purpose is to play DVDs though, and can display an image on the wall at up to 80 inches wide, or he can tilt up so he can project onto the ceiling, just so you can lie back while you watch the latest season of "House MD".

As for the remote, the remote control slides out of a replica of the Millennium Falcon. Besides controlling the projector though, this remote can also move R2D2 himself, making him go forward, reverse, right, left, and do pivot turns as he makes his signature bleeps and boops (I have to admit, that is so darned cute...).

Now if only he came with his mini-zapper and his rocket boosters, it would be perfect.
