Thanks in large part to Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Sony is licking some serious PlayStation 3 sales chops. However, the overall leadership remains with Kyoto-based Nintendo as their twin juggernauts Wii and DS posted huge stats again. The official reactions of both companies after the jump.

Pioneer Corporation has successfully developed the world's first 16-layer optical disc. This disc can hold up to 400 gigabytes of data with a per layer capacity of 25 GB (around the size of a Blu-Ray Disc). Want to know how they did it? Then head on over to the full article.

Asking PC vendors what they think is superior between Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD won't get you anywhere, because even they aren't sure which to adopt. There are already five different types of blue-laser optical drives for these in the market, but even those don't help international PC vendors decide which one should be standard for PCs.

If you're a fan of cute shooters, you'd better read this because we spotted the sub-genre's grand-daddy on the ESRB site and it's heading right over to the Nintendo Wii for a Virtual Console cameo. Yup, it's Super Air Zonk and it's set to flog for 800 Wii Points, but that's okay because you'll be getting tons of fun in return.

Originally released for the PC and the TurboGrafx in 1992, Super Air Zonk was a side-scrolling shoot-em up with quirky protagonists, hot action and some cool power-ups. Hordes of enemies stand in your way, but with a trusty trigger button and some dexterity, you'll find yourself in a simple but addictive little world.

Okay, so the graphics are as ancient as they come, but don't let that fool you. What we have here is a true-blue pioneer that was among the best of its day and set the benchmark where others followed. If you're all for raw, unadulterated fun, watch out for Super Air Zonk and watch the 8-bit sparks fly.

Pioneer and Mitsubishi have just developed the revolutionary disk LTH (Low to High) BD-R. This uses an organic dye recording layer which should theoretically be compatible with the Blu-ray Disc Recordable format 1.2.

We say theoretically because current Blu-ray drives don't support this yet. However, this could easily be solved by a firmware update to the players. The project was started by both companies back in 1994.

The goal then was to standardize the method of producing writable BD-R disks. The main advantage of this new product, accordingly, is the relative low-cost in making the disks.

Aside from that, migrating to this new technology is rather easy for companies as the manufacturers have the ability to simply upgrade their CD-R and CD-RW producing machines to produce these disks. It was said that these cheap LTR BD-R disks will hit the market as soon as the first BD-R drives start being sold in the market.

Pioneer will be rolling out a new GPS known as the AVIC-X3 in September. Too bad this new gadget seems to be only for France, since it's looking pretty sweet indeed.

For navigation, the AVIC-X3 makes use of multi-sensor technology to keep the GPS going even when you take the subway. It also boasts of a fast boot and a TMC receiver. It also comes pre-loaded with over 1.5 million points of interest spread over 26 European countries.

Navigation's not the only thing the AVIC-X3 can do, too. It also has a built-in DVD player, iPod support and a 7-inch touchscreen. Gamers can also plug in their video game consoles into this baby if they have the needed cables, which unfortunately don't ship with the AVIC-X3.
