Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has just revealed their plans of a new TV advertising campaign for their PSP handheld platform. Who's the endorser, you ask? It's none other than NFL All-Pro athlete Michael Strahan of the New York Giants.

The football star will be the image model for the new PSP campaign that will extend the "Dude, Get Your Own" line of commercials. In fact, Strahan will be appearing side by side with the PSP's "Annoying Guy" made popular in the existing ads. Hmm... A tall tower of muscle faced against a skinny PSP fanboy. Accident waiting to happen, much?

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Marketing Senior Vice President Peter Dille himself made a post on the PlayStation Blog to announce the largest ever advertising campaign for a hardware platform, all to support the Sony PlayStation 3 and the release of its US$ 399 40GB model. As a start, Sony is dishing out TV ads that showcase the PS3's features.

"We wanted to move beyond the 'power' message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3," said Dille. He continued, "the games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear." Of course, it's not all about the games, because Dille promised a strong push behind the PS3's Blu-ray movie capability and the PlayStation Network.

Speaking of games, the TV spots Dille posted are packed with the hottest high-profile titles for the PS3. While the spotlight is on first-party games, either those already in the market like Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction or upcoming ones such as Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, third-party titles are expected to join the mix. Dille went as far as saying Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the "mother of all exclusives."

With Sony Computer Entertainment's SingStar for the PlayStation 3 being prepared for a December launch in Europe, we imagine the gamers over in North America are wondering when they'll get a chance at the spotlight (and mic). According to Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) Peter Dille, the company had yet to confirm an exact release for SingStar's U.S. release.

Dille further noted that the game would be coming out next year, shortly after the game's Europe debut. As to the reasons for the delay, Dille explained that it was not due to hardware problems, but rather, SingStar was getting delayed due to licensing problems. As Dille told 1up during an interview:

Yeah, it's not a technology issue at all. It'll be a disc-based product and that'll be a great experience in and of itself, but obviously we're equally if not more excited to deliver content via the PlayStation Network and have consumers experience new songs that way. We want to make sure we get it right and consumers get that full experience. I don't think we'll be talking about a huge delay, but it's something we had to push back a little bit.

After playing guessing games with video game consumers, Sony Computer Entertainment America finally confirmed that the 40GB PlayStation 3 model will be made available in the region as well. It will ship on November 2 and will cost US$ 399.99. Aside from losing some features, the said SKU will also sport no backwards compatibility.

In a recent interview, SCEA Senior VP for Marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille said that they planned all along that the 40GB PS3 model will come to the States close to the price reduction schedule of the 80GB PS3 models to give consumers more choices.

The said PS3 price reduction involves a US$ 100 price cut. When pressed about the issue of backwards compatibility, Dille answered:

Again, we know from our research that backwards compatibility is more important to some people than others. In practice, once you get the PS3 home, the ability to play games in high-definition is more what they are interested in than their back catalog of PS2 games.

The backwards compatibility feature has been disabled by removing the graphics synthesizer chip in the PS3 that in turn, made it possible to lower the units' cost. Another option that Sony could have taken is the elimination of the PS3's WiFi feature. Peter Dille shared some light on why they didn't choose to take this path:

We'll be rolling out more and more features that take advantage of the connectivity between the PSP and the PS3, and Wi-Fi is really essential to that experience. We've got some cool things you can do today with Wi-Fi, but there are also a lot more on the horizon that will help people understand why we left Wi-Fi in.

Gaming Target recently did a survey of the exclusive downloadable games on both the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade to see which one has a larger collection of exclusives. The survey was conducted in response to a comment made by SCEA Head of Marketing Peter Dille.

Dille, who voiced some pretty strong opinions about the Xbox 360 during E3, also said (in the same interview with Gamasutra):

Whereas our competition takes a bunch of old content and catalogs content from previous generations and offers that in a download fashion, our development organization are making games specifically for PS3.

Because of the remark and requests from readers, Gaming Target did the exclusive games survey of the two networks. They excluded the Wii because the games they offer aren't technically exclusive since they were released on other consoles before.

They found out that XBLA offers almost three times that of the PlayStation Network, including still unreleased games on both networks. Not only did they find that XBLA has more offerings in games, but they found that almost half of the available games have a Metascore (average score from critics) of 75 or over, while the PSN only has three out of their eleven release games that achieved that rank.
