Prosthetics for the physically challenged have been getting a dose of added technology. Recently, a prosthetic leg or arm isn't just that anymore-- most of them are now also sporting computer technology and sensors that would make the lives of the disabled more comfortable. Some of the prosthetics that already relies on computer technology is the Rheo Knee. Within a few steps, this helpful device could calculate the user's walking speed, judge the terrain, and start dealing with potential terrain problems. Aside from that, the Rheo Knee is lightweight (3.6 pounds), and has a long battery life which is perfect for patients that yearn for the active lifestyle amidts their condition. The Ossur product known as the Power Knee won't be left behind. This one uses a a sensor placed on an amputee's natural leg that allows it to make speed and terrain calculations in half a step. The sensor communicates with the prosthetic via wireless Bluetooth technology. Ossur says its products produce roughly 70 percent to 85 percent of the functionality of a normal limb. This development is good and all, but it also comes with a stiff price tag. The Rheo Knee sports a price tag that will vary from $35,000-$40,000, while the Power Knee comes in a stiffer price - $100,000. The ordinary mechanical leg (one with minimal or no compter technology present) will cost up to $25,000. Walking the way you use to or the way majority of the population do, still comes with a heavy price. Other prosthetics that are donning high-tech features are the Cheetah-Flex Foot (left thumbprint), Ossur GII 3DX ligament brace, and the C-leg limb devices. Most, if not, all comes with a hefty price tag. |
