Now that we all know what Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki thinks of Tekken, here comes another news tidbit that tells us what he thinks of another noteworthy video game: Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword. Itagaki-san offers a few choice words about the epic game:
I've never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you're supposed to press onscreen... I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it's asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it. While it's not as succinct as his "Tekken sucks" quote, it delivers quite the same blow. Ninja Theory's Kyle Shubel, however, has a few words of his own to shove at Itagaki's way: My response to Mr. Itagaki would be that the intent of the Hero sequences is to empower the player to experience events that would be nearly impossible to play in a natural platforming state... for example, making the player run down ropes, leaping from rope to rope as they're being cut from underneath you, all while dodging other objects — that would be a frustrating experience to 99 percent of our users if we were to force them to do that manually. With most gaming developers and producers giving bland regards and salutations to each other, it certainly is refreshing to find them turning to Hollywood from time to time to liven up the gaming news. Maybe we'll get to see some of them in future Jerry Springer shows. |

EGM has some screens of the much-anticipated Sony PlayStation 3 action game Heavenly Sword. The June issue is due out on May 8th but someone apparently got a hold of the copy and scanned the images. Thanks to him, we all can see these lovely scans. Check them out:
New details have also been revealed about how Nuriko will dazzle and decapitate enemies. When your style points go up, deadly moves are unlocked to splatter blood and guts all over town. Kratos better get himself ready. He don't want no bimbo stealing his thunder, would he? The SIXAXIS will be put to a good test here, too. Projectiles can be fired casually or can be guided with the controller. "If you pick up a shield, you can throw it, and if you hold down the button, you’ll go into this flying camera with the shield and maneuver it while it’s in midair. Same goes with shooting the crossbow," says SCEA Producer Kyle Shubel. Way to cross Captain America with Max Payne. More than the combat, the developers are trumpeting the graphics that the game will introduce. "We’ve got a level of grace and fluidity in our combat. You move in like a dance-like state where you’re doing a lot of complex maneuvers, and the more crazy stuff you execute, the more style points you accumulate." Whoa! It's not too late to shoe-in Shakira as an unlockable character, right? |

QJ reader justin alerts us to an interview with Heavenly Sword producer Ninja Theory and Heavenly Sword producer">Kyle Shubel over at PlayStation Universe. But before we delve into several game-related details from the producer, lets cover something that a lot of folks are curious about. Yes, Ninja Theory's Kyle Shubel confirms that there will be a demo for the game, and that it will be released before the retail version gets shipped. As for details like when and what regions it will be available for download, Shubel asks that we wait for now. On to the details. Shubel notes that a majority of the enemies in the game will be humans, but they do have a few surprises for us. As for the environments in game, aside from the ones we've seen already, there will be snowy hills, riverbeds, barren desserts, and a castle city surrounded by waterfalls. Shubel is a bit shy to give actual hours in terms of game length, but he notes that depending on the player's interest combined with the likelyhood that there will be a decent set of bonus features and unlockables, that the game should have decent replay value. For those of you who feel that graphics matter, the game runs at 720p, on 30 frames-per-second. As for online features, tough luck; Shubel notes that this will be strictly a single player experience. However, he does say that they are in discussion to support PlayStation Home with Heavenly Sword content. Producer Kyle Shubel notes that the game should be released come Fall '07. |
