Doom - Image 1A small but highly-important update comes our way from Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew developer kgsws, and it's about his three-hit combo of old school FPS action, PSP Hexen, PSP Doom, and PSP Heretic. We say small because there's not much that's changed with any of the games from the last update, except for one thing: they now work on 3.xx firmware.

PSP Doom from kgsws - Image 1We've got a triple treat for you FPS fans out there - three updates from homebrew developer kgsws. PSP Hexen, PSP Heretic, and PSP Doom all get bumped up and multiplayer for all three were pimped.

Notes from the homebrew dev's release says that all three games work fully for three players, and he hopes that the statistics are the same for four players. Also, PSP Heretic and Doom both get options for choosing what color you want for your player. Check out the changelogs:

PSP Heretic version 0.8
  • multiplayer update
PSP Doom version 0.7
  • fixed multiplayer code
  • fixed chainsaw animation
  • change at exit
PSP Hexen version 0.4
  • datadisc support
  • fixed multiplayer (for 8 players)
We'd still advise you to check out the rest of the readme files though, since important information like installation, controls, and other stuff are in there. Anyway, check out the downloads below. Enjoy!

PSP Doom and PSP Heretic from kgsws - Image 1PSP Doom and PSP Heretic from kgsws - Image 2

We're not certain if you've heard about this one already before but a couple of the many projects of homebrew developer kgsws are PSP Doom and PSP Heretic. It's needless to say that these are PlayStation Portable adaptations of the FPS classics Doom and Heretic.

Currently, PSP Doom is at version 0.6 while PSP Heretic is at v0.7. kgsws mentioned , and we agree, that the best feature this has to offer is the multiplayer ad hoc for two players. The coder also added a four player support but that hasn't been tested as of yet. The following changes have occurred since the last versions.

PSP Doom v 0.6 and PSP Heretic v0.7:
  • Sound Volume: its value is controlled by distance of its source.
  • Puff Bug (engine bug): puff does not appear when projectile (bullet, not rocket etc) hits two-sided wall under sky.
  • Weapon selecting: old weapons selecting was making multiplayer out of sync (and heretic does not have any switcher)
  • Sky colormap (engine bug?): when in GOD mode (no cheat) everything except sky was in different color
PSP Heretic v0.7:
  • Added weapon switching
  • Fixed sound bug of imp (that red fling monster)
  • Added cheat menu in singleplayer
  • Added CPU settings in options

Homebrew New Recovery from developer kgsws - Image 1Homebrew New Recovery from developer kgsws - Image 2

There's a new recovery homebrew application that is called, well, New Recovery. It was created by coder kgsws, and QJ.Net Forum member myschoo was good enough to share it with everyone else. One good thing about this is that if you prefer the original recovery menu, you don't actually need to flash this as you can just put it in as an EBOOT.

The program itself, not the EBOOT one take note, contains the "recovery.prx" file as well as various language files such as English, Slovak, and build-in Czech. Other features include Theme Settings and on/off toggle for the XMB background. And did we mention that New Recovery can display 15 PRX modules? We didn't? Well it does (5 XMB, 5 GAME, 5 POPS).

New Recovery, like most homebrew applications, comes in with a Readme file so be sure to browse through that first. It tells how you can tinker with your PlayStation Portable's (PSP) old "recovery.prx" and even replacing its language. If you're really that nifty, you can even change the color of your original recovery menu.

Thanks ikrnboi2xi for the heads up!

PSP homebrew! - Image 1

Building on caliFrag's original translation of kgsws' Custom xmbIcon Packager, Aythamie has released another fixed version of the homebrew app over on the QJ forums. What Aythamie did this time was fix some of the firmware 3.0x icons and names. Here's a list of the changes in v0.3.1:
  • Fixed German names for new icons.
  • Fixed Spanish names for new icons.
  • Fixed French names for new icons.
  • Fixed Italian names for new icons.
  • Fixed Portuguese names for new icons.
The Custom xmbIcon Packager allows users to convert icons to PSP format for use with the topmenu_plugin.rco. If you're not sure how to do change your XMB icons, check out this great guide by Anubis on the QJ forums. For some ready-made icons, click here.

Please see the attached readme file for instructions on installing this app. Remember to read the instructions carefully before you install in order to minimize chances of you bricking your PSP.

xmbPackager by kgsws - Image 1

PSP homebrew developer, Aythamie, has recently released an update to the nifty application coded by kgsws, xmbPackager. He mentions that he doesn't take any credit for the making or the translation of this program, he just lend a helping hand on this one. Anyhow, what he did is fixed some of the Icons and Names. Here's the changelog to fill you in on what's new with this app, this time around:

Changes for  v0.3: (by Aythamie)
  • Fixed the fw 3.03 icons: RSS Channel Settings, Camera, Certificate Utility, Remote Play and Online Instruction Manuals.
  • Fixed the English names for the new icons.
  • Fixed the Dutch names for the new Icons.
  • Added some more Icon Sets. (30 Icon sets totally now)
Now, if you're not familiar with this one, fret not, we'll refresh your memory. This app was actually made by developer, kgsws and was first featured here a few weeks ago. From the name of the app alone, you will know that the application allows you to change icons on our PSP's XMB. Now that the trip down memory lane is over, we suggest you read the readme file, translated by CaliFrag,  that comes with the download below.

Thanks to PuNiSHErA for the tip!

x-flash V18k

Remember waaaay back in September we brought you guys Art's oh-so-cool PSP homebrew app X-Flash V15g and said that it could possibly be his last release? Well thank God it wasn't, because the number of PSP users downloading his app just keeps getting bigger, and they'll be glad to know that he just rolled out X-Flash V18k which allows you to write custom icons.

Here's what Art had to say about that:

Functionality to write custom icons from source topmenu_plugin.rco file in Modified folder to the same file in flash0. The source file must be the correct file as output by the icon program by kgsws. It must also be the correct version. Original icons can still be relaced by pressing Circle. This was done so writing new custom icons need not affect changed menu labels and other mods.

If this is your first time to encounter this app, you might wanna check out our previous posts on X-Flash. Also, you should know that this app writes on to Flash and CAN brick your PSP if you're not careful. So PLEASE check out the FAQ file included in the zip. Art also says that he's just started a job that requires long hours so he hasn't been able to update X-Flash that much. But the good news is, there will be even more future releases so make sure you check back with us if you don't wanna miss those.
