skypeNow, Skype (yes, we're talking about the peer-to-peer Internet telephony network) has breached the mobile phone industry as well by joining hands with iSkoot (a company that developed the mobile phone software that enables people to make and receive Skype phone calls).

This partnership may lead to pre-loading of the software to new mobile phones and cellular service providers, enabling users to make and receive Skype calls in their cellular phones. However, users will be charged for every call they make. So much for free calls. Another downside is that the iSkoot currently supports US cellular networks only.

The software has been available for quite some time already, minus the Skype certification. The "Skype-certified" version is not yet released, but can be downloaded from the net once it's available.

Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson mobile phones that run J2ME are compatible with the iSkoot software. The company says it intends to add support for other J2ME phones including Treo and BlackBerry. Sounds like a really good development especially for us mobile phone users, right?
