Gunnar Hero v0.20 - Image 1Gunnar Hero v0.20 - Image 2

The first time we heard about the rhythm-based homebrew game Gunnar Hero was around March of this year. It was created by HardHat and the inspiration came from, needless to say, the highly successful title Guitar Hero. We learned today that the developer joined forces with Team Sushi and came up with a new build for the Neo Spring Coding Competition 07.

Team Sushi noted that compared to the previous versions, this is one's the most stable and with a lot of additions such as keyboard re-mapping, high scores, points multipliers, and support for multiple plays per sessions. The complete changelog for this version is as follows:
  • Nicer text for list of songs (based on the filename instead of the XML)
  • Transparent menu background
  • Targa-based vid capturing
  • High scores are now saved, so beat your high score
  • Multipliers are based on whether there are active notes or active sparks.  If not, the multiplier is reset to 1.
  • Replay now reset properly, so score is not cumulative
  • Nicer sustain bars (but still no points for sustains)
  • Added intro keymap instructions
Team Sushi has some important reminders included in the Readme file like installation guide, changelogs for previous builds, and more importantly, a How To for getting songs that you will use with Gunnar Hero v0.20.

Last Call v0.31 - Image 1

PSP homebrew maker hardhat has released v0.31 of his team's lovely booze-oriented game Last Call. Previously previewed by us, the game is a top-down 2D game that has the player taking the role of Les, a drunk man who simply wants to get out of the office and get home to nurse his impending hangover.

To get through the game, you have to find the key that unlocks each level while remaining drunk. Yes folks, the game wants you to stay drunk. You lose the game when you go sober, as the losing situation, otherwise known as Les' sobriety, is described as "the depressing realization that you must be an alcoholic." Funny how to the game wants you to keep getting drunk to avoid realizing you're an alcoholic, but we digress.

As always, make sure you check the readme for information on how to play the game. Don't forget to leave comments on the forum, and remember that this game is a contest entry for GBAX 2007. If you like it, go and vote for it! Enjoy!

Developer hardhat passed by our Forums yesterday to alert us that he's got a preview out for an upcoming release of build 21 of his PSP top down 2D game, Last Call.

As mentioned, the game is a top down 2D game that features 6 playable levels, a full level editor, 3 types of collectibles, over 50 NPCs that interact with you (and even insult you if they feel like it), a sound track, and particle effects when items are gathered.

What's the game about? Well, it's a about a guy named Les who got "ambushed" by his co-workers after his recent promotion. After having one too many drinks, Les now has to go home, and you, the player sorta have to help him. This of course, is when the fun in the game begins. Watch the video at the bottom to have a better idea.

The game was programmed by hardhat and a_nub. The sounds in the game were from WernerVonBraun, meanrabbit.com, and the music was from mono211.com/modsoulbrother/. The game's Graphics was by birdman2078, hardhat, a_nub, Meyitzo, and Zion.

Nice work guys!

Gunnar Hero Spongebob mod - Image 1Gunnar Hero Spongebob mod - Image 2

Any fans of Spongebob here? Yeah, that yellow, squarepants-wearing sponge that borders on being annoying at times? Regardless of anyone's view on that Nickelodeon character, though, we're pretty sure that you will begin liking her him after we told you that rubixcube6 has just incorporated Spongebob into the amazing homebrew game Gunnar Hero.

In case you are not familiar with Gunnar Hero, it was developed by homebrew developer HardHat, and the game itself was inspired by the video game Guitar Hero. The original game is currently in v0.13 and one known mod for it is the Light Punk mod, which features Batman and Ozzy Osbourne.

Anyway, as we've mentioned, Gunnar Hero Spongebob mod v0.1 is a mod that involves, well, Spongebob Squarepants. It was developed by coder rubixcube6 and according to this dev, Spongebob here plays the guitar. On the other hand, Squidward and Patrick play the piano and drums respectively. Aside from these characters, the over all texture of Gunnar Hero has also been changed.

Care to give your shoutouts to the developer? Anyway, nice work rubixcube6! Keep it up!

Thanks to Uhn for the tip!

Gunnar Hero was inspired by video game Guitar Hero - Image 1

Amazing homebrew game Gunnar Hero just got updated and is currently in version 0.13. It was created by homebrew developer HardHat and inspirations for this one mostly came from video game Guitar Hero. Now, if you're still not sure what the heck we are talking about, maybe you can watch the teaser video for the homebrew game that we posted a while ago.

With that out of the way, Gunnar Hero version 0.13 comes in with a lot of changes that are sure to make you rock out to your heart's delight. Among the many improvements, probably the most important one is that Gunnar Hero doesn't crash anymore when starting the previously posted song packs. HardHat mentioned that while the bug is not fully fixed, Gunnar Hero just exits at the end of some songs in some instances instead of crashing totally.

The graphics of Gunnar Hero has also been improved. You can see in this version that the stage, as well as the speakers, are more polished than the previous release. Cameras, likewise, received upgrades as well. As if these changes are not enough, hardhat promised that future releases will include the following:
  • Fire effect on correct buttons
  • Nicer rendered buttons
  • Support sustain notes
  • Easy, Medium and Expert levels added to the existing Hard level
  • Less crashing
  • High scores and Internet high scores
  • Selectable skins
  • More tolerance of misnamed files
  • Much polishing
  • Modder's guide
