If you've got ample technical skills, and nary the patience to wait for the upcoming Wii Balance Board, we've got something for you. Mike Sylvester over at NintendoWiiFanboy has announced that he's finished working on a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) version of Nintendo's official product, and has successfully tested it on at least one Windows-based game.
Mike's version of the board was built from around US$ 20 worth of hardware store materials, and uses the GlovePIE script to enable him to use it on Windows-based games. Here's a video demonstrating Mike's early tests using the snowboarding game Stoked Rider (Windows, Linux, and Mac OS ): As you guys probably noticed, this kit is not planted on the ground like Nintendo's rig - Mike explains that it balances on a shaved (yes, shaved) tennis ball. The board will require the user to balance while playing, ensuring that guys who were hoping to literally sit this one out will still be giving their bum a workout. |

It's been a while since we had any news about Frets of Fire, the Guitar Hero clone for Mac OS X. Early this year, we posted a GlovePie script that let Wii owners (or Wiimote owners, at least) use their Wiimotes with the game. Today, we came across a post at The Unofficial Apple Weblog announcing that the Guitar Hero II X-plorer guitar controller can now be used in Frets of Fire thanks to the Pref360 controller driver. The whole thing originally came about when TUAW blogger Mat Lu asked Colin Munro, the creator of Pref360, to help him get the X-plorer controller to work with Pref360 and, in turn, Frets of Fire. If you're not up to doing some technical work on Pref360 itself, don't worry. The latest version, 0.05, now has native support for the X-plorer controller. According to Lu, the Pref360/X-plorer combo "works great with Frets of Fire; just install Pref360 and then go into the Frets of Fire button setup and you should be able to assign the fret and strum buttons (the whammy bar is not yet supported in Frets of Fire)." You can download Pref360 for free from Tattiebogle.net. |

Tiger (of Global Donimation fame) is back with yet another fun addition to everyone's list of GlovePIE scripts. This time, he combines GlovePIE, the Wii-based control scheme for Resident Evil 4, and a copy of the PC version of the game to make a functionally identical version of the Resident Evil 4 Wii on your PCs.
Here's what he had to say about the script: For gamers that don't have the patience to wait a little while for Capcom's official Wii port, I've made a GlovePIE script which lets you use a Wii Remote and Nunchuk to play the PC port of Resident Evil 4 (aka Biohazard 4), with "Wii Edition" controls. This script uses motion control for aiming and doesn't require a "mouse aim mod", but I'm already at work on another script to add IR Sensor Bar support. He also has three videos up featuring Leon Kennedy tackling the early parts of the game. If you'd like to know how the game plays with Wii controls before you get the game for the Wii, then you might want to take a look at the vids for yourself, and perhaps give it a try on your own computer. Enjoy! More videos after the jump! |

Leave it to Datel to package something meant for every Wii lover out there. There's now news going around the internet of the quirky-looking Mii Manager, a device that allows you to edit your Mii on the PC.As the Codejunkies website describes Mii Manager, Our powerful Mii Manager software lets you edit your Mii on your PC. It’s a doddle to use. Just import your Mii into the editor, then edit it until your heart’s content. You can even share your Mii with Wii gamers from all over the world over the internet! The whole package comes with their own software app for PC use, as well as a a USB Bluetooth receiver which they say would "let you use your Wii-mote with your computer." There isn't mention of the GlovePIE application, though, which is the app commonly used to manipulate PC interfaces through the Wiimote, so be wary of the fine print on just how well you can use the Wiimote with your PC. Still, not bad for those non-techies who have 20 bucks to spare. Oh, and one last thing. Anyone know what a "doddle" is? |

Remember that psychedelic shooter Rez? Amidst rumors that it'll be ported to the Wii (or at least a new version), irontiger over at YouTube decided to try out the gameplay of the shooter with a Wiimote anyway.
He's playing the Dreamcast version and using his very own GlovePIE (Glove Programmable Input Emulator) script. He emulated Rez on his PC and used the Wiimote and Nunchuck. He can use either one, as the Nunchuk's joystick overrides the Wiimote's motion-sensing. According to Tiger, he just tweaked with his Panzer Dragoon GlovePIE script to play Rez. Here are his notes from YouTube: I made it to use either Wiimote motion or Nunchuk joystick control. I periodically unplug and replug the Nunchuk throughout the video to demonstrate. Because this is the Dreamcast version of the game run through emulation on the PC, I won't be sharing the script or info on how to play it. For those who aren't really into Wii homebrew, you might as well wait for Rez for the Wii. If you wanna check out the Panzer Dragoon script, you can click the via link below. In the meantime, check out the video. Thanks for the tip, Tiger! |

The moment Nintendo Wii's motion-sensing controller became widely available, gamers across all platforms were like, "Let's see what other things this white stick can control." And as very well documented, we've seen that the Wiimote can actually control a lot: from guitars, cars, EverQuest II, and even rival console PlayStation 3 (PS3).
Among the many uses of the Wiimote was for playing in World of Warcraft (WoW). The coder displayed through a video tutorial how one can actually explore Azeroth using the Wiimote and it was rather amusing. This next one goes along that line as well. Chris Heald from online blog Anti Arc was able to modify the said controller and made it compatible with WoW's fishing activity. Before this works, Heald reminds that you should bound first "Shift+F" to the fishing skill and turn off the AutoLoot function. Once that is done, the controls become relatively easy: Hold button "A" and do a casting motion to make your WoW character cast. Moving the Wiimote up without pressing the "A" button will reel your fish in and autoloot the content. Likewise, the Nunchuk serves as the mouse. Pressing the "B" button plus moving the Nunchuk will move your camera. It's actually pretty nifty and Heald has a proof-of-concept video for all of you. In case you want to know more about the GlovePIE script, the Read link will take you to Chris Heald's blog. |

Tiger from Global Donimation informed us of yet another one of his little projects meant to awe fans of the GlovePIE persuasion. He's managed to create a GlovePIE script that controls the PC port of Sega's Panzer Dragoon game.
He's got two videos here for us to enjoy. Basically, he finishes episodes one and two of the game for us, and it's quite amazing to see the script work so well with the PC port. We would have expected to see some trouble, but it seems to play just as well as it should. In any case, enjoy the two videos, and feel free to grab the script from him if this little innovation piques your curiosity. Just don't expect to be a master dragon handler overnight, eh? |

Alien Hominid is one hard game. All of us here at QJ have taken turns at it on Xbox Live and that's pretty much the general consensus around here. Tiger of Global Donimation (no, that's not a typo) concurs with us, and he's even playing the PC version (the keyboard controls are psychotic compared to the already-hard console version).
Instead of just whining about it and crying himself to sleep about it, though, he went and did something better: a Wiimote mod for Alien Hominid. According to Tiger, while his previous GlovePIE scripts were just proof of concepts, this one is "out of necessity" as "the level of frustration increases exponentially when using the keyboard as the developers originally intended." If you've felt the same way, download the script below. If you don't have GlovePIE yet, you can get it here. Also, check out this video of the script in action. Tiger sent us in an amazing lead for the Wii, focusing on one of the many applications of a well-made GlovePIE script for gaming purposes. He's sent us a link to three videos showing Sega's House of the Dead III being run on the computer, with the Wiimote and Nunchuk serving as the shotgun for your battles.
As you can see in the three videos, you're using the Wiimote to aim and fire while the shotgun's reloading function is activated by cocking the Nunchuk. What's so great about that? Well, that's the way a shotgun used to work in the old days, and it's that type of pump-action shotgun that remains in some modern guns even in this day and age. Of course, it's not an invitation to use the real thing, but you have to admit that the application of GlovePIE here is very cool. In any case, enjoy the videos below, and look to the source link for the script, if you're thinking of trying it out for yourself. The full article awaits after the jump! |
