FreeStyle Games' B-Boy
is viewed by many as one of the best video games for the PlayStation
Portable that never made it to North America. It was first released in
Europe back in 2006 and then in South Korea earlier this year. Now it appears that B-Boy is coming to the States after all, if we are to believe a new listing posted by rental store GameFly. Read more. |

Video game development studio FreeStyle Games is known for its title B-Boy that appeared both on the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2. The game, unknown to most, was created with the help from the manufacturer of energy drink Red Bull. The two announced a renewed partnership. While FreeStyle noted that they will be coming up with a series of new titles co-developed with Red Bull, the studio refused to divulge any information about the said games, save for the info that it will appear on new systems. FreeStyle Commercial Director Chris Lee commented: This partnership goes way beyond the in-game advertising deals seen in video games to date. It's important to stress that we're working hand in hand to co-develop and design compelling, triple A titles that will be a true reflection of the Red Bull Energy Drink brand, as well as great, original gaming experiences in their own right. Chris Lee added that release dates and publisher information will be made public shortly. This plan to make games for new-gen systems has been in the making for several months now. It should be remembered that a similar announcement was made by Lee back in September of last year. |

Do you guys remember B-Boy? Yeah, that hip-hop themed break-dancing title from FreeStyle Games that was released in North America back in October 2006. Well, Sony Computer Entertainment Korea is happy to announced that the video game will finally be available in Korea. We know you are already familiar with this title but in case you haven't noticed, three of the many in-game characters actually hail from Korea. They are Hong10, Physicx, and Darkness. Aside from these, the rest of the b-boys will also be making an appearance, there are 40 all in all, mind you, and some of the most notable ones include Crazy Legs, Ivan "The Urban Action Figure", Crumbs, Benny, Kamel, and Mouse. Basically, the objective of the game is for players to learn and master around 800 motion-captured moves. The game will start in street battles, and if you are good enough, you might actually reach the World Championships. As players progress, their character will earn style, sponsorship, and respect. And for those who really want to make a name for themselves, B-Boy allows complete character creation that can be modified further in terms of breaker and even wardrobe. There's an arcade mode as well as multiplayer face-offs using PlayStation Portable's (PSP) wireless functionality. All battles will take place in 21 realistic values. As if these aren't exciting enough, the video game also has its own original soundtrack which features 40 licensed contemporary hip hop and classic funk tracks, mixed and scratched on the fly by in-game DJs. |

Massive games for next gen consoles with massive capabilities call for dev teams with massive numbers. Not really. That's according to FreeStyle Games' Commercial Director">Chris Lee, FreeStyle Games' (B-Boy) Commercial Director. Not only is it fun working with a really tight-knight group where everyone in the team knows each other. Lee adds that with publishers "working on franchises and quoting massive development costs", enlisting small teams to develop games seems like a feasible idea. Of course, that doesn't mean we should wipe out large teams entirely. After all, there are some projects that needs a large group of people to work on it. Now, whether you agree with Chris Lee or not is entirely up to you. Let me just end with what he has to say about next gen and indie studios: "The real next-gen experience is about new forms of fun and independent studios are better placed creatively to deliver on that." |

You love them, you hate them - product placement advertising in video games. Hey, some ideas like Pepsi in the Shire will never fly. But there are some product placements that make or should make absolute sense. Sports equipment and sportswear in EA Sports is the perfect example. Then there's spray paint companies in B-Boy. Yes, spray paints. Because graffiti tagging goes hand-in-hand with hip-hop and B-boy culture. (Remember GTA: San Andreas?) Montana Colors SL, a well-known brand in the world of paint-in-a-spray can, has collaborated with B-boy dev team FreeStyle Games and in-game ad specialists Hive to get their cans in the breakdance game. "B-Boy represented a great opportunity for us to reach our target audience via an innovative advertising platform," said CEO Ruedi Glatz. Besides the brand, even Montana's own in-house graffiti artists, the Montana Writer Team, have contributed their artwork to B-boy. "It is critical that prospective players from the hip-hop community view the game as a sympathetic representation of their world, otherwise people simply won't play," says Hive's Rachel Norman. Adding the brand of choice for taggers and graffiti artists everywhere is just one of many steps to bring the hip-hop culture of B-boy to life, such as the soundtrack we've featured earlier. |
