2029, April: Apophis will fly past Earth. This could potentially be dangerous to us. Measuring in at 300 meters in width (980 feet), the asteroid is said to be invading our territorial bubble at a distance closer then many communication satellites. Not good. Definitely not good. But fortunately, we have about a little more than two decades until that happens. And we better make good use of that time lest we become just another sprinkle of dust in the universe. UK space scientists fully understand this, that's why they have thought of a way to get to know the enemy better. Through the Apex (Apophis Explorer), we earthlings could have a better understanding of the makeup of the asteroid: size, shape, color, spin, composition, and temperature. Although doomsday speculations have already been refuted regarding Apophis, it still would do us well not to be complacent and take any chances. The prediction that the Apophis asteroid will zoom past Earth only at 36,000 km at most is devoid of certainty, and as such must be closely looked into. The Apex could be just the key to the asteroid's mystery. With the remote-sensing aircraft able to get close enough to the asteroid, data could be picked up, sent back to Earth and then analyzed. From there, we can then have the homecourt advantage. But the Apex is nothing but a mere concept as of yet. And you can say it is one heck of a brilliant idea it is - with a price tag of £ 25,000 (US$ 50,000). You can only imagine how much more it'll cost once the mission gets the green light. Then again, I guess we shouldn't mind shelling out millions of dollars if it means saving ourselves, right? Thanks to G.C for the tip! |

BigBig Studios' original Pursuit Force was a fun game, but it was by no means perfect. With the upcoming Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice, fans of the game have been wondering about what changes and refinements the developers will be implementing.Lead designer Chris Whiteside was recently interviewed by Kikizo and he gave a little peek at the developments, heartaches, and change that came with the development of the new game. You know that this is going to be a good game because from the get-go, the development team at bigBig listened to the gaming community and did a lot of research on how to improve the game. It's quite a painful experience. You've got to look at it professionally. Initially when you see things, and you're so close to the project, you hope that everything's perfect. Sometimes that isn't the case. We've made a conscious decision not to begin production of any new stuff until we'd gone through and worked out plans for fixing the existing thing. One of the strong points of the previous game came from the relatively engaging story and the feeling that you were a hero. Yes, it sounds very movie-ish, but that's where these guys drew their inspiration from. The trend looks to be continuing with Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice. According to Whiteside, the development team and himself watched a number of movies to prepare for the game's development. "The most exciting thing about it was that we realized quite quickly that to deconstruct and then reconstruct into our medium wasn't that difficult, once you have a basic understanding of how they do things," said Whiteside. Finally, he discussed the game's tracks - all of which were re-thought and re-designed. For those who played the first version, you might remember the rather sharp turns that most tracks in the game had. It was very unforgiving, and to be honest, not really that fun. Whiteside said that the turns were changed to be a little... gentler. It allows for an easier drive, but it also allows for the player to be more strategic and focused on the action around him. Because the roads are so wide now you get that Burnout effect of being able to take an apex of a corner and slide for about 200 metres around it. Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice is slated for release this September on both the PSP and the Playstation 2. If this game turns out the way Chris Whiteside looks to be designing it, then this game could very well be one of the best games released for both platforms. Maybe you read last time that Mario Strikers Charged was exclusively shown in GC? Well, we've seen it! What was the apex of the whole video? Was it Lahm playing the game? It was a nice touch for validity's sake, but we thought that Mario rising up to the sky and hitting that football hard was just so Matrix-like in effect. It reminded of the time we first saw the bullet-effect in the first Matrix, so cool. Defending the goal post will probably cost you some calories as it requires you to hold up both controllers to try and block the ball from going in. You'll be seeing more physically fit gamers thanks to this game. We noticed something as well. Was that Browser holding the ball? Ain't that illegal? Is this "The Hand of God" Browser-style? Overall, it looks like a fun game to play with friends on a Saturday night all the way to the wee hours of Sunday. Perfect fit for Nintendo's goal of making games interactive - literally. |

The European Southern Observatory's Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) 12-meter sub-millimeter telescope is now online and providing scientists with clear views to the "Cold Universe." New findings include the discovery of a new interstellar molecule, and the detection of light emitted from carbon monoxide molecules as well as two forms of a charged hydrogen molecules containing fluorine. The phenomenon was discovered near the Orion nebula, one of the most active stellar nurseries in the Milky Way - and closest to our own solar system. This adds greatly to scientists' understanding of interstellar chemistry, and indicates that hydrogen fluoride is common in interstellar gas clouds. APEX has also detected light from charged molecules of hydrogen and deuterium in several cold clouds in the southern hemisphere, as well as the first observations of atomic carbon in the "Pillars of Creation" region of the Eagle Nebula. APEX went on to perform a sub-millimeter study of a massive hot core, of a high-mass star forming region, and a high velocity outflow coming from a young stellar object. Studies of molecular regions in the galaxies NGC 6822 and NGC 253 were completed successfully, proving that APEX can also contribute to the exploration of objects outside the Milky Way Galaxy. Millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy is a field which deals with the study of the formation processes of stars and planets. The APEX telescope will allow astronomers to study the chemistry and physical conditions of molecular clouds - dense regions of gas and dust in which new stars are born. |
