TimeManager library v0.1 - Image 1Now this isn't a homebrew application per se, but coder Yan2Yan's mini library could help other homebrew developers toy around with time functions on the Sony PSP. This would include getting time lapsed in the smaller units of chrono-measurement - all the way down to milliseconds - as well as attempt stopwatch functions with pause and resume functions. More at the full story.

PSP Blocks Fusion v1 - successor to Elemental demo - Image 1PlayStation Portable homebrew developer Yan2Yan has just finished coding his game PSP Blocks Fusion, a homebrew previously known as Elemental.

If you missed our first coverage of this game, PSP Blocks Fusion is a Tetris-like puzzle game with the objective of eliminating all blocks by lining up four or more same-colored ones. Pressure will come from the never-ending new layer of blocks falling from the top of the PSP screen.

A couple of days ago, the XtreamLua.com and Gx-MOD.com sites announced the finalists for their XtreamLua/Gx-MOD contest, which showcased several interesting homebrew applications and games for the PSP homebrew community to see, enjoy, and use.

Now, in case you've already picked up game pack #1, we're letting you know about the release of the XtreamLua/Gx-MOD Lua contest 2007 finalist's Game Pack #2, which features four more homebrews: Vortex Battle Arena Release 1, Elemental, and Morshock v0.1, and DestroyDust v0.5.

Vortex Battle Arena Release 1
Developer: Akabane87

This game will have two players competing at destroying the most balls of the same color a their own sprite. Players gain additional points for destroying balls matching their color, but will lose points if they destroy balls of the same color as their opponent. Interestingly enough, it appears that both players will play on the same PSP, at least according to the controls:
  • Player 1 (located on the left and having the red ball):
    • D-Pad (up and down arrows): Move the gun
    • Left trigger: To draw
  • Player 2 (located on the right and having the green ball)
    • Triangle and X: Move the gun
    • Right trigger: Draw
  • Start: To leave the part

Who is on Fire? was created by Yan2Yan - Image 1 Who is on Fire? was created by Yan2Yan - Image 2

The moment we found the homebrew game Who is on Fire?, we had to try it immediately because of some childhood dream we never got to follow. Anyway, in this game, players take on the role of a fireman and the objective is to save as many penguins as possible from a burning establishment.

What you do is direct the ladders to the burning windows so that the penguins can use it to climb down the building. Take note that you won't be able to save the poor critters if the windows are still burning. Just like a real-life fireman, you have to hose down the fire before the penguins will automatically use the ladder.

Who is on Fire? was created by three developers, namely section, Yan2Yan, and Genevois, over at XtreamLua.com. While this is the first time that we're covering this game, this is actually the third version of Who is on Fire?. The previous versions have been included in the download package below.

Who is on fire? v0.4 - Image 1

And once again, Guyver2, Yan2yan and Genevois are back with their homebrew, Who is on Fire, which is now at v0.4. We last heard from them about a week ago, and it seems that they're pretty quick when it comes to polishing up their game.

For those who may not be familiar with this homebrew, the objective is simply to rescue some poor penguins who were trapped inside a burning building. To do this, the player will have to put out the fire so that the penguins can climb out of the window, and then a ladder will have to be placed to help the penguin get safely to the ground. In any case, for v0.4 of this game, the following updates and fixes were made:
  • Principal Bug almost entirely corrected
  • There is from now on an animation of the "angels" of the penguins flying towards the sky
  • Bug with these same angels in level 2 are corrected
  • The images are from now in png format
The creators of Who is on Fire? have also included two versions of the game, one of which runs on OE and the other on non-OE.

As for the controls of the game, just remember that L and R are for shooting water onto the flames, while X, Square, Triangle and Circle move the ladder around. Meanwhile, you can cancel the game by pressing the Home or Start buttons, and you can take screenshots by pressing Select. Enjoy!

Who is on Fire? By Guyver2, Yan2Yan, and Genevese - Image 1 Who is on Fire? By Guyver2, Yan2Yan, and Genevese - Image 2

Flaming and penguins appear to be the order of this application we picked up earlier, appropriately named Who is on Fire? v0.2. This Lua-coded homebrew game is a three-man effort by coders Guyver2, Yan2Yan, and Genevese over at the Xtreamlua site.

The object of the game is for players to rescue penguins trapped in a burning building. Players will also need to douse the fires with water to let the penguins pop out of the windows - the player then places a ladder on the window to bring them down. The game currently carries one level with 20 birds to rescue, with graphics being done by Genevois. The background music may also be changed in later updates - keep alert in case a new version is released. As for game controls:
  • L/R buttons: Shoot water
  • Analog joystick: Aim water
  • Triangle: Move ladder up
  • X: Move ladder down
  • Square: Move ladder left
  • Circle: Move ladder right
  • Select: Screenshot
  • Start: Pause menu
  • In the Pause menu:
    • X: Resume game
    • Triangle: Return to Start menu
There are two files available for download: One is for PSPs running on fw 1.5, the other for PSPs running on SE and OE firmwares. To install Who is on Fire? v0.2, download the appropriate bundle according to your PSP's firmware version. Unzip the bundle, and load the two files found in the GAME folder into your PSP's corresponding GAME folder. Enjoy the game.
