Solar Panels power up the Network atop a Hindu shrine

Well, this is a pretty heartwarming tech story, if you've ever heard of one.

It starts off with the exile of Tibetans from their town as a result of the occupation of their home by Chinese forces in 1950. More than 50 years later, these exiles are finding new ways to connect to the world and expand their possibilities with the help of some tech savvy people, who not only want to help them connect from 7000 feet up in the Himalayas, but also want them to become masters of their own IT technology.

Members of The Cult of the Dead Cow, an underground computer security group, have been spearheading efforts to get the town of Dharamsala back on the internet without the need for expensive tech and the fear of rampaging monkeys. To do this, Dead Cow members such as Yahel Ben-David, who is both well-versed in tech and in the Israeli Military, worked with the people of Dharamsala to create the Dharamsala Wireless Mesh.
