QJ.NET Headplay review - Image 1The MacWorld Expo 2008 got us - and maybe most everyone else - into an Apple groove. The Manila envelope-sized MacBook Air sure made our trusty PowerBook feel a bit envious and unloved (yes, our gadgets here in the QJ.NET blogging labs have feelings too), so we decided to revisit a couple of our other gadgets. Not least of all is the Headplay, of course. Hitting two birds with one stone, we weren't just able to dish out a review of the head-mounted display, but we also managed to squeeze out some time to catch some movies too! Pass the popcorn, please!

Bizarre Creations, developer of The Club and Boom Boom Rocket - Image 1For those of you wondering what ever happened to The Club and Boom Boom Rocket, two games from Bizarre Creations, then you'll be glad to know that the developers have some good news. In a recent update from the developer's website, both games are looking to pass their respective certification tests and will be soon be released with solid features when they finally come out.

In the case of The Club, the two console builds (Xbox 360 and PS3) for the game will prove whether or not the game will push through with its "early 2008" release date as was previously announced by the developers. The PC version of the game, however, won't have to go through such formalities and is expected to follow the console version after hopefully passing the certification.

In a recent demonstration for The Club during the Game City event in Nottingham, the game showed off some of the game modes that were going to be featured in this third person shooter. Both the Sprint and Time Attack modes still rely on the player being able to rack up as many points to add to your timer across a certain stage or during an allotted time span.

As for Boom Boom Rocket, the new update for the game has recently passed its certification. While it wasn't announced when the new build will go live, Bizarre Creations has announced the list of new features this highly addictive XBLA game will be sporting:
  • Guitar and dance mat peripheral support
  • Japanese and Korean language support
  • Tweaked scoring system to make grade awarded more fair (now purely based on accuracy)
  • The huge loud "noise" which popped up occasionally on endurance mode is now gone
  • Occurrences of scores getting overwritten with a lower score when playing with 2 profiles signed in is now fixed.
  • Display updates when viewing the game through a VGA cable.
  • Friends leaderboard now shows extra information such as grade, accuracy, etc.
  • Multiplayer endurance mode fix for player colours swapping sporadically.
  • Slightly bigger and better explosions (updates to firework rendering)

RelaxView 5.0 Dental Pack, a new way to focus away from the pain while at the dentist - Image 1If you're the type of person who's afraid of the dentist and his deadly implements of cleaning, then here's a clever little device that might distract you while he pokes around inside of your mouth. Doing away with the standard anaesthetic treatment, patients can now focus on movies played through a video eyewear device during the operation.

The RelaxView 5.0 Dental Pack makes use of a 65 gram video eyewear with VGA resolution, which makes the patient see an image of almost 1.5 meters at a distance of three meters. The setup is similar to other video eyewear devices commonly seen in the market nowadays.

Communication with the dentist is still maintained because the patient is still able to have eye contact with the dentist by focusing the eyes above the video screen. The volume level is also adjustable through the earphones that go with the eyewear and ensures proper communication between the patient and the dentist.

Dr. Rob Roef, a dentist in Ninmegen, Netherlands, explains the concept of the new RelaxView 5.0 Dental Pack:

It is all about focus. Patients that, only occasionally see, hear, taste and smell the things that happen in a dentistry tend to become very sensitive even for the more simple procedures. The pain that people experience should not be minimised. Some people are so frightened that they require anaesthetic treatment, or they simply don't seek necessary treatment until it is too late. Facilitating and helping to get the patients' focus away from pain to pleasure pays off for both the patient and the dentist.

The entire package is worth EUR 300 (or around US$ 573) and consists of a premium pair of video glasses, together with a portable DVD player, model Discman, and a disposable hygiene set, all of which make the dental office a more relaxed place to be.

i-mate's QWERTY cellphone bombshells: Ultimate 8502, 9502 - Image 1A good old one-two to divert the attention away from the competition would be similar to what Ultimate series creators i-Mate did recently: drop two high-end bombshells. Introducing i-Mate's Ultimate 8502 and 9502, two QWERTY high-end cellphones running on Windows Mobile 6 operating system and sporting a specifications set like other sweet features decked on the competition's bleeding edge mobiles.

The 8502 and 9502 go all out black, though the 9502 (image to your right) sports quad-band GSM, 3.5G connectivity, and tri-band HSUPA powered through Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 operating system. It also comes with a video out port aside from providing crystal clear, crisp images through its sliding VGA LCD display, and LED flash for still captures.

But yes, it also jogs all the way down to the 2.5 millimeter audio jack, which doesn't quite broaden your headset options.

The 8502 in contrast touts a more simplistic design (no slide-down LCD screen), though its feature set is anything but simplistic. Aside from the usual WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity, you get 256 MB ROM and 128 MB RAM from the get-go, plus the 9502's 400 MHz Qualcomm processor. The camera slices down to a 2.0 megapixels from the 9502's 3.0 megapixel camera.

There are no details yet on price and retail shipping yet, so we can't tell you how much moolah you'll have to burn for i-Mate's new muscle gizmos. But as soon as they come up, we'll let you know. For now, feel free to visit i-Mate's website to take a gander at these beauties. The link redirects you to the Ultimate 9502 section.
