Chinese MMO - Image 1For a lot of students in the US and Europe, the first year in college signals a time of changes. If you're a Chinese online gamer entering college, however, your world just might flip over.

Chinese education authorities have taken notice of rampant delinquency among students hooked to online gaming. The incidents of students flunking subjects has reached very significant numbers, prompting academic institutions to act drastically.

Prominent institutions such as Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University have recently taken action in the form of a total ban on freshmen bringing computers with them. This is supposed to help them restrain themselves from all-night gaming sessions that cause them to neglect their academics.

Other institutions have taken similar action in the past, but the problem does not seem to die down amidst pressure against it. It has been noted that freshmen simply turn to internet cafe services for their gaming needs. Others resume the habit when they reach their sophomore years.

Internet addiction experts say that the academe should re-think its policies and try to address the root cause of the problems than trying to stop or delay the inevitable. Tao Hongkai, one such expert, says that educators should try to motivate their pupils to get over their addictions rather than try to curtail their fixes on their vices.

ghost recon 2 advanced warfighter - Image 1

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is about to be released for the PS3 on August 21, and we can't help but be excited to find out how the game will look like on Sony's shiny black console.

To help appease Ghost Recon fans' curiosity, Ubisoft Paris' Lead AI Engineer Olivier Didelot talked with Kotaku about the challenges that were presented in developing a game for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 simultaneously.

Didelot clarified that GRAW 2 for the PS3 is not a port of the Xbox 360 version, because the game for both platforms were developed side-by-side with Ubisoft Paris and Red Storm studios working on the Xbox 360 version, and Ubisoft Paris and Shanghai developing the game on the PS3.

Since PS3 hardware is different and required them to come up with ways to tackle game development, GRAW 2 for the PS3 is actually an original development. Furthermore, the differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 prompted Ubisoft in making sure that the GRAW engine will enable cross platforming.

This then allowed Ubisoft to develop the basic features of the game and optimized it according to the demands of the specific version they're dealing with. Didelot did not expound on each consoles' difference, but he explained:

For an engineer, the two platforms are critically different, with different strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, we feel that there's a real difference in the philosophy behind it. The very primary differences, in the way the processors are designed & combined or the way the memory is handled make them very different challenges for engineers.

Despite the differences however, the AI code is exactly the same for both consoles. Didelot said that the differences lie in how the AI code is handled by the hardware. If there were any discrepancies between the two versions, he assured that it will be invisible to the players.

GRAW 2 for both systems will have teammate's AI use voice feedback to help players out in locating enemies, while enemy AI will present considerable challenges by making full use of the terrain in attacking.

That certainly was a handful of useful information, straight from Ubisoft's Lead AI Engineer himself. For PS3 fans waiting for the game, why not check out the PS3 demo? Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2's PS3 release is just around the corner, but it won't hurt to experience the game in advance.

China's scientific abilities level up: clones rabbit - Image 1In a somewhat peculiar development in the scientific community today, China Daily reported that its motherland has produced the first cloned rabbit from cells taken from a fetus. "Chinese cloning research has reached a global advanced level," said Wang Hongguang, director of the China Centre for Biotechnology Development.

Although swamped immediately with claims from the international scene that French scientists have accomplished that same feat five years earlier, China Daily clarified that the "Chinese rabbit" was first to be cloned using "fibroblast" cells from a fetus.

As of press time, independent, third-party review or official publication of the find has yet to surface, inviting speculations that the discovery could turn out to be another South Korean cloning controversy - albeit no involvement of human cells.

The female rabbit grew steadily and normally since birth in February and currently resides in an animal center in Shanghai. The rabbit shares the same fate as many other animals such as mice and cattle, after the first cloned sheep, named Dolly, was attempted and successful back in 1996. Image courtesy of Daily Mail.

Cat survives a 35 day trip from China to New York...in a crate - Image 1The owner of Olympia Moto Sports located in Hendersonville Eric Congdon opened a crate from China and discovered a cat inside. The cat, which was appropriately named China, chewed through one of the boxes with motorcycle gear and got stuck in it when it was shipped from Shanghai last April 3.

Congdon gave an account of his discovery saying that "I saw something in the container move. I turned up the headlights on the fork lift to get a better look." He said that he saw the cat weak and cowering in a corner. When China wouldn't let them come close, they immediately contacted animal services in North Carolina. The ordeal for China does not end there since North Carolina law states that any animal entering the country has to be vaccinated and quarantined for six months.

How did China survive? Well, Raleigh veterinarian Michelle Misavage gave a theory on this amazing feat.

Usually we say that animals can only survive a few weeks without food and only a few days without water .The theory is that cats have such good kidneys their bodies adjust to the lack of water and somehow they received small amounts of moisture from condensation.

China is set to be adopted by one of Congdon's co-workers so at least we can be assured that there's a home waiting for it when it comes out of quarantine. Hopefully, China will live a long and happy life with its new master.
