Ó

I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years and brimming with teenage angst. I'm not going to sugarcoat the experience, it hurt BAD. I remember everybody telling not to be hasty because getting a tattoo is something permanent. If I get a design that I didn't like I'd have to live with "Sweet" or "Dude" on my skin for the rest of my life.

All that's about to change with Robert A. Freitas Jr., a senior research fellow at the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing in Palo Alto, California's dermal digital displays. The idea is to implant a display just below the surface of the epidermis, comprised of three billion light-emitting nanorobots that could rearrange themselves to spell out words and numbers with a tap of a finger.

Dermal DisplayFacial Display

Although it was first conceptualized to display bio-sensing readouts monitoring medical conditions such as diabetes to save precious time in an emergency, it is now being developed as a topical tattoo that could help us get in touch with our emotions much better.

Some people have the gift of reading how a person feels through their gestures or facial expressions, but for those not blessed with this kind of sensitivity, Sensor-transponders can interpret neural signatures related to specific emotions. It can even store events using Wi-Fi mapping, so you'll be able to know when you last felt exhilarated, angry, happy or sad.

Wireless Personal Area Network's (WPAN) pocket-sized server would be capable of synchronizing with a Wi-Fi enabled PDA and allow for uploading of new calendar data, display drivers and display imagery icons. The WPAN server uses wireless technology such as Bluetooth or UWB (ultra-wide band) to connect the components.

This technology totally eliminates one of the extreme don'ts when getting a tattoo: Getting a "Vow" tattoo or the name of your (current) significant other on your skin. It is believed that it jinxes you. But, you can't be jinxed if its programmable right?
