GameStop - Image 1These days, GameStop has a lot of reasons to celebrate. It's working on an industry that's growing every day, it's posting some serious numbers financially, and has recently opened its 1,000th store outside of the US.

The Texas-based game and console retailer has opened new stores recently in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Norway to hit the thousand-store milestone. Prior to that, the company has already branched out to Ireland, Switzerland, Australia, Guam, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

GameStop points to the booming hardware sales led by Kyoto-based Nintendo with its DS handheld and Wii console. Microsoft and Sony are also pitching in with the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, respectively.

Total sales posted by the retailer last year amounted to US$ 5.32 billion and is expected to grow even more this year as hot demand continues for pole platforms. The first quarter of fiscal 2007 saw GameStop with its best quarterly performance ever with US$ 24.7 million in profits while gross sales were at an all-time high of US$ 1.279 billion.

Black hole - Image 1Some 300 million light years away from the Earth lurks what scientists think is a group of dark monsters that may hold the keys to some questions that has boggled scientific minds for decades. If you want the less figurative version, researchers at the Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico are looking at distant supermassive black holes as the holders of the clues as to where cosmic rays originate and what the bizarre "noises" scientists hear are.

Supermassive black holes were only recently discovered and have been known to dwell at the center of some galaxies. These bodies are black as space and are nearly invisible if not for the gas, dust and light that they suck in never to be released again. As the gas and light spiral towards the abyss, they become superheated and begin to blaze bright, making it possible for them to be detected.

That's exactly what the Los Alamos team found. In fact, this one had a trail of superheated matter 6 million light years in diameter. To funnel in such mass requires a gravitational pull of godly proportions, leading the study team to theorize that there may be a cluster of black holes involved. What's even more amazing is the fact that this cluster doesn't have a galaxy surrounding it. Research head Philipp Kroonberg wonders:

What kind of mechanism could create a cloud of such enormous dimensions that does not coincide with any single galaxy or galaxy cluster? Is that same mechanism connected to the mysterious source of ultra high energy cosmic rays that come from beyond our galaxy?

Though much still remains unanswered, the researchers say that these black holes may in fact be a catalyst for transforming matter and light into cosmic rays. The noise that was earlier mentioned may in fact be a remnant of the big bang that gave birth to the universe. Whatever the case, the astronomers are digging deep into it using the Arecibo Space Telescope in Puerto Rico. We'll tell you as soon as they find anything new.

screenAndreas Seyfarth has done a wonderful job with Puerto Rico, a popular German boardgame, that his game has already received a remarkable number of prizes all over the world - including the International Gamers Award for General plus Multiplayer Categories.

Now Puerto Rico, which lets players assume the roles of Puerto Rico colonial governors during the Caribbean ascendancy, has been ported by johanb123 to the Nintendo DS. The first release already had game mechanics fully implemented with dummy AI players serving as opponents. Upon the release, johanb123 promised to improve on these AI and implement a TCP/IP multiplayer mode - so a few days ago, he gave us an update saying that work on the latter has already started.

Today, another Puerto Rico DS update comes our way: the multiplayer test is now in our midst. If you like to see how the multiplayer part of the game is faring right now, feel free to give the download (provided below) a go. Don't forget to provide your constructive criticisms and feedbacks on the game's state by leaving your comments below or visiting the Puerto Rico DS site (here).
