PS3 - Image 1Truth be told, I haven't really kept up with Dashhacker's progress on his reverse engineering of the PS3's Remote Play feature. It's still good to hear that he's made great strides towards finally releasing a usable app, though. There's even talk of an Open Remote Play beta out by Friday.

Wii homebrew - Image 1Here's a little something for those who have trouble remembering the XML tags needed to add homebrew applications to the Wii's Homebrew Channel. This app is called HBCXMLGen. It automatically generates the XML file that you need in order to add an app to the Homebrew Channel.

The architecture that Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is based upon allows peer-to-peer networking of PC units, networked appliances, and even some wireless devices. Sony's PlayStation 3 clearly fits into that list but it's kind of curious why people haven't tried it yet on the console.

Online site PS3mods has compiled a list of UPnP media servers for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and Python. They mentioned that among the ones listed below, they were only able to test Nero MediaHome. It was working alright but it wasn't a perfect fit.

Feel free to try the media servers below yourselves. If the PS3 is compatible with any of these, the media servers will appear on the XMB right away, doing away with accessing the web browser first.
  • Allegro Media Server (Mac OSX, Windows - commercial)
  • Cidero Internet Radio Server (Java - open source)
  • Cyberlink Digital Home Enabler Kit (Windows - commercial)
  • CyberMediaGate - (C++ - open source)
  • UPnP servers that might work with PS3 - Image 1EyeConnect - (Mac OSX - commercial)
  • Fuppes (Windows, Linux, port to NAS has been reported - open source)
  • Geexbox (Linux - open source)
  • GMediaServer (Linux - open source)
  • MediaTomb (Linux, port to NAS has been reported - open source)
  • Musimatch Jukebox (Windows - commercial)
  • MythTV (Linux - open source)
  • Nero MediaHome (Windows - commercial)
  • On2Share (Windows - commercial)
  • PyMeds (Python - open source)
  • Rhapsody (Mac, Windows - commercial)
  • SimpleCenter (Java Based - commercial)
  • TVersity (Windows - closed source, currently free)
  • TwonkyVision (Linux, Windows, NAS - commercial)
  • uShare (Linux, NAS - open source)

GNU Image Manipulation Program on Mac OSX - thanks to GTK+ porting - Image 1Well actually, it has been run natively, but it doesn't mean it loves OSX. In fact, M. Gagnon, the GIMP tweaker who we extracted this find from, has been able to build the GNU Image Manipulation Program in Mac OSX with Imiendo's GTK+ porting kit.

This isn't exactly new, but the porting of GIMP to Mac OSX is actually common practice for GTK+ porters, so that they can experience the porting process first-hand and then begin their own porting projects in greater detail. While it isn't exactly required that you know Linux code, it would be a great help to know if what you're doing is right.

But more importantly, perhaps, is that direct porting isn't always as simple as cha-cha. For a basic port, GIMP will sneeze a few glitches once in a while. But more often than not, it wouldn't be safe at all for everyone to use. Plus, as Gagnon found out, the ported program is difficult to distribute because of lack of package support.

If there's anything that you know that you think could help, hop on over to the GTK+ dev site and suggest your input at the forums. It's here you'll be able to view a step-by-step guide to performing your own port.

ecto's HTML editor

Ecto continues the Kung-Log tradition of being the best desktop blogging client out there for Mac OSX and Windows users. It supports a wide range of weblog systems, such as Blogger, Blojsom, Drupal, MovableType, Nucleus, TypePad, and WordPress.

The key feature of ecto is that unlike your weblog's control panel, you can use this application offline and enjoy the perks of writing and manage entries with the aid of tools like spellcheck, creating links, attachments, and much more.

Adriaan is still keeping us in suspense on ecto3. Currently, he is taking his time on the full rewrite of ecto2 to ecto3, so we'll have to wait a little more. Good thing he released v2.4.1 as a worthwhile filler. Adriaan says, "I have decided to release an Intel build of ecto 2.4.1. It is not fully tested and no support will be provided, but it should be a good interim solution for those having trouble running the PPC version on intel Macs."

Changelog:
  • Added localization files to the build.

iR Shell v2.1 - nethostfs Mac

Dagowatt, a coder from the iR Shell forums, has released a new updated version of his nethostfs application for use with Ahman's recently released homebrew shell program for the PSP, iR Shell v2.1. nethostfs allows iR Shell to interface with your PC and load files from it. It permits you to view and execute applications using files from your PC via a WiFi connection - just like having your PC hard drive in your memory stick slot.

This latest version is a Mac OSX port for nethostfs v1.5. It is currently in a beta stage and as such may include a few bugs. The only known bug at the moment means if you listen to a .mp3, you can not open .JPG files from your PC. This has been tested with iR Shell v2.1, but any bugs should be reported to Dagowatt in order to improve this program for future releases.

Have fun browsing your PC with your PSP - no wires required! If you don't have a WiFi router, remember that you can find the Mac OSX version of usbhostfs (the same as nethostfs but using the USB cable instead of Wi-Fi) here.
