Cell phone Web SurfingIn an effort to improve web surfing via cell phones, industry conglomerates such as Nokia, Vodafone, and Google have agreed on a set of website development guidelines. These companies could only hope that these agreed-upon guidelines will improve web surfing in cellular phones leading to a bigger market in the not-so-distant future.

As of now, a recent study done by M:Metrics shows that only a meager 19% of U.S. mobile phone users are taking advantage of their phones' web surfing capability. With that, an organization called the Worldwide Web Consortium hopes to improve this figure and with that, they have created 60 guidelines for developers that focuses on website designs that are very suitable for cellphone web surfing.

Some of the guidelines include not using big graphics or pop-up ads that could clutter phone screens and a site design wherein the content appears right at the top of a cell phone screen, allowing users to avoid scrolling past multiple navigation links. More importantly, the guidelines also steer developers away from using cookies, which store information on the viewer's computer to help websites remember user preferences, enabling speedier navigation.

Whether these guidelines will improve cell phone web surfing or not is something that only the future could tell. But this new development only goes to show that surfing the web via your handsets is far from perfect and most definitely, more guidelines should be approved to make surfing even better and less expensive.
