GPS smartphones such as the BlackBerry 8820 have become popular with today's modern road warriors so it's no surprise that Samsung has announced their own GPS phone, the SGH-i550. Reports say the unit is tentatively scheduled for launch this November but specific release markets or prices have yet to be officially announced. On paper, the i550 looks like it will be a strong contender in the mobile smartphone market. The unit is a tri-band GSM phone with 3G capabilities via WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) and is equipped with the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (Symbian OS 9.2). The i550 also comes with a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, HSDPA connectivity, a 3.5mm audiojack, a 1200 mAh battery which is said to be good for up to 24 hours of heavy use, and of course a built-in GPS receiver. The i550 looks to be a solid phone for workers and travelers. If the phone proves to be popular with the mobile phone community, then we'll undoubtedly be seeing more GPS enabled phones from Samsung. |

Because the wind can speak, we got word that Research In Motion (RIM) may already be at work on the new Blackberry 9000 series. Now this is all just rumor and speculation, but according to The Boy Genius Report, the phone will not only feature high-tiered HSDPA 3G and a processor clocked at 600 MHz, it will also finally have some form of a backup/restore function coupled with onboard flash. Also, the image to the right - courtesy of BGR - is just a concept art of the new 9000 model. Details as to whether it will take on the form of a touch screen phone or not remain unclear, another fuzzy detail is the actual 3G bands that the series will utilize. For sure, HSDPA 3G (simultaneous data and audio) is particularly certain. There's hope that the phone would be seen in more than just its concept form in the near future. Early 2008 is a safe bet as any, according to BGR. |

With Apple's iPhone now out, the Internet rumor mill has turned its attention onto other smartphones. Today we have some interesting - and, please note, unconfirmed - rumors about LG's new Windows Mobile smartphone.According to Arne Hess of The Unwired, the new LG smartphone is reportedly being readied for "a semi-exclusive cross-European launch in September". The phone will reportedly have Windows Mobile 6 Professional as well as UMTS. Furthermore, HSDPA support remains unconfirmed along with the smartphone's supported GSM and UMTS bands. The LG Windows Mobile smartphone is also rumored to have Wi-Fi by default, but some carriers may choose not to activate it. The design will be similar to the LG Prada and will be touchscreen-centric. The final phone will also reportedly not have the joystick or D-pad that the prototype seen at the 3GSM World Congress had. |

The newest addition to the Motorola mobile phone families has finally hit European shores. Dubbed the "media monster," the new MOTO Z8 kick-slider handset is now available in Spain, and will be rolled out to other European and Asian countries. The MOTO Z8 is indeed packed with media features of mammoth proportions. Memory capacity can be expanded to 32GB, using optional 4GB MicroSD cards; with a free internal user memory of 80 MB users can cram in up to 12 full-length movies or 70 hours worth of music. The Z8's 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x zoom can capture crystal-clear images, as well as record videos at a rate of 30 frames per second. The Z8 also comes with a lumi LED light, allowing you to take pictures and vids anytime, anywhere. With a QVGA 16 million color display, expect crisp, clear image and video playback on this phone. Powered with HSDPA and powerful dual processors, the Z8 will enable internet surfers on the go to browse the internet while listening to music at the same time without any problems. Spanish media lovers will have a chance to get the Mobile TV service - streaming TV in their Z8 - through local network operator Telefónica via Movistar. Mobile TV will be a network-dependent feature, so keep that in mind when buying the Z8 in anticipation of being able to take advantage of the Mobile TV service. Allen Burnes, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola Mobile Devices, sums up all the features the handheld has to offer. "With the Z8, consumers can listen to music, download video, create blogs and record and store memories all from the best multimedia platforms available today." |

To celebrate the Walkman phone series' second anniversary, Sony Ericsson will launch two new additions to the music phone family, packed with features never before seen in any other phone. The W910 is geared for high speed internet access, built with High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). The W910's new Walkman controls are also its selling point; you can skip tracks, and select songs with just a flick of the wrist. The W910 also features SensMe™, basically a new type of sorting through playlists, categorizing them based on tempo and style rather than artist or album. It also has an integrated visual method of sorting through songs. The W960 on the other hand, is built with Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), as an alternative to the W910's HSDPA. This enables the W960 to receive broadband internet at 2MB per second. The W960 has a sizable storage enough to cram in about 8,000 songs. It also has its own finger-touch navigation feature that lets you manually sort through playlists on a 2.6 inch display. The W960 is outfitted with a 3.2 megapixel camera, ideal for use as viewfinder as well as for widescreen video viewing. As we can see, both the W910 and W960 are designed with new ways of controlling and sorting data. The W910, for one, can be held like a handheld console and has an extra motion sensor feature for its 3D games. As for the W960, its Walkman application has a more in-depth navigation feature using the stylus. Sony Ericsson hasn't released any images for these two phones; but do stay with us as we dig up more information about Sony Ericsson's new music phones! Click on the Read link to get the lowdown on the W910's and W960's specs! |
