Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East demo charges online - Image 1

The newest stand-alone expansion to the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise has hit online download sites, or at least the demo, and fans of the series may finally try out the new Orc race that bundles with Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East. The download stands at a little less than 1 GB of data, and should be a great diversion for PC turn-based strategists.

The demo from Ubisoft will take players through a key episode in the Orc campaign - the invasion of the Griffin Empire. Players will guide Gotai, the young Orc warlord tasked with this mission, and attempt to build cities, recruit new units, and take the fight to the enemy, which would include toe-to-toe battles with brand new creatures.

The latest gameplay video from Folklore features Ellen, straight from the character selection screen. We find that Ellen and her mother was separated 17 years prior to the start of the game. She receives a letter from her one day telling her to meet her at a cliff. Once there, Ellen finds only a corpse which falls off the cliff.

This is probably what leads her to look for her mother in the Netherworlds. The video features more gameplay scenes of soul yanking and folk summoning. One of the creatures she summons is a huge beast that looks like what you'd get when a griffin and a dodo bird mates. The griffin-dodo creature attacks with a whirlwind attack and quickly disappears.

EverQuest 2 Game Update 37 - Image 1

Game Update 37 for EverQuest 2 is only days away from going live. To keep players updated with what's new in the upcoming update, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has posted a little sneak peek at the official EverQuest 2 website.

This sneak peek focuses mostly on mounts. In Game Update 37, traveling will be made easier in the Echoes of Faydwer expansion area. Butcherblock will become home to new griffin towers that will provide flights to the Butcherblock Docks, Lesser Faydark, and Greater Faydark.

Riding mounts will also be available in Greater Faydark for players' convenience. These mounts will take players safely from Butcherblock to Kelethin and Crushbone Keep. Good news for players who don't want to fall off the heights of Greater Faydark. The new transport modes will be unlocked by visiting each destination point while on a quest to activate them.

The Gigglegibbers will also be expanding their operations in Game Update 37. Players in the docks of Norath will be able to catch some entertainment while waiting for their ships. Game Update 37 will go live on July 31, right before Fan Faire.

Griffin iTrip Pocket - Image 1

iPod addicts who are worried about the lack of iPod connectivity in a long road trip can now breathe easy as Griffin introduces the iTrip Pocket, which is essentially a very small FM tuner that connects to the iPod and is tiny enough to be snug in a key ring.

Like other Griffin products from before, this one will allow easy tuning with the SmartDisplay user interface that shows the selected frequency. You can preset your favorite station frequencies for easy access. You can even jump from mono and stereo modes effortlessly.

Even with the huge space in your iPod flash memory, there's bound to be a time when you want a degree of unpredictability that is beyond just shuffling tracks. For those days, the Pocket will be more than willing to serve.

Encore has announced a tie-up with publisher introversion to bring the multiplayer online strategy game DEFCON: Everybody Dies to U.S. store shelves in the following months.

50,000 copies are set to ship stateside from Europe. "We are happy to be working with the team at Introversion to bring such a unique and innovative game to retail. There is simply nothing else like it," says Jill Griffin of Encore.

The RTS is unique in the sense that its gameplay promotes the killing of civilian targets rather than combat units. The strategy revolves around mounting a genocidal assault that will tear down the other camp's populace and fending off counter-thrusts.

The game is acclaimed because it's the most accurate simulation of WarGames in history. The low price point of .99 along with the straightforward yet intense action should warrant a purchase from strategy fans and casual gamers alike.

ChickenThe next step in the fight against cancer may just be for the birds. A UK-based lab has just announced the development of a genetically modified chicken, which now lays eggs containing proteins needed for cancer-fighting medicines.

The breakthrough was announced by The Roslin Institute, near Edinburgh - the same research facility responsible for Dolly the cloned sheep.

"The idea of producing the proteins involved in treatments in flocks of laying hens means they can produce in bulk, they can produce cheaply and indeed the raw material for this production system is quite literally chicken feed," said Professor Harry Griffin, director of the institute, in light of the normally high cost of cancer medicines.

Using a total of 500 genetically modified birds, the research team had engineered the fowl to lay eggs laced with complex proteins like miR24 and human interferon b-1a. The former is used for treating malignant melanoma (skin cancer), the latter used to prevent viruses from replicating in cells. The proteins are located in the egg white, which makes for easy extraction and refinement into usable drugs.

It is noted that there have already been similar uses of animals to farm complex proteins - such as the modifying of the milk given of by sheep, goats, cows and rabbits. What makes this research special is the sheer quantity of proteins that can be produced.

"Once you've made the transgenic birds, then it's very easy; once you've got the gene in, then you can breed up hundreds of birds from one cockerel - because they can be bred with hundreds of hens and you can collect an egg a day and have hundreds of chicks in no time," said Dr Helen Sang, leader of the this research project, who had been working on the project for 15 years.

Cancer cure hopefuls may have to wait longer before the medicine is released, however - the Roslin Institute says a further five years before they attempt human testing, with a further 10 years of waiting needed before the medicine is fully developed

For now, we simply wait for the day when a cancer cure is as simple as a nurse asking "Boiled, scrambled, fried or poached?" And perhaps a slice of toast...oh, wait...

boxart2K Games has announced that the hilariously dysfunctional family is now out to wreak havoc not only in your own homes, but anywhere and everywhere you go, as the PSP action game Family Guy has shipped to retailers and is now up for grabs.

All the characters you love, or hate, or hate and love, will be featured in the game, along with the entire cast and creative team of the hit TV show, which has been hailed as the closest competition of one of the longest-running cartoon shows, "The Simpsons".

The Family Guy for the PSP lets you take on the role of beer-guzzling Peter Griffin as he tries to stop Mr. Belvedere's sinister plans or Stewie, the diabolical youngster who tries to fight off his half-brother Bertram as the two battle it out to be The One who takes over the world. You'll also get to play as Brian Griffin, the family dog, and devise ways to escape prison and prove to everyone your innocence in a puppy paternity case.

Developed by High Voltage Software, the game combines arcade-like action, platforming, combat, and puzzle-solving as you play and progress through three interweaving stories in the typical hilariously chaotic Family Guy fashion. Family Guy is now out on the market so make sure you check with your local retailers for price and availability.

The success of his newly completed mind control device comes under threat, when an equally sinister punk of a kid goes after the satellite dish. Has little Stewie finally met his match?
