Sony Japan has added ten new downloadable PlayStation titles to its PlayStation Store offerings. These PSOne classics can be downloaded to the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 video game platforms for 600 yen (around US$ 5) each. Here's a list of the new titles:
  • PSN - Image 1Sanwa Pachinko Paradise
  • Sanwa Pachinko Paradise 2
  • Alundra
  • XII Jumbo
  • Popologue
  • Hanafuda Graffiti Koikoi Monogatari
  • Echo Night #2
  • King's Field III
While this is already a sizable addition, what's even bigger news is that this is only the first of two updates. Apparently, the Japanese PlayStation Store will be getting two archive updates a month starting this month. We'll bring you more updates as soon as the next batch of PSOne titles are announced.

PSP Gallery Demo made with the Dungeons Engine 2 - Image 1

PSP homebrew developer charnold, who is known for his work on the homebrew PSP Dungeons, has come out with a rather impressive tech demo of his Dungeons Engine 2. The PSP Gallery Demo shows off the improvements that were made to the engine such as the rendering of colored lightmaps and more complex 3D objects (as compared to the original build).

The demo is pretty sweet and allows you to walk around a virtual gallery. The textures, renders, and lighting look professionally done, the question is how was it done? The developer gave word that the lightmapped polygons are rendered in two passes or more, each with a different texture. There can be more depending on the image being rendered such as graffiti or glowing lights.

So download the program and try it out. Charnold has stated that this engine might even be developed into a game in the future, which is something that you might want to look out for.

No truer words have been spoken. - Image 1And you thought we had problem with spam... the town of Garner, North Carolina has been plagued with someone spamming "Ghost" all over buildings and street signs, reports the Charlotte Observer. It's ticked off local government officials, it's a pain trying to clean up after this guy, whoever he/she is, they can't tell who the heck's doing this vandalism the first place.

The town's Board of Aldermen have passed a resolution, which besides ordering the graffiti removed within 48 hours, are offering a reward of US$ 1,000 for the perp. And if the perp happens to be a juvenile, they sweeten the pot with either US$ 500, or an Xbox 360, or a PS3, or a Wii.

(Now you know why we placed this story under Deals... although, er, it's kinda akin to "deals" as in the ones suspects make with prosecutors when they want to turn state's evidence.)

All kidding aside, these town officials do take their civic pride very seriously. On the other hand, we kinda pity the workload they face: imagine the flood of tips - some of which will turn out to be duds - they'll have to sort through for that kind of reward.

The Warriors graffiti ad? - Image 1

Okay, first off, it's either Rockstar is pulling off a Sony advertising boo-boo OR one fanboy decided to do it for them. Yes boys and girls, what you're seeing above is a graffiti ad (if we could still call it that) for The Warriors spotted by PSPFanboy's Andrew Yoon whilst walking along downtown New York.

If you could still remember back in January last year, graffiti ads were found all over the walls of various U.S. cities (and even Amsterdam) to promote the PSP - much to the dismay of locals who got irate upon seeing the ads. During that whole fiasco, there was the issue of whether Sony really was responsible for the ads popping up or whether they were just mere "fandalisms" that the company wasn't aware of.

Same thing applies here. Although Rockstar isn't exactly the type of company to worry over such things (hello, GTA lawsuits?), the fact that the company's office is located in NYC could fan the possible flames they might get from such sightings. But whether this is the company's doing or just some random fanboy vandalizing the streets of NY for kicks, no one knows for sure. One thing you could say though, Rockstar couldn't get any more 'street' than this. Harhar.

Lakebed Greek? - Image 1 Let's all take a little dip into Lake Hylia in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Okay, so you've just received the Zora Armor - which works much like scuba gear - and you're swimming around the Lakebed Temple. You look at the walls and (gasp!) find curiously familiar graffiti.

Jack at the Desert Colossus took some pictures of entrance to the Temple and thought the writings looked like Greek characters. After asking for help from Hellenophones (those who understand Greek), they have decided that the characters are a bunch of gibberish since the decipherable letters are mostly consonants. Then why is it there? What is it's purpose?

They've failed using the Hawkeye underwater and could only use the Clawshot to get a better look. Anyway, if anyone can shed some light into this little mystery, it would be much appreciated.

Downhill from here

The other day, Vicarious Vision sent out an email to the Sk8land community about their upcoming game, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. What's in it? News on something a lot of DS gamers have been clamoring more of. Read on, friends...

The Tony Hawk franchise is known for its fresh, gravity-defying games, but this time they'll be doing something of a first for the Nintendo DS: In-game voice chat. Imagine you can spend the whole afternoon either shouting props to your friends for getting the Backslide Lipslide or the Ollie Fakie or smack talk on how they missed the Frontside 180 Powerslide or the Nollie Frontside Pop-shove-it. No official news yet on how this will be implemented, although some rumors are saying that friend codes may be required for chatting. So what else will you be expecting come October 25?

Besides the feature mentioned, there's more to this game than you can shake a stick at. The game will have 50 graffiti and skate decks courtesy of Sk8land's best artists, an option to create custom clothing & skate decks, and global score rankings. Looks like the game may be starting something new on the DS. Let's see whether this will take the game downhill or uphill.

Patent InfringmentPalm recently announced that they had settled a patent infringement lawsuit first filed by Xerox Corporation nine years ago. Under the reached settlement, Palm will pay Xerox $22.5 million, which includes licensing fees for Unistrokes and two other patents. The agreement also calls for "patent peace", a seven-year mutual covenant not to sue within mutually agreed fields of use. Xerox's seven years of waiting paid big dividends.

Xerox first filed the suit in April 1997 against U.S. Robotics, which at the time was owner of Palm Computing. They are alleging that Palm's Graffiti handwriting recognition software infringed a Xerox United States patent relating to computerized recognition of handwriting. The patented technology is Xerox's input technology called Unistrokes.

The Unistrokes technology was invented at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) by David Goldberg. Palm got a demonstration of Unistrokes from PARC before they created their Graffiti system. During the original case, a court ruled that Palm violated Xerox's patent and ordered them to discontinue use of the original Graffiti system in further versions of its Palm OS software, which Palm did. It replaced the original Graffiti system with a licensed variant of the Jot system from CIC, which Palm refers to as Graffiti 2.

So what are the juicy bits of the settlement? Aside from the $22.5 Million pay-off, Palm's co-defendants, including PalmSource, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of ACCESS Co., Ltd., and 3Com Corp. will receive a full and unconditional release from the litigation, and each is entitled to a fully paid-up license to the Unistrokes patent.
