Sony PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1You have to hand it to Travis and the new LED mod that he was able to pull off on the PlayStation Portable. He was able to add a lot of bling on his handheld and literally put it up in lights - 30 LEDs worth of light to be exact. The mod places various LEDs around the handheld and even hooked up some of them to be responsive to the PSP's WLAN feature. Check out the video of the mod in action in our full article.

Different colored skins available for Sony's PlayStation Portable - Image 1AcidMods site member F00 f00 isn't called the veritable god of PSP customization for nothing. His latest PSP mod puts together not one, but actually two mods into one handheld.

The rig consists of carefully adding additional LED points from the original, with the note key switching the indicator from mem to power to WiFi. A second mode changes the LED scheme to a light blue with a variation for a pulsing effect tied in with the headphone amp. More on this and the video after the jump!

While the PSP's Chotto Shotto (aka the Go!Cam) camera boasts a handy set of functions, one issue some peopel have with it is that it sits prominently on top of the frame, and really messes up the PSP's otherwise streamlined exterior. Rex over at the AcidMods forums apparently had the same issues, given this new modding project that's just been finished.

This mod has the camera installed directly inside the PSP Phat, in place of where the UMD drive used to be. Here's Rex's video demonstration to give you a better idea of how it works:

Rex further noted that future projects include plans to build the Chotto Shotto into the PSP Slim. What makes this attempt interesting is that it won't involve removing the UMD drive. That's it for the moment, although you guys may also want to keep on the lookout for a tutorial - the modder plans to release one soon.

Kudos goes to F00 f00 for tipping us off regarding this mod!

F00 f00's at it again with the wickedly-awesome PSP customizations, and looking at his latest work of art commissioned by one lucky SonicBuddha, we're all but tempted to send in our own handhelds for the legendary F00 f00 treatment. Here it is, courtesy by an email tip from the modder himself - SonicBuddha's PlayStation Portable, as pimped out by F00 f00. You can check it out in action from the video embed below.

While certainly one of the more prettier mods we've seen, we also can't help but appreciate all the hard work that was put into the customization. When you realize that those glowing amber lights actually pulse to any sound being played on the PSP's speakers, from in-game sounds to MP3s - not to mention the fact that it has two nubs to play with - you know it's a quality work done by a true master of his profession. Not too bad at all, F00 f00!

The complete details of the customization, with full-color images, are waiting for your perusal via the source link. Enjoy!

Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1Hot off the (virtual) press comes issue number three of AcidMod's recently published magazine, AcidMag.

Topics under discussion in this new release include the site's more recent notable mods, AcidMod's recent partnership with PSPGen, and iR Shell's latest version release. Also not to be missed is a short segment congratulating F00 f00  for recently becoming a part-owner of the site.

Much like AcidMag issue #2, number 3 can be downloaded either as a PC or PSP version - usage instruction are available in each file bundle's readme.

On a last note, guys grabbing the PSP version may notice that there are no download in this release - this is due to a bug that the team hopes to fix by Issue # 4. Guys interested in contacting the AcidMag team are directed to the read link below.

WIP: Virtual PSP Modder - Image 1

QJ.NET reader F00 f00 sent us an email regarding a homebrew program over at online site Acid Mods that will let users practice modding a PlayStation Portable unit. It's called Virtual PSP Modder and is owned by coder cyberpyrot. We really find this program useful as not all of us have the courage to crack open our dear handhelds.

Anyway, the developer noted that Virtual PSP Modder's most basic features will include simulation drills for soldering trigger LED's, changing faceplates, and customization with a large variety of buttons. Tools will be added as well such as screwdrivers, tweezers and magnify glass that are needed in disassembling the virtual PSP unit

The LED features are currently done and cyberpyrot is currently working on some fancy menu features. Like we said, this is still a WIP but the developer said that he is ahead of his release schedule so we can expect to see a version of Virtual PSP Modder soon.

Thanks to F00 f00 for the heads up!

Console modder F00 f00 has just announced an new experimental mod that he's finished installing in his DS. The mod involves installing the PulseVU chip (originally for the Wii) into the portable, which enables users to activate several eye-pleasing LED light effects on the unit. See the video below to get a better idea:

F00 f00 further explained that the DS' PulseVU add-on has 10 lighting functions, including music pulsing (Ouendan comes to mind...), a breathing effect that kicks in when the DS is set to sleep mode (switching on, with the unit's lid closed). Take note that this is still a prototype - we'll let you know if F00 f00 decides to share this mod with other DS owners.

Good mod man that he is, F00 f00's dropped us a line once again, telling us of his latest kick-ass mod. The AcidMods team is pretty well known for their mod-work, one of the latest was their right-side analog mod called the the "Razor Nub." This time around, hailing from their sound-reactive LED mod, we now have a PSP Rumble mod that activates from sounds. Take a peek at F00 f00's proof of concept vid:

The story behind this has F00 f00 working on a client's PSP (client here being robin1989), and while trying to do some LED modding, got distracted. He started playing around with a little spinning motor from a mobile phone and decided try his hand once again at a previously semi-unsuccessful attempt at producing force feedback on the PSP.

A few minutes of tinkering, and boom, he's done it. He even says that it was quite a simple mod: where voltage being sent to the speakers would also be routed to the motor to power it. (We're not sure if he was able to finish the actual LED mod though, but hey!, distraction leads to Einstein moments too)

Now a PSP Rumble feature has often been discussed in online forums everywhere. Some say that for Sony to have included such a feature in their handheld would just be a series of lawsuits waiting to happen - gamers would start complaining how their grip slipped on the PSP when it did force feedback. Other people simply dismiss the idea, saying that such a feature isn't necessary.

Whatever the case - whatever your reasons might be - you still can't deny how cool this mod is. Props for F00 f00; another great mod to add to the growing library in the PSP community.
