Sony PSP - Image 1Do you want to boot up your Windows-based PC with style using your Sony PlayStation Portable? There's a way to do just that because Sony PSP homebrew developer EvilDooinz has created a program called PSP WOL (Wake-on-LAN) specifically for that purpose.

The latest version of PSP Wake-on-LAN has recently been released and it's got some neat compatibility features added to allow most of us to use this homebrew application easily. There are three major changes noted for PSP WOL (Wake-On-LAN) version 2.1 and they are:
  • PSP Wake-on-LAN is now compatible with Sony PSP fw 3.x
  • Up to 255 connections / hosts supported
  • Added info screen
After downloading the file archive for PSP WOL, please check the readme file to know how to set up tour PC and Sony PSP for this application to work. Installation instructions and other important stuff are right there in the text, so please go through the readme before proceeding. Enjoy!

Hibernate? - Image 1 If you wanted to remotely turn on your PC to spook a friend out, now would probably be the best time to do it. EvilDooinz has created v2.0 of his PSP Wake-on-LAN application, a program that wakes up any networked PC in hibernation mode.

This time round, PSP WOL v2.0 has a small gui incorporated into it "to select your connection and choose what pc to remote start, or to start them all. "With this new addition, you can store up to 15 different PCs to turn on."

More or less, we can imagine some interesting possibilities with this. Spook a friend on Halloween by visiting the computer lab late at night and setting up all the computers to freak him out. Turn on your computer every morning from your bed. There are more than a few uses, but it all depends on the number of computers you have, and whether or not you're willing to follow the readme included in the application.

A PSP Icon - Image 1Homebrew coder EvilDooinz has just come up with an interesting application guys here may want to hear about, all the more if they own a Personal Computer (PC). The app is named PSP WOL, which is basically a Wake-on-LAN (WOL) application that allows your PSP to wake up a hibernating (networked) PC.

Going into further details, WOL is a PC option that allows the computer to be booted normally via remote link. This option is normally activated via the "Wake-on-LAN" setting on your PC's BIOS, although additional tweaking will be required in the Windows browser.

WOL works by reserving power for your PC's network card even after your computer is shut down. At this point, the network card is configured to receive a "Magic Packet" - a data bundle if you will - that's been broadcast for that PC's IP, which will then prompt the PC to boot up by remote. Imagine brainwashing somebody to wake up by a simple key word, and you get the idea. As a limitation, though, this PSP version is limited to waking PCs on hibernation or standby mode - it won't work on fully powered down units.

If combined with other PSP-PC remote access homebrew applications like Foobar2000 Remote Interface, PSPFTPD, or PSP WiFile Transfer , you can just imagine the potential flexibility PSP WOL grants PSP and PC owners. Installation instructions and IP setup for computers running on Windows XP await in the file README, which should be available in the download link just below you. EvilDooinz has also provided PSP WOL's source code - fellow coders may want to read this over to see how the application was made. Enjoy!

Any Sudoku fans out there? EvilDooinz just released Nanpure Rev 5, which is a follow-up for his much-enjoyed Nanpure homebrew game. Given that the game's already pretty solid, he's added a couple of extras to the game's layout:
  • Add 3 new modes to display icons, colors and patterns.
  • Compiled images into eboot and loaded them from ram.
  • Another new theme.
As for the nitty-gritty on how to install and play the game, check out the README files enclosed in either bundle. For those asking, Sudoku is played accordingly, courtesy of Wikipedia:

The objective is to fill the 9x9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 boxes contains the digits 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid so that there is only one solution.

Enjoy the game, which should activate your pre-frontal cortex. Kidding. It's still fun, though.

SudokuSudoku's quite a popular game for the PSP - just try searching through the site and you'll see coverage of quite a few Sudoku games, written by different people to boot.

Now Bruce Perkins a.k.a. EvilDooinz has jumped on the PSP-Sudoku bandwagon by coming up with and releasing a beta release of a Sudoku game of his very own for both 1.5 and 2.6-firmware PSPs. As it stands right now, his includes only one puzzle and one theme.

Features of this Sudoku game include a clean GUI and easy controls. EvilDooinz has a 'todo' list for the game; future releases will feature more puzzles and themes; sounds, hints; time status; score system; and a high-score board as well.

Installation instructions are as follows:

--install 1.5
copy the Sudoku and Sudoku% folders from 1.5 to PSP/GAME
--install 1.0 & 2.0+
copy the Sudoku folder from v1.0 v2.0+ folder to PSP/GAME
copy the folders Images and Sounds from the 1.5 folder to PSP/GAME/Sudoku
