PSPSEQ v2.10 was created by coder ecb - Image 1

Homebrew application PSPSeq has really come a long way. It really is something because it transformed the PlayStation Portable (PSP) unit into a sequencer and synthesizer system. To make things even better, developer Ethan Bordeaux (aka ecb at QJ.Net Forums) just released a new version of this nifty program.

According to the developer, the latest version of PSPSeq as well as the older revisions are relatively well-behaved apps - meaning you shouldn't encounter any problems if you do exactly what needs to be done. This has been tested on most custom firmwares. As for the improvements with PSPSeq v2.10, here is the complete changelog:
  • Automated interpolation of synthesis parameters
  • More track copying options to simplify and speed composing music
  • Button combos enabling instant solo/unmute of all tracks, copy/paste of synthesis parameters, and removal of hits in a track
  • Automated shifting of hits in a track for easy echo effects and arpeggiation
  • Ability to record to ms0:/PSP/MUSIC directory for playback of loops and songs outside of PSPSeq
  • More visualization modes and new visualization controls
  • Access to time, battery life and available flash memory within PSPSeq
  • New features for using PSPSeq in live environments
  • Optimized WAV file playback
  • Other minor bug fixes and optimizations to screen and audio rendering
  • Many new sample songs and loops
Aside from the Readme file, the download below is accompanied by an RTF file which should serve as the complete and full reference material for the program. Please be sure to browse through those files first to fully enjoy this application.

A question for the aspiring coder/composer: Why bother with listening to somebody else's tunes when you can make your own? Ethan Bordeaux (aka ecb at the QJ boards) is letting everybody know that his PSP Seq homebrew's long history of upgrades has just hit version 2.00. We're sure guys who have been enjoying previous versions of this synthesizer/sequencer pack for your PSP will appreciate this app's latest incarnation, which comes with these new tweaks:
  • 4 new synthesizers (2 FM, square wave with configurable PWM, and WAV sample-playback)
  • Over a dozen new waveforms for virtual analog synthesis
  • 1 new FX (waveshaper) + enhancements to existing FX
  • WAV file recording of songs and loops
  • GUI/control improvements to increase compositional speed and flexibility
  • 2 visualization modes
  • add & delete instruments from a song
  • core synthesis optimizations to improve polyphony
Both a 1.00 and 1.50 version are available in the bundle, as is the application's README - make sure to read that for installation instructions. Also make sure to check out the release forums for further details and discussions, as well as some sample music churned out from PSPSeq's controls. And while you're at it, why not throw in a couple of xmbWave generators to really get the groove moving? Enjoy the download!

UPDATE: Ethan Bordeaux (ecb in the QJ forums), has released an updated version of PSPSeq - v2.01. He says that this new version fixes a bug found in the sequencer when pushing on the D-pad too quickly. This could improperly transfer control from step editing to the transport. Along with that minor bug fix, he also fixed some minor GUI/ display bugs. He also issued a clarification as to how to install PSPSeq in OE firmwares, check out the forum release thread for that info.

PSPSeq

A little more than five months after Ethan Bordeaux released the PSPSeq v0.20, another full-blown update's been released - PSP Seq v1.00.  It's now available for download for you guys who just want a "normal" step sequencer and synthesizer for your demos.

The previous version proved to be a piece of work. Let's see what Ethan has got in store for us! He's got the list of features neatly outlined here:
  •  editable parameters on instruments
  •  customizable instrument groupings
  •  multiple loops/song sequence
  •  tap tempo
  •  multiple audio presets, new generators/fx
  •  improvements and optimizations to many of the generators and fx
  •  configurable step length
  •  proper swing handling
Remember though that this 'brew runs on all firmwares between 1.0 and 2.71, along with 2.71 SE. It won't work with 2.80/2.81 and can't be loaded via devhook or Hen-C. You can also find more info about the previous versions and the .rtf file included in the download.

UPDATE: We were informed by Ethan that he has released an updated version of his homebrew application, PSPSeq. Version 1.01 may just be a bug fix, but it did take care of three pesky bugs- "one with setting FREQMODE in some synthesizers, one with the loading custom presets, and one with the menu system." Keep up the great job Ethan and we hope to hear from you again in the coming days!
