Halo 3 expected to boost Microsoft's sales upon its release - Image 1Tagged by Microsoft as "the most highly anticipated game of all time and biggest entertainment event in history," nobody can deny the popularity of one of its best known series for the Xbox 360, Halo.

With the upcoming sequel scheduled to hit stores in a day or so, Microsoft is hoping to boost its profits with the game's release. Analysts at Microsoft have predicted that they will finally be making a profit this fiscal year.

Prior to this, the company has been suffering from more than US$ 5 billion in losses since the Xbox's launch in 2001.  The Xbox 360 exclusive title, Halo 3, will hopefully become a major proponent to this rise in sales for the company.

Edward Woo, a video games analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities, comments on the soon-to-be released title, "Halo is in a class by itself. This is going to be Microsoft's best shot, but I don't think anyone thinks this is a magic bullet that takes all the air out of the Wii".

With sales of less than US$ 5 million, they still have a lot of catching up to do against its other competitors.

PS3 price cut imminent? - Image 1Edward Woo of Wedbush Morgan Securities believes, as fellow analyst Michael Pachter does, that a price cut for the PlayStation 3 is imminent, and soon. Specifically, Woo believes that the price cut will happen once the supplies of the 60GB model have run out.

Woo speculates that the 60GB models could last until October, which makes his predictions earlier than Pachter's. Pachter, also of Wedbush Morgan Securities, believes that the price cut will happen early next year on the advent of PS3 exclusive games, particularly before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The question lies in timing: if Sony will introduce a PS3 price cut, when is the right time to do it? Pachter's theory places the price cut after the holidays while Woo's would place it right before. A price cut right before the holidays, a peak season for the games industry, would certainly boost sales.

A price cut right before the exclusives come out will boost sales as well. However, the advantage of introducing a price cut right before the exclusives come out is that Sony would have the holidays to maintain its momentum.

These are all only speculations however, considering Sony is still maintaining its stony silence on a price cut. We don't even know if it will happen, but we'll see soon enough.
