Microsoft has released new information about new extenders for the Windows Media Center. Taking its video recording capabilities to the next level, the Windows Media Center can now wirelessly connect with television sets all over the house. The setup allows you to pause a live TV broadcast on one TV and play it from the same moment on a TV in another room. The system is possible through a combination of technologies from Linksys, D-Link Corporation and Niveus Media Inc. which incorporates HD video, wireless networking and expanded support for a number of audio and video formats. The result is that you can play virtually any video you have on your computer into any TV connected to it. Conversely, it can also record video from any TV it's connected to. The new Windows Media Center is being demonstrated at the ongoing CEDIA EXPO 2007 in Denver until September 9. |

If you're a gamer and you live in Denver, there's a well-kept gold mine that you can capitalize on. Radio station KS107.5 is giving away Nintendo Wii's and in the future, Microsoft Xbox 360's to lucky people who will register when they catch up with them on these locations:1. 14088 E. Mississippi just east of I225 behind the Burger King between 3:00pm and 5:00pm, Saturday. 2. 84th and Pearl just east of I-25, Sunday at 3:00pm to 5:00pm. You can look for Slim as he is the man behind this contest. The word is that only a couple of people have registered so far, making the chances to win pretty fat. Registration for the Xbox 360 contest is now going on as well. |

As revealed by a report on GameDaily, the censorship wars just extended its battlefields to include game advertisements. The Parents Television Council previously started an anti-game ad campaign in Denver against those ads of mature nature posted in the public rail transit system. Although it heavily backfired, the PTC has succeeded in similar campaigns over in Boston and Portland.
PTC director Gavin McKiernan said that they were targeting mature game ads on video games and not those on TV or cinema (at the moment) because it is difficult for inappropriately aged viewers to enter a theater sporting an R-rated movie. Unfortunately for the gaming side, it's pretty easy to spot a game poster ad with M-ratings and remember the game's name. Nowadays that shouldn't be a problem, as the Federal Trade Commission noticed the climbing trend of point-of-sale restrictions with inappropriately aged buyers of games. But it seems that the PTC wants more than a couple of huge retail chains complying with the restrictions. In fact, it appears they want absolute barring of Mature content, even if it comes in the form of just ads. McKiernan also said: It's marketing [mature games] to kids, that's our main issue. There's a reason why the [game companies] buy these ads; they're effective. Billions of dollars are spent each year so they can get the message out to every member of the buying population. With the Video Game Decency Act and several other regulations closing in, the game industry might just end backed up into a corner. It's future: can you say, "Alamo?" |

Although some folks may have their objections, it seems that it has been decided that Grand Theft Auto ads can remain on mass transit in the Denver area.Rocky Mountain News reports that the directors of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) has rejected a campaign led by the Parents Television Council and the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood to ban advertising for games rated M and above. It was reported that it was the Operations, Customer Service, and Marketing Committee of the RTD that recommended the ban. However, after meeting with an attorney, the board voted 12-3 in favor of the game advertising. John Tyler, a board member notes: "It was a tough decision because I think our hearts as a board were with trying to limit exposure to advertisements that promote violence. But the overwhelming weight of the legal advice was that if we pursued this, we would face an uphill battle in court." ESA representative Peggi O'Keefe spoke to the RTD board, and reportedly called the ban: "...both unnecessary and unconstitutional. This proposal ...would restrict fully protected expression on the basis of content ...Such restrictions are constitutionally impermissible." The folks from GamePolitics note that similar bans are already in place in Boston, Portland, and Oregon. It can be noted that a series of adverts for GTA: Vice City Stories that prompted a call for restrictions on advertising. It seems that at the end of the day, the game may be violent as hell, but the advertisement isn't. Do you see folks banning R rated movie ads? |

As the saying goes, you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. Well after the day we've had here at QJ Central, I hope everyone's hungry, because we've got breakfast for all ... as long as you don't mind your eggs scrambled. So what's the dish? As many of you might've known already, QJ.NET keeps growing and coming into its own with each passing day. As we grow, so does our audience (hey, that's you!). For some time now, the site has been dragging its feet, and we practically have to get out and push it to your browsers sometimes. That's no fun for you, and we're tired of having to buy new shoes. Today we saw the first (of two) changes to our server structure, including a new addition. But like a little boy on Christmas morning, that brand new bike doesn't put itself together, and Santa isn't always the greatest when it comes to reading the French instructions. The short of it is that things didn't go as planned, and we should've taken the proper precautions and made offerings to the server gods... may thine bandwidth bless thee and keep thee free from lag. Everything seems to be in order now, and hopefully the change in loading speed has been noticed (if you can tell, let us know in the comments - we could use the affirmation right about now). We apologize for the huge, unanticipated outage today, but now that you're surfing the site a bit faster, hopefully you'll forgive us. And there should be another dramatic boost to speed by the beginning of next week as we make another change to our setup. This will result in a few hours of downtime for DL.QJ.NET, but like Santa, the plan is for us to sneak in while most of you are asleep, so leave out some cookies. Both DL.QJ and the front pages will benefit from this shakeup, but the front pages should remain unaffected as far as downtime is concerned. Thanks for sticking with us and being patient! Now who's up for some spicy Denver Omelettes? |
