Video: iPhone controls car in real time using a concept web app - Image 1 Not only can you connect with people using your iPhone but it seems that you can also do the same with cars with Delphi's concept web application. Via Gizmodo, we were able to see a video that showed a car being controlled by an iPhone in real time.

Theseis - Image 1

Updates about Track 7's adventure game Theseis (PC, Xbox 360) aren't really trickling down like raindrops on a cloudy and rainy day, so when we found out that Adventure Advocate had a sit-down with the Track 7 folks, we pounced on the chance to dish out what's up with the game straight from the devs themselves.

As always, the interview was laden with personal stuff, so with that, we'll be focusing more on the tidbits about Theseis. The devs who talked with Adventure Advocate were Dimitris Papadopoulos - Advertising Manager of Theseis, worldwide; Nektarios Xionis - Concept Artist / Script Writer; Kostas Giatilis – Animator / Script Writer; Michael Georgopoulos - Programmer; and Giannis Tsiombikas - Programmer.

When asked how far into the game have they finished and what are the problems they encountered during development, they said that after two years of work, they are now in the final stage of the game's completion. They also exposed that they have no problems with manpower but there has been a change in the game's story which led to a minor delay.

Aside from that, they also clarified that the game won't be in Greek. The Track 7 devs said that "what you have seen in the trailer was in ancient Greek and it was used to show the past and the true nature of Theseis. Since the game takes place in modern Greece, we will see shops, locations as Monastiraki, and names that will be in Greek. Moreover, we will have Greek subtitles. There is also the possibility of localization in some other languages."

xnaWhile this needs no further explanation, we deemed it necessary to give you a rundown of how the XNA Studio Homebrew actually works. After all, Chris Satchell, the Microsoft GM for Game Developer's Group, mentioned that their company wants to encourage fans to make games.

Actually, the whole process can be summarized into just ten items. Of course you have to begin with getting the necessary tools and softwares. You will be needing C# Express, the XNA Game Studio Express and the XNA Framework. That's three items and that's three steps already. Seven more to go!

Before we proceed, please take note that C# Express is the foundation of it all, so install this first. XNA Game Studio, on the other hand, will just add new features to your C# environment. The framework allows for testing and running the game on your PC. All the above mentioned can be found on MSDN's official page.

Next is of course, to learn the basics. C# is an object-oriented programming language based on C++ that includes aspects of several other programming languages including Delphi, Visual Basic, and Java. It was actually developed by Microsoft as part of their .NET initiative.

Now, we all know that XNA is for the public. Then, it is needless to say that there a tons of programs out there that you can view or use as an example. Online sites like XNASpot could be a good place to start. Once you're quite familiar with the codes and how the program works, you are now ready to actually learn XNA. Web sites such as XNATutorial gives a pretty good step by step process of that.

After all these, the next step is actually an old adage: Practice makes perfect. Learn more XNA, practice it, know it by heart. Over the internet, game-making tutorials in the form of podcasts and screen casts can be found (it's also a good way to practice your research skills). From here on, you are pretty much on your own. Now that you have the materials, know what kind of games do you want to create. Study different codes and compare them from each other. This way, you'll know how a specific type of game is done.

Lastly, comb your hair, put on your nicest suit, and join the Creators Club. Easy enough? Well, we didn't say making a game is fast. We said it was simple. So you better get started now. We'll see you when you get to the club, okay?

SmallNethost GUI

Three days ago, we featured an article about homebrew developer lame's creation, SmallNethostGui. Contrary to his forum handle, this app is something really useful. Take it from some people who comment on that earlier article. Basically, the app houses a USBHost and a NEThost. And lame recently stopped by our forums to share version 0.2.1 of his app.

According to lame "nethostfs.exe is a tool to open your pc folders over (and for) the network (like usbhostfs.exe do it over usb) for the PSP (and others i think). With the right app, like irShell 2.x, you can access the opened folders. Best example is to stream your pmp files to the integrated PMP AVC player from irShell 2.2 over wifi."

As to how to use it, you could refer to that earlier article for the usage, options, and shortcut buttons tidbits. The dev was kind enough to provide two packages to choose from - you could download the Full package which includes the GUI, readme, usbhostfs, and nethostfs; or you could opt to get the Lite package which only has the GUI and readme. Whichever package you decide to get, you'd have to do some reading. Here's the changelog:

v0.2.1 (29-11-2006)
  • *NEW*       "/cygdrive" option to open all the folders for PSP
  • *CHANGED*   nethostfs path back to Windows format (seems to have better compatibility)
  • *IMPROVED*  Internal coding
  • *ADDED*     nethostfs.exe/usbhostfs.exe/dll's/readme to the package
V0.2   (26-11-2006)
  • *NEW*       Values are stored in an ini file, not in the registry
  • *NEW*       ported to Delphi, no need of NET2.0
  • *NEW*       GUI functions for usbhostfs included
  • *IMPROVED*  Port Handling, no need to activate it manually
  • *REMOVED* " runas" functionality (no need for)

XM RadioXM Satellite Radio recently announced that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued new grants of authority for three XM radios with FM transmitters, indicating that the radios are now in full compliance with FCC regulations.

These XM plug-and-play radios -- Audiovox Xpress, Delphi RoadyXT, and XM Sportscaster -- are three of XM's primary products at retail. Manufacturers can now resume production of these devices. The new receivers are expected to make it into retail in time for the holiday shopping season.

G5 coolantStories similar to this one have been appearing all over the 'Net, recently:

"We have six G5’s all ranging from Dual 1.8’s to a Quad G5. Came in to work today and my computer, a Dual 2.5, wouldn’t turn on. It would click on for about a third of a second and turn back off. Thought the power supply went on it. It was only a year and a half old. Disconnected everything and put it on the floor to try a different plug. I tipped the machine up to show a co-worker when another co-worker spotted liquid coming from the rear of the computer. NO WAY!! It was fine on Friday and untouched all weekend.”

Is Apple's much-touted liquid-cooling system defective?

The bad news appears to be yes - but the good news is that only a very few machines of a specific model seem to be affected. Apparently, the first 2.5 Ghz G5 models shipped with a Delphi radiator that had design problems. Apple seems to have been aware of the problem, because they delayed shipment for three months after the introduction of the new machine. Unfortunately, some units of the 2.5 Ghz models "slipped through the cracks."

If you have one of the first of this particular model, you first purchase an AppleCare policy immediately, as this repair could easily run $1,000 if your machine is out of warranty. Next, remove the side metal panel and inspect the bottom of the housing periodically. If you see something that looks like anti-freeze, use rubber gloves to clean (the fluid is HIGHLY toxic) and get your machine serviced immediately.
