PSP homebrew developer Zx-81 is at it once more, and he's bringing us some sweet, sweet retro action on the go with his latest version of PSPColem, the ColecoVision emulator for the Sony PlayStation Portable. This update brings the PSP homebrew emulator to version 1.1.0.Armed with a number of improvements, this updated version now also has a neat feature of saving and displaying thumbnails for each of your save states. Handy, for those of us who like to save multiple times, like just before a boss fight or the point of a game where you broke your own best score. Let's take a gander at the changelog and see what's new from the last version. What's new in version 1.1.0:

Zx-81 has released version 1.0.9 of PSPColem. The new version runs on custom firmwares 3.x and the PSP Slim & Lite. For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it's a port for the program ColEm, an emulator for the ColecoVision video game system whose more famous games include the all-time favorite gorilla Donkey Kong.As always, users are encouraged to take a look at the readme file included in the file before using the application. The installation instructions and other important notes are in the readme, so be sure to check it. Homebrew developer Zx-81 has also provided the source code, which is also available for download below. Here's the changelog for PSPColem version 1.0.9:

If games such as Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, BurgerTime, Frogger, River Raid, and Zaxxon make you want to relive the good old days you spent with the ColecoVision, then you're in luck. Uberjack has just6 released ColEm v2.2.2, a version that fixes the buffer overflow error affecting units without
a battery.
For those unfamiliar with this emulator, it is a port of the ColEm emulator for the Sony PlayStation Portable platform. It's written in C and uses GU (Graphical Utility toolkit) for rendering. If you plan on using this, keep in mind that that system ROMs must reside in the same folder as EBOOT.PBP file. However, game ROMs can be placed anywhere like in the previous version. Now for a load of "ifs". If you decide to change the button configuration, remember that changes are not retained after a mapping is modified. If you want to save the changes be sure to press circle after the controls have been configured. If you're using an older build of this, it may not be necessary to upgrade to this version unless you use your PSP without the battery (i.e. when connected to the AC). Installation, like its earlier versions, is basic drag and drop. Copy the game folder(s) from the download and paste it in the root of your PSP's memory stick. Download: ColEm v2.2.2 |

PlayStation Portable owners who want to play classic ColecoVision games on their handhelds turn to emulator PSPColem. Even though the said program is already great as seen in its latest version, it's always good to have an alternative. That's why we're presenting to you another ColecoVision emulator known as ColEM-PSP. Even though this is the first public release, ColEM-PSP currently stands at version 2.2.1 and is already looking impressive. It was created by homebrew developer uberjack - the same guy who provided the community with the emulator for Microsoft MSX computer architecture, fMSX-PSP. ColEM-PSP currently comes with a default key mappings which you can edit and replace to your convenience. You can learn about in the Readme file. It also has a feature known as Virtual Keypad that provides extra controls functionality. Take note that the emulator supports cartridge loading from ZIP files, meaning game ROMS may be placed anywhere. Download: ColEM-PSP v2.2.1 |

We found this little gadget in BenHeck's website and discovered that it's called Gameport. Essentially, it's a portable emulator that can run Atari 2600 and Colecovision games for the moment. With software upgrades, games from other platforms can also be played. As of now, this is only at the working design stage. The shell measures 3.5" x 5" x 1" at the moment but will probably be smaller when the finished product comes out. There's obviously no slot for cartridges, meaning you'll have to load games via USB data transfer. It sounds like a nice idea and we'd love to see what it can do by the time it's done. Details are pretty scarce at the moment but you can email the people making it at sales@gameport.tv to ask direct questions. |

If you've been checking out a lot of the recent emulator releases, you may have noticed a commonality among them. Gelon's been making icons and backgrounds for the different emulators, such as for the Atari 2600 and the Commodore Plus emulators. Zx-81 talked Gelon into doing something extra special for the emulator fans out there, and so we now can benefit from a downloadable icon pack for those emulators. Gelon's Icons Pack features icons for the following emulators:

Months have already passed and the year has already turned over to 2007, and yet the past is still catching up with us. The ColecoVision gaming console of prehistoric era (circa 1982) is still very much alive despite popular belief.
Zx-81 is back after a temporary hiatus from the homebrew community and has now released an update of his homebrew emulator, thus pitching it up to PSPColEm v1.0.7. Here's the full changelog:
All you ever need to know is on the readme file and sources are even included in the archive. Zx releases this under the GNU public license - you can check the copying.txt for more info on that. Finally, we'd like to get the attention of PSP newbies who got PSPs for Christmas: Welcome to the PSP community! Check out the FAQs, Guides, and Tutorials at our forums. You might want to take a close look at the Guides: General PSP for general PSP stuff (like figuring out the version of "firmware" you have in your PSP), and then you can get into homebrew by reading the threads in the Guides: Hacks, Homebrew and Emulators forum. Recommended reading includes the ULTIMATE Homebrew Guide and the The Ultimate QJ Guide. Download: [PSPColEm v1.0.7] |
