ndsIf your copy of Beup Live v.03, the homebrew app by kevinc and HtheB that runs an MSN-like instant messaging application for the DS, seems to have stopped working, it's not your DS. According to kevinc, Microsoft changed its server and as a result Beup Live v0.3 hangs at "doing handshake" part. Well, the much awaited bug fix to Beup Live v.03 is here. So this should take care of that issue.

Meanwhile if you're new to Beup Live, it is, as we said earlier, an instant messenger. Since its first version, the app has gone through a lot of great changes including:
  • Selectable avatars
  • Shows date of last message
  • Emoticons on display names / text
  • Option to auto connect
  • Stand by when lid is closed
  • Scrollable text in chat tabs
To run Beup Live, place the files in the root directory of your card (it supports SD, Mini SD, and CF). It will have some default icons and avatars. Don't forget to watch the demo video for more info.

DS-X ProductShaunj66 of GBATemp had the honor of being the first person to publish a review of the DS-Xtreme. The DS-Xtreme is redefining the flashcart world with all of its user-friendly features, interface and design. This device will eliminate all mention of NDS homebrew being "hard to figure out", and will become the easiest way to run homebrew! We have already been lucky enough to receive our DS-X and will be posting up a full QJ.net review of the product tomorrow! Meanwhile, you can look at the homebrew compatibility list provided by Shaunj66 on the DS-Xtreme -

Instead of showing you a screenshot, here's something better! A video! That's Beup working, and now HtheB and kevinc have taken it up to Beup Live v0.3 Final! And since we all know that it's an MSN-type of homebrew, it still has that Windows Live Messenger 8.0 look to it.

Anyways, here's what's new:
  • option to login automatically if Beup connection is lost to the server
  • option to login automatically if Beup has a SSL failed message
Those features are demonstrated in the video too, along with a live demo of the chat: typing, emoticons, etc. And just so you know, it can also support SD, Mini SD, and CF cards!

Now we see how far it's gone since its first appearance in the homebrew community. And so much has changed since the original version. This is one clear example of how great all of you homebrew programmers are! Throughout the life of Beup, lots and lots of features have been changed and appended, and now we get the "Final." Or is it? We don't think anyone would mind if HtheB and kevinc would improve their MSN-homebrew to further stages. And with their progress, who knows how far they can take this?

Thanks to badam for the tip!

Glider - Image 1 Glider - Image 2

HtheB (the guy who helps kevinc debug his Beup app) together with his homebrew-developing friends - DarkGilson and Tassu">Tassu - has presented a homebrew game called Glider for the Nintendo DS. If you're thinking that this is another entry to the Neo Summer Coding Contest, you're right, we have another one at our midst.

From the name itself, you know that the game will involve high-flying acts in a plane or something that flies. Glider is basically a 3D glider simulator which enables you to fly through the air in the video game world. You move your glider around by using your
stylus. As of now, the fly mode is the only available thing, the training part is nothing different from the fly mode...for now. Let's see what this trio has up their sleeves.

After making Beup v0.2a look more like MSN Messenger, HtheB has released Beup v0.2b to keep up with the changes in Microsoft's freeware instant messaging - appearance-wise, that is. With the new version, the MSN-like instant messaging application for the DS now sports the Windows Live Messenger 8.0 theme. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) was released on June 19, 2006, replacing MSN Messenger. Together with the name change, WLM offers loads of new features, including offline message sending and contact name customization.

Okay, I gave that WLM background to help you appreciate HtheB's new theme enhancement for the Beup v0.2b. I must admit, the application looks better with the new WLM theme.

beup 0.2aThere have been attempts to create an MSN-like instant messaging application for the DS and some of them have find their way through homebrew forums. One application that showed promise when it was released in June was Beup 0.2 created by kevinc. Since its release, kevinc's been ironing out its kinks and has offered several quick bug fixes to make sure users get the MSN instant messaging experience on their DS. It didn't take too long for equally talented HtheB to release Beup 0.2a, a modified version of kevinc's superb application.

The moded Beup retains all the good stuff in the first version, but it's now more like MSN Messenger with the addition of original MSN avatars. You'd also notice that the skin has been changed. With the new version, Beup is beginning to morph into a suitable replacement to MSN Messenger.
