Sins of a Solar Empire Beta: The all-purpose ship strike package - Image 1

Stardock and Ironclad Games' Sins of a Solar Empire is a game that should appeal to fans of the 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) genre. While I'm not much a fan of the first two X's in that list, the whole exploit and exterminate appealed to the gamer in me. Hey, you can't go wrong with a game that has the word "exterminate" in its game description right?

In the previous Sins of a Solar Empire Beta Diaries on QJ.NET, both Sally and Charles mentioned that the game was easy. I'd like it to go on record that I only agree with them to a certain degree. Getting into the game is easy enough, and the tutorial proved to be very helpful. However, once you get into the meat and bones of the game, players will find a pretty deep and complicated interplay between the different units.

Suffice to say, I'm not going to go over the technical aspects or basic gameplay of the game. The way I see it, if you have a computer that can run Sins of a Solar Empire and you take the time to play through the tutorial, you should be all set and ready to focus your efforts towards becoming a good player. Over the course of these Beta Diaries, I hope to discuss the different tactics and strategies that players can employ in their bid for galactic domination.

The Sins of a Solar Empire Beta Diary 3 can be found in the full article.

Battlestations: Midway for Xbox 360 - Image 1Now up on Xbox Live is the Iowa Mission Pack for Eidos Interactive's Battlestations: Midway. Finally, after themes and pin-ups, we get to see some more World War II shooting action. Not that we have any complaints about them pin-up girls.

Anyhow, the Iowa Mission Pack is available for 400 points, so that shouldn't weigh so much on your Microsoft pockets. As promised earlier, this mission pack will be including new stuff, like the multiplayer map for the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, as well as the single player challenge mission, Raid on Truk. Also, you will find here five new exclusive units in the form of the USS Iowa battleship, P-38 Lightning (Allied) and Gekko (Japanese) fighters, the IJN Shimakaze Destroyer, and the new Japanese mini-sub.

The Iowa Mission Pack for Battlestations: Midway will not, however, be available in Japan's list of Xbox 360 games. But as for the rest of you guys, it's all good.

Tabula Rasa Caption Contest - Image 1

The votes are in for the Tabula Rasa Caption contest and the winners have been announced. Recruits Avenger, DeadRinger, Soulie, and Zyphre were listed as the four winners of the PlanetTR Contest.

We showed the finalists for the contest a few days back and a couple of favorites made it to the winners' list. The screen of three guys playing Battleship was especially stitch inducing, though we were crushed when we found that the pedicure shot didn't make it. Anyway, the winners are to be given Beta spots. Here's the announcement from Firelotus:

Congratulations recruits, have your duffel bags packed and be ready, you are part of the newest wave of AFS soldiers to be called to the Front Line. Please PM your Commanding Officer (FireLotus) with your forum name, preferred email Address and your PlayNC account name so that information can be forwarded to CCO April "CuppaJo" Burba.

That's it folks. You can check out the rest of the winners by clicking the Full Article link below. Enjoy!

Battlestations: Midway

Eidos Interactive today confirmed that Battlestations: Midway will not be released on Xbox 360 and PC until some time in 2007. The game was originally supposed to ship before the end of the year and no official release date has been set as of yet. For those that have not heard anything about the game, it will let you have massive air, sea and underwater WWII battles in a unique mix of intense action and tactical gameplay.

You will have the ability to control dozens of water based naval ships such as submarines and battleships as well as air crafts to get your flying fix. So for the most part it looks like there will be three different types of gameplay, two water based and one air based.

Battlestations: Midway's story follows naval recruit Henry Walker, whose first assignment is as a gunner at Pearl Harbor--the starting point of an incredible career at the heart of the US Pacific Fleet in 1942, in what was to become one of the most inspirational military campaigns in history. So for those of you out there that have been waiting for a new naval game be on the look out and when more news becomes available we'll be sure to keep you informed.

WiFi Blubb ScreenshotToday, the entries for the NDSHB WiFi Competition were revealed and released. The host of the competition claimed that the competition did not go as well with the minuscule amount of entries, but these entries are worthy of the top homebrew applications for the NDS.

Qw3rty entered the competition with a WiFi game entitled: WiFi Blubb. This game is a battleship clone in which you will play against players over the internet. This game however takes a radical new turn that is not seen in battleship games today. This battleship clones allow you to move your battleships while you are playing the game. This adds a more realistic feel to the game, since moving when getting shot at is usually your best bet to survive.
