vaio arNot too long ago, we reported an ad sighting for a Sony VAIO AR11S HD-Ready laptop saying that said laptop was up for pre-order in the UK. Now, it's time to mark your calendars - the Sony VAIO AR Premium is up and ready to hit retail shops next week. The VAIO AR Premium has a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive for playing movies and recording video in high definition. Not to be eclipsed by the Blu-ray drive are the notebook's Intel Core Duo processor and 1GB of memory.

The 17-inch VAIO AR is priced at $3,500 and will be packed with a complimentary copy of the movie "House of Flying Daggers" in the Blu-ray format. Those who are not yet ready to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon can opt for the VAIO AR with DVD burner for $1,800.

The launch of the VAIO AR Premium marks Sony's commercial push into the high-definition disc arena. By month's end, the company will release the RC300 multimedia desktop that will also come equipped with (you guessed it!) a Blu-ray drive.

Sony is taking preorders for the VAIO AR Premium on its site.
