But it runs on the Frostbite 2.0 engine!
If there’s one thing we learned from 2011, it’s that people will buy pretty much anything as long as it’s a first-person shooter. And since DICE isn’t likely to release another Battlefield title this year, somebody is going to have to stand up and take a (very small) bite out of Black Ops 2. That somebody appears to be Danger Close, and their strategy appears to be Medal of Honor.
The next Medal of Honor, subtitled Warfighter (creative), will hit shelves in October. The game is being built with DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 game engine—the very same one that powers the exceptionally pretty Battlefield 3. DICE, however, will not be involved in development; Danger Close has elected to build the entire game in-studio.
EA is planning to drop more details on the game at GDC in a couple of weeks. For now, we’ll just have to be satisfied with the promise of yet another brownish FPS.
Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime—do you prefer Medal of Honor over CoD or Battlefield?

Rollerblades, spray-paint and one of the best game soundtracks of all time are headed your way.
If you were one of the lucky folks that got your hands on a Dreamcast before the console imploded and took Sega down with it, you probably had a copy of Jet Set Radio. If not, here’s a quick breakdown: you rollerblade around a city and spray-paint things as you go. That’s about it, but for some reason it’s awesome.
If you never had a chance to play Jet Set Radio, today is your lucky day. Sega has just announced that the game will be making its long-awaited comeback sometime in 2012, in the form of a downloadable title on both PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.
It’s been 12 years since the original title hit shelves, so it will be interesting to see how the game holds up. No information is available on an exact release date, a price or whether the company will be making improvements to the game.
Would you like to see Jet Set Radio HD? Or a straight port of the original?

The world’s favorite blue blur returns to Android.
Hey Android users! Have you conquered the many challenges offered by Sonic 4, Episode I? Need another speed fix before you start charging down your neighborhood streets looking for golden rings? Sega has you covered.
The company has just confirmed that Sonic 4 Episode II is nearly ready for its Android debut. The game should show up in the Android Marketplace sometime this spring, though the exact date is still floating in the ether.
However, if you just have to get a taste of the game right now, you can watch this trailer:
Oh, I’m not an Android user but this sounds important: Sonic 4 Episode II will be coming to both dual-core and quad-core Tegra-based systems. Sega didn’t provide any information on whether this exclusivity will remain, or if the game will eventually bounce to all Android devices.
Make of that what you will. Ready for another go-round with the blue blaze?

One random source does not a story make.
The gaming internet exploded earlier today with rumors that Blizzard, creator of World of Warcraft and Diablo, had a top-secret free-to-play project in the works. This news scoop came courtesy of Develop, a gaming news site that apparently has the inside dope on what’s going on over at Blizzard HQ. Naturally, the rumor quickly spun into a firestorm.
Here’s the problem—no one stopped to ask Blizzard. And when someone (GameSpot) finally got around to doing it, the company simply said, “Yeah, we’re working on a F2P game. It’s called Blizzard DOTA, and we announced it at BlizzCon.”
So, by all accounts, this looks like another case of the gaming press putting the cart before the horse. Blizzard is indeed working on a F2P game – it’s been confirmed that DOTA will run on a microtransaction model – but there’s nothing particularly “top secret” about it.
Nothing to see here, folks. Move along!
Unless, of course, the response from Blizz was all a clever ruse…
What do you think Blizz is up to?

Square Enix brings its beloved turn-based strategy game to the iPad, but at a steep price.
You may remember a few months ago when Square Enix brought Final Fantasy Tactics to the iPhone, and said that an iPad version would follow shortly afterward. It turns out that in Square Enix’s world, “shortly afterward” means “in about six months.” Whatever the reason, the game is finally here.
Final Fantasy Tactics for iPad resolves some of the main issues with the iPhone version, such as play speed and sensitive touch controls. The game has also received a minor graphical upgrade—emphasis on the minor. Of course, Final Fantasy Tactics is 15 years old, so it’s sort of expected that it will look a bit dated, even on the iPad.
If you’re a fan of the franchise or the Tactics series, you can pick up Final Fantasy Tactics on the iTunes Store for – seriously - $17.99. Not sure why exactly Square Enix thinks its games deserve such a higher price than pretty much every other game on the market, but there you have it.
Would you pay nearly $20 for an iPad game, even an admittedly very good one?

The retail analysis company adds Wal-Mart’s data to its information coffers, which will help it to provide more accurate sales reports.
Have you ever heard of the NPD Group? If not, here’s a quick primer: The NPD Group is an analysis company that interprets data from over 900 different retailers and uses that information to create reports outlining the sales of games. With over 150,000 locations reporting in, the NPD Group usually has a pretty good idea of what people are buying.
With one huge exception – until now, the NPD Group did not analyze sales information from the megastore, Wal-Mart. And as much as hardcore gamers would like to say otherwise, Wal-Mart makes up a huge portion of the retail games market – 25-30 percent, in fact. With Wal-Mart’s data on tap, the NPD Group can now capture an estimated 80 percent of all domestic game sales, and thus provide much more accurate sale information.
Here’s why I think this is so interesting – Wal-Mart game sales are notorious for leaning towards the casual side of gaming. People that aren’t “gamers” don’t go to game stores; they go to Wal-Mart or another huge megastore. And the information provided by Wal-Mart could just show some unexpected trends in the industry.
We’ll have to wait for the next NPD report to see if Wal-Mart’s numbers present any surprises, but at the very minimum, the analyses can be relied upon to be more accurate than ever.
Where do you buy your games? I’m fond of Target myself; no one tries to get me to subscribe to magazines there.

Is Anonymous in the right by taking out websites in response to government actions?
This last week has certainly been interesting in terms of anti-piracy events. While the controversial SOPA and PIPA bills have been effectively shelved, the U.S. government still took a major bite out of online file sharing by shutting down Megaupload.com. If you’ve never heard of the site, Megaupload was a notorious cache of pirated material, a place where downloaders could access movies, music and television shows free of charge.
Anonymous, that volatile pocket of the web known for mass action, did not take kindly to the removal of Megaupload from the web. In fact, the organization (if you can call it that) went on a booming offensive, deleting CBS.com, toppling the U.S. Department of Justice website and shutting down the FTC’s online presence. It was a massive effort on the part of Anons, one that they have promised to continue.
But one has to wonder if hacking websites or shutting them down via DDOS attacks is a valid form of protest. Sure, it makes your point, but it also infringes on the rights of every person that depends on those websites for information or entertainment.
So today’s sound off begs this simple question: Do you think hacking-type protests are an appropriate response to disagreeable government actions?

We want to know which games you still hear in your head.
When it comes to game design, the importance of music absolutely cannot be overlooked. Music brings us into the environment, manipulates our moods and sticks with us long after the game has been turned off. Great games with bad music aren’t great games at all, and an amazing score may be the most memorable thing about an otherwise shoddy title.
When you think back on your long history of gaming, surely there are a few songs that stand out. Upon first glance, I can remember most of the music in Ninja Gaiden II, Mega Man II, various Mario titles and pretty much every Zelda game ever made. And if you asked me to pick one game that I thought had the best soundtrack ever, my answer would be The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Every piece of music in Wind Waker, from the epic overworld theme to the slightly altered Ocarina of Time themes present on each of the game’s tiny islands, is an absolute joy. I find myself humming tunes from that game at random, simply because they had such an impact on me.
So what’s your favorite game soundtrack? Something retro? Something new? Sound off!

Scribblenauts Developer "Retail Model is broken"
But if you type in F-I-X, that'll fix it right?
If you haven't played a Scribblenauts game, go out and get it right now. It's beautifully handled, fun, creative available on your iPhoen or DS and it's fanatastic...but...you know, maybe don't pay the full price. The game's creative director, Jeremiah Slaczka has come forward saying that the rising prices for a video game budget are making the usual $60 price tag for US Games, untenable for most developers.
Slaczka said in an interview with Game Informer that the recent console generation, dev costs are low enough to allow games that don't sell too well to make money, but now with more being spent on graphics and design, games have to sell into the millions to make sure they get back everything they paid for.  Slaczka calls it insane saying that if you aren't going to make a "mega hit at $60" you may as well give up before you start, because it's a lot of money just being wasted.
Slaczka...is a really hard name to type repeatedly and leaves for a stale story so let's just refer to him as Slazzie. Slazzie says that if a game doesn't sell for $60, that at a reduced price, it shouldn't be sold at all, with the current business model. Slazzie used Homefront as an example in the interview claiming that THQ said that the game didn't meet the sales projections not because it was terrible but because the competition at the full price was too fierce.
"As a consumer, why would I want to play an okay FPS when I can play a bunch of great FPS titles for the same price? And that's what the consumers did," Slazzie said, but also noted that with the shortness of the game and people still renting titles, "what if Homefront was only $30 dollars upfront for the single player and if you liked it you could buy the multiplayer for an additional $30?"
Whilst I honestly think this is ridiculous considering that in my country you pay $100 for a game at retail price, if you're lucky and even then I know with Slazzie's business model that we'd be charged $50 for the single player for CoD then another $50 for their multiplayer, oh and another $64.95 for CoD Elite. Slazzie may be right for US prices, but the ripple effect would be devestating overseas...for those of us who still purchase games.

The pre-order exclusives for Final Fantasy XIII-2 just keep on coming, with Square Enix and GameStop announcing yet another bonus for pre-order customers.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is supposed to be everything that Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t, but we won’t know if Square Enix has succeeded at that until later next year. In the meantime, all we have to go on are the pre-order bonuses that keep cropping up all over the place, with everything from boss fights to bonus weapons being mentioned depending on where you choose to buy.
GameStop already has the exclusive costume for Serah, but it looks like they realized that Amazon has the drop on them with the Omega boss battle, so they’re upping the ante with this weapon:
The Genji Bow takes the form of either a bow or sword (duh) and allows you to attack more frequently, whatever that means. Not sure if it refills your ATB gauge faster or gives you a haste bonus, but it’s an in-combat boost either way. Here’s the catch though: the Genji Bow is only available to PowerUP Rewards members that pre-order the game; regular pre-orders will not receive anything besides the costume.
The bonus item is retroactive – if you’ve already pre-ordered and you’re a member, you’ll automatically receive it with your copy of FFXIII-2.
Pre-order bonuses mostly serve to make games review-proof by encouraging people to buy things before they read about them or try them, but we’re starting to see bonuses splintered into more and more specific tiers.
What do you think about offering a reward only to special sections of your customer base?

Bethesda offered free games for life to any parents willing to name their kid Dovahkiin, and one pair of passionate fans went ahead and did it.
What’s in a name, right?  A few weeks ago, Bethesda made an interesting offer to fans – name your child Dovahkiin, which apparently means dragonborn in Skyrim’s pretend language, and the company will give you every game they make, for the rest of your life, completely free. It sound’s a like a devil’s bargain, but I suppose there are worse names in the world. Apple comes to mind.
Eric and Megan Kellermeyer named their kid Dovahkiin Tom Kellermyer, and since I have no idea how to pronounce “Dovahkiin” I can’t tell if the name has a ring to it or not.
The baby was born on the same day of Skyrim’s release (11/11/11) and the Kellermeyers contacted Bethesda, who was more than happy to make good on their promise. Happy, and probably a little surprised. The offer they made seemed almost like a joke, so it’s nice to see that they’re following through on it.
In the meantime, the young Dovahkiin can look forward to a lifetime of teachers and professors being able to make heads or tails of his name at roll call. Congratulations to the Kellermeyers!
And Dovahkiin, if you’re reading this twenty years from now, we’re all really sorry about this.

If you though Europe was going to get all of the good stuff, this announcement should warm your Final Fantasy-loving heart.
We heard last month that Final Fantasy XII-2 would be getting a pretty cool collector’s edition when released in the European market, but Square Enix was quiet about whether fans in the States could expect to see something similar.
Well, the wait is over. Here is your Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition:
And if you’re one of the people that decides to upgrade your game to the CE, here’s what you can expect to find:
“Premium” packaging with art by Yoshitaka Amano
4-disc game soundtrack
Concept art book
It’s not really a massive collector’s edition compared to some of the craziness we’ve seen lately, but it is priced at a much more comfortable $79.99. That’s only $20 more than usual, as opposed to Skyrim’s insane price doubling.
You can order the CE from Amazon or at Best Buy or GameStop, with different bonuses depending on where you go. GameStop orders receive a costume for Serah, Amazon customers get the Omega fight, and Best Buy orders get a prequel novel. I’d say Amazon has the edge here.
What would you like to see added to the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition?
