Adios, World of Warcraft Game Masters!
World of Warcraft is still the industry’s leading paid MMO, but the title has been steadily losing subscribers for the better part of two years. Though the holiday season treated WoW well (the MMO lost only 100,000 players), it’s clear that Blizzard needs to do some serious re-shuffling in order to keep the game profitable for the long term.
And re-shuffling is exactly what the company plans to do. Blizzard has just announced that it is laying off 600 employees, most of which work in customer support. According to the company, 90 percent of the layoffs are occurring in non-development departments of the company. 600 is no small sum—it represents a pretty large chunk of Blizzard-Activision’s total employee number of around 7,300.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the topic:
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.”
In the face of these layoffs, there is still hope for aspiring developers. Blizzard is currently recruiting dev talent for some of its upcoming titles. And the layoffs don’t necessarily mean that Blizz is in financial trouble, just that World of Warcraft is no longer the money-printing machine it once was.
Do you still play WoW? Have you ever interacted with the game’s support staff?

Deal with it, Brazil.
If you tuned in for Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct broadcast this morning, you were treated to yet another incredibly boring video with a few spread out game trailers. However, if you managed to stick through the thing until close to the end, you’re also aware of what we’re about to reveal here on the site: Mistwalker’s insanely popular RPG, The Last Story, is headed to North America.
The game, which was published by Nintendo in Europe and Japan, will be distributed by XSEED Games. There’s no official release date as of yet; all we know is that you can expect to see the game sometime in 2012. This is the second good bit of news for Nintendo fans, following the Xenoblade Chronicles release date announcement earlier today.
If you didn’t watch the Nintendo Direct broadcast, you can watch it below for information on Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Fatal Frame and – gasp! – Mario Tennis:

A group of BF3 cheaters has a bone to pick with Punkbuster, and they’re doing it at the expense of regular joes.
The beating heart of Battlefield 3 is its intense online multiplayer. And whenever you have online multiplayer in a game, you have to find a way to protect it from cheaters. On PC versions of the game, this function is performed by software known as Punkbuster.
Punkbuster is an automated program that analyzes every player on a particular server and looks for known cheats and other exploits. If it catches someone in the act, they are immediately banned from EA’s Battlelog service. According to Kotaku, some of these cheaters are unhappy with the way Punkbuster affects their game, and have elected to take their frustrations out on the regular BF3 populace.
It seems that somehow, these players have managed to compromise Punkbuster on certain servers, and are using the service to ban innocent players. The group claims to have dumped over 150 players to date, and the official BF3 forums are awash in complaints of unwarranted bans. Essentially, this small selection of players has chosen to protest Punkbuster by using it against non-cheating individuals.
Posting to a bots and exploits forum, one user had this to say about Punkbuster:
“We are bringing back the unerring of punkbuster back for a 3rd season. We have selected ggc-stream as the target since they have the most streaming bf3 servers and makes it very easy to add fake bans. In 2011 we hit them with a mass ban wave and now were are banning real players from battlelog while ggc-stream is totally unaware. We have framed 150+ bf3 players alone.”
This story is still developing, and there’s been no official word from either DICE or Punkbuster on what may be going on, so the news should be taken with a grain of salt. Look for future updates as information is made available.
What do you think of Punkbuster?

5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

One sharp-witted Xbox Live user tracked down her hacked account, and in the process revealed that the problem may be bigger than Microsoft is letting on.
The Xbox Live hacking scandal has been rolling through games media for the last few weeks, with Microsoft continually confirming that everything is under control, and users continually confirming the opposite. Today we have the latest bit of news from the debacle, one that indicates the problem being way outside of Microsoft’s ability to manage.
Here’s the breakdown: A gamer had her Live account compromised. The account was then used to purchase thousands of MP against her wishes, so she contacted Microsoft and let them know what was happening. Microsoft said the account would be suspended, but when she turned on her system it auto-logged into the account. Microsoft’s response? They said they were “unable” to lock the account. What?!
After a little bit of sleuthing through her friends list and messages, she discovered that her account had been sold to another user via an illicit website. This site currently has around 1,900 hacked Xbox Live accounts up for sale, with prices that start around $20. There’s still no information on how exactly accounts are being hacked, but the discovery does help show what happens after the hack has been completed:
Thief uses stolen account to buy Xbox Live Family Pack
Thief attaches new account to Xbox Live Family Pack
Thief transfers points from stolen account to new accounts
Thief sells new accounts at auction
Microsoft is continuing to deny that the issue lies in Xbox Live, and EA has naturally said the same thing about their security measures. However, it’s hard to believe that this many players would just suddenly fall victim to phishing attacks.
What do you think is going on with Xbox Live? Microsoft cover-up or user error?

Gamer scores 144 kills and 4 deaths in one MW3 match, and in the process demonstrates one of the game’s biggest problems.
Look, it’s 2012. Spawn trapping – the act of locking an opposing team into one spawn area and mercilessly camping them – simply shouldn’t be possible in games anymore. Developers, by now, should know how to circumvent this problem. However, the issue seems to have slipped the mind of devs over at Infinity Ward, as evidenced by this video:
In the clip, one MW3 player, with the help of his team, manages to summon a M.O.A.B. in just 48 seconds by peeking over a wall into the enemy spawn and absolutely wrecking the other team as they respawn helplessly. It’s a cheap tactic from any point of view, but the real amazing thing is that it’s even possible in a game that supposed to be one of the best shooters ever made.
This problem is rampant in certain MW3 game modes, and the developers are going to need to find some way to repair it if they want to keep the community happy and engaged. The players in the video aren’t necessarily cheating, so the only recourse is to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
What do you think should be done to stop matches like this from taking place?

A recent trademark filing indicates that Square Enix may have more than one new Hitman game up its sleeve.
Square Enix officially showed off its next entry in the Hitman saga, titled Hitman: Absolution, earlier this year at E3. Absolution is still in development, headed for a 2012 release, but it looks like it may not be the only Hitman game on the horizon.
Siliconera managed to dig up a recent trademark filing, entered on the 22nd of December, for the name Hitman: Profession. The trademark was filed by Square Enix Europe, and some media outlets believe this could be the title of an all-new Hitman game to follow Absolution.
The fact that Square Enix Europe filed the trademark casts a bit of doubt on another new game – the company could just be registering an alternate title for Absolution. Then again, it’s pretty late in the game to be filing trademarks on a game that’s been in the works for months, so perhaps it is indeed yet another Hitman game. We know that Square Enix Montreal is working on one, so maybe that’s what’s up.
There’s really not much information beyond the initial filing. Hell, it could be a movie title for all we know.
What do you think Hitman: Profession will be?

Bethesda celebrates shipping over 10 million units of the expansive role-playing game, and setting a few records along the way.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is a pretty big deal. We knew that already, especially after watching it pass Modern Warfare 3 on the weekly UK sales charts and crash to the top of the pre-order list earlier this year. But it wasn’t really clear how big a deal the game is until today, when Bethesda confirmed that they have shipped over 10 million copies of their latest opus.
The parent company of Bethesda, ZeniMax Media, boasts that these numbers equal about $650 million in revenue. Sure, it’s not a billion in 16 days, but it’s certainly no small amount of cash. The game also broke records on Steam, with Valve’s Jason Holtman confirming that Skyrim is the fastest-selling game in the history of the digital distribution platform. It’s worth noting that ZeniMax’s revenue estimate assumes people will purchase every shipped copy of the game at full price.
Skyrim even managed to outstrip Modern Warfare 3 – by all other measures the largest entertainment product ever launched. Though Skyrim has been marred by bugs since release, most critics and gamers are giving it favorable reviews and the massive sales instill hope that developers may be more willing to work on huge, expansive projects.
The holiday season is still charging on, so it will be a few weeks before we find out where everyone landed. But look for Skyrim to have a sizeable impact on game sales this year – the one RPG in a sea of shooters. Here’s hoping this inspires more RPGs from other studios.
Did you pick up a copy of Skyrim already? Any complaints?

DICE ups the destructive ante with this action-packed trailer for Battlefield 3’s first DLC pack.
Battlefield 3 has only been out for about a week, but DICE and EA are already pushing the game’s first downloadable content pack, Back to Karkand. The DLC contains four maps from Battlefield 2, updated and imported into the Frostbite 2 engine developed for BF3.
The DLC pack promises new weapons and new maps, but most of all it promises an increase in the destructive damage you see across the Battlefield world. Check it out here:
If you pre-ordered Battlefield 3 or managed to pick up a Limited Edition by dumb luck (like me!), the DLC is absolutely free of charge and you’ll get it automatically on release date. If you didn’t, you’ll have to ante up $14.99 or 1200 MS points for the privilege of playing on repurposed maps. The pack also offers new “persistence,” which though I’ve been playing BF3 all week I can’t quite figure out. I think it has something to do with your ribbons?
Anyway, $15 for four maps seems pretty steep – weren’t we just furious about a similar price point for five MW2 maps? I guess this is the new future of downloadable content.
Are you going to purchase Back to Karkand? It drops sometime in December.

The indie game managed to best big-name opponents like Portal 2 and Pokémon to take the top prize at one of the Europe’s biggest games festivals.
GameCity is a massive video game convention/party that took place in Nottingham, U.K. last week. The festival, which is more than a trade show, is focused on connecting gamers with developers and exploring the nooks and crannies of gaming culture. Each year they award one game a grand prize, and this year a bright-eyed newcomer managed to snatch the title away from some of the biggest brands in the business.
Face with competition from games like Portal 2, LIMBO and Pokémon Black/White, Minecraft took the show’s top award. One interesting element of how the game is chosen – GameCity puts a jury together of people that don’t usually play games, comprised of celebrities and academics that play each game over a certain period of time preceding the festival. This gives the grand prize award a special twist, since it’s mostly free of the influence of brand loyalties or media hype.
While it’s fun to see an independently developed game earning some recognition, it’s also not much of a surprise – Minecraft is already a critical darling and has been downloaded millions of times by gamers that developed an immediate passion for its free-roaming content. The game is technically still in development, but look for plenty of other awards to come its way as soon as the retail version goes live.
Would you say that Minecraft is better than Portal 2? Better than Pokémon? Sound off in the comments.

Sony invests a massive amount of money into marketing Uncharted 3, which is likely the most anticipated PS3 exclusive since the release of the console.
Uncharted 3 has been receiving rave reviews (except, of course, for the one) and looks poised to make a dramatic impact on the holiday season. Launching this Tuesday, Drake’s Deception is one of the hottest titles of the year – especially for Sony Computer Entertainment. With so few games staying exclusively on one console or the other, Sony isn’t about to take a chance on Uncharted by failing to support it with a lavish media campaign.
In an interview with MCV, senior product manager Ian Vinten confirmed that Uncharted is the biggest launch in the history of the company, at least, from their perspective:
“Uncharted 3 is the cornerstone of the PlayStation 3 marketing activity this peak. We are heavily supporting the game as it highlights the kind of rich experiences that are only available on PlayStation. This will be the biggest launch in SCE UK’s history, both in terms of ambition, numbers and spend and will be supported by a marketing budget of around £5 million.”
Admittedly, I’m no expert when it comes to numbers. But £5 million, though it may be the biggest launch budget in Sony history, doesn’t really sound like that much money. Then again, Halo 3 only had about $6.5 million US, so Uncharted looks pretty big by comparison. Either way, Sony is definitely putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to launching Uncharted 3 with as much support as they can muster.
Do you think this large budget is going to give Uncharted 3 the push it needs, or are the people that were going to buy it going to do so regardless of the ad campaign?

Gameloft drops a brand new FPS title to your phone or tablet, bearing a pretty familiar moniker and dancing with Activision’s legal devils.
If you’re following game news (and you’re reading this, so I assume you are), you’re probably familiar with a little title abbreviated as MW3. Activision’s latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise is going to be a sales juggernaut and there’s not much anyone can do to stop it. Gameloft seems to have another idea: capitalize on the hype with a similar looking and sounding game. The title, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nations, is a fully realized FPS aimed at your Android or iOS device later on this week.
The game features a wide array of multiplayer maps, customizable weapons and more than a few perks that will be familiar to the Modern Warfare crowd, such as Sleight of Hand for quicker reloads and scoping. Modern Combat 3 is set for an October 27th release, though it’s important to remember that Gameloft titles usually drop for iOS devices a few days before they hit the Android market. Either way, you’ll be able to play it eventually.
Modern Combat 3 boasts full online play with stats tracking and leaderboards. The game supports matches of up to 12 players and plays out a lot like Call of Duty, with death match and capture games making up the bulk of the experience. If you’re looking for a console-like shooter on your Android device or your thing that starts with a lowercase “i,” this may be the game for you.
What’s really amazing to me is how Gameloft has managed to thrive without being obliterated by lawsuits. I guess as long as they dance around the copyright effectively, they don’t have much to worry about. It’s not like EA or Activision owns the FPS genre, and most shooters are pretty generic nowadays.
Do you think phones and tablets can provide a satisfying FPS experience? There are some that claim consoles can’t even do it right, I shudder to think of how they feel about the iPad. Even high action Wii games are shrugged off as sloppy.

You’re not sick of Battlefield 3 stuff yet, are you? If not, check out the game’s official launch trailer.
Speaking as a gamer that’s excited about Battlefield 3, I have to say that I’m getting pretty sick of the pre-launch hype. The last few weeks, we’ve been inundated with videos, commercials, trailers, demos, reviews, betas and all sorts of other nonsense, and it feels like we’ve been playing the game for months. But, since I’m a fan, I figured I could watch one more trailer.
And so can you:
I’m glad I took the time to watch this new one, because it managed to get me all excited again. That, and the fact that they’re calling it the “launch” trailer, which assume that means this will be the final trailer before Tuesday’s release. Hopefully this is the end of the hype for now. I’m sure we’ll see some media buys and television coverage, but for the most part the pre-release onslaught seems to be coming to a close. The EA/DICE media team has really outdone themselves.
I’m not sure what’s going on in this game, but it looks like someone may have finally made a war-themed FPS with an interesting single-player story. I never finished the main campaign from Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield: Bad Company 2, but perhaps BF3 will turn out to be something different. Maybe it won’t turn out to be another multiplayer-only title for folks like me that can’t enjoy a game without a decent story.
Whatever the case, Battlefield 3 will be here on Tuesday, October 24th. Are your pre-orders in? Are you ready to jump in on what is surely going to be a server-melting launch day?
I am!
