Final Fantasy XIV Server Merges Still Happening

Square Enix has listened to your feedback. Well, not really.

We talked last week about Square Enix’s plan to consolidate nearly half of the Final Fantasy XIV servers in the hopes of improving the experience of players, but those players were apparently none too happy about the plan. After extensive forum battles and player-to-dev conversations, Square Enix has made a few minor tweaks, but left the major stuff intact.

Server merges will now take place March 27. The company isn’t ruling out new realms at the moment, but is naturally waiting to see what happens after the release of Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 before it makes any big decisions.

You can log into your account as of March 1 to choose what server you’d like to land in. Every server has a population cap, so you’ll want to lock yours down sooner rather than later; otherwise you risk ending up on a random realm assigned by Square Enix.

Here’s the full details:

First Stage: From 0:00 a.m. PST, March 1 (Thursday) to 0:59 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday), 2012.

- Players will still be able to change Worlds even after applying for a World transfer.

* Players will not be able to select Worlds that are already populated with the maximum number of characters, but players will be able to move from such Worlds to other Worlds. Note that if a player leaves one World to transfer to another World, and in the interim the first World is filled with the maximum number of characters, the player will no longer be able to transfer back to the original World.

* It is possible that some Worlds will reach the population limit very soon after World transfer applications begin.

Second Stage: From 1:00 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday) to 0:59 PDT, March 19 (Monday), 2012.

- Worlds that are populated with the maximum allowable characters will be fixed and locked.

- Locked Worlds cannot be selected as a transfer destination.

- As well, all players in locked Worlds will no longer be able to apply for World transfers.

For this reason, we recommend that players complete their World transfer applications in the First Stage.

Diablo III Multiplayer Limitations Confirmed

Blizzard’s new dungeon crawler has a max of four players and no voice chat.

Diablo III is steadily creeping up on the horizon, and as the game gets closer to final launch, more and more details begin to emerge. This week’s information comes in the form of specs on the multiplayer mode of the game, which is apparently a bit more limited than most players were expecting.

Diablo III’s multiplayer will support a maximum of four players, despite the fact that Diablo II supported eight. Blizzard has also elected to leave in-game voice chat out completely, so you’d better fire up your Vent server if you want to communicate with friends. This is likely the direct result of the massive failure that was voice chat in StarCraft II.

The reason given for the player limitation is that the game would be too “chaotic” with eight players casting spells all over the place. Some bloggers are also speculating that the limit could have something to do with the console version of the game, but who knows?

Regardless of the reasons, there are your Diablo III multiplayer deets. Four player cap, no voice chat.

Pokemon Heading to 3DS?

The recent registration of the Pokémon Gray domain and persistent rumors indicate that your favorite collectable creatures may be preparing for their 3D debut.

This year saw the launch of Pokémon White and Pokémon Black for the Nintendo DS. Both games were about as successful as Pokémon games usually are, and received about the same response from critics and fans as usual. Nintendo is the one company in gaming that seems to understand the maxim of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and Pokémon is the crown jewel of their empire. Before the latest round of Pokémon games were announced and long before they hit our handhelds, Nintendo purchased the Pokemonblackwhite.com domain through Melbourne IT Digital Brand Services.

Now it looks like fans of the Pokémon brand have something new to look forward to, as the very same company has recently put a lock on Pokemongray.com. It could be some savvy web user looking to extort a few thousand dollars out of Nintendo, but it’s more likely that Nintendo is once again using Melbourne IT DBS to set up a domain for its next big property.

The site is pretty bland and states only:

“This Internet address is being managed by Melbourne IT DBS for one of the world's top brands. At the present time there is no active Web Site for the address. It may be under construction, or the owner may have reserved the address for future needs. “

So before we get all excited and start arguing about our favorite Pokémon, it’s probably best to wait for an official announcement. One can’t help but think this might be the first Pokémon title to grace the Nintendo DS; it’s pretty much the only major Nintendo franchise that hasn’t made an appearance on the device. Of course, if history is any indicator, the game is more likely headed to the regular Nintendo DS, with remastered or brand new games hitting the 3DS a little while later. That’s what we saw with Pokémon Silver and Soul Silver, for example.

What do you think is going to happen? 3D Pokémon or DS Black/White mash-up? Do you think Pokémon’s simplistic gameplay will transfer well into 3D?

MGS: HD Collection devs talk aspect ratio

Kojima Productions talked about MGS: HD Collection's aspect ratio at the Tokyo Game Show. According to them, the collection will actually be supporting the standard widescreen aspect ration.

That's on top of the super widescreen format, too. As to why they decided to go with that, Kojima Productions explained that it was the fan feedback which prompted them to included both the standard and super widescreen in the game. That way, they'll have both options available to them.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was also confirmed to be coming to the PS Vita just last week. From the TGS, we also got a peak at some of its gameplay action, such as the Sneak n' Swamp trailer.

So in case you're flaky like that, you can just switch from one to another, even in the middle of your game, withouth any problems at all. They do recommend, however, trying out the super widescreen aspect, particularly during the cutscenes, to enjoy the details to its maximum crispness.

Harvest Moon HD not in Marvelous' priorities

Not that they don't want to give it to fans. It's just that they believe fans of the Harvest Moon series would much rather see more fun created over a HD-fied version.

Director of digital content Toshinori Aoki explains, "The game has a large fanbase of both male and female gamers. I'm not sure if one is larger than the other, but we know it is a title female gamers cherish. And we really appreciate that. In the future we will release Harvest Moon on platforms we believe it will sell well, but right now we think female gamers don't favor a HD version as much as they do with having fun wiht the series."

This was his reveal in a recent interview with Siliconera. Furthermore, "Maybe this is a series that is mobile focused? Right now we're making The Tale of Two Towns for 3DS with Natsume. It's not that we're against bringing Harvest Moon to Wii U, PS3, or Xbox 360. It's just that this is a series where we are thankful for fans and we don't want to force them to buy a new system.

We want to bring it to where the fans are. Up until now, we felt the fans were on the DS and we think that a lot of those fans have gotten a 3DS. So, we want to bring it on those platforms first before we start planning bringing the series to another console. It's not that we're not thinking about it, but right now we are focused on working on The Tale of Two Towns for the 3DS."

It sure is interesting to see a company take on this kind of position, especially when the common practice today in the industry is to have publishers send out their wares to as much platforms possible for maximum exposure. While it is a rather tenuous stand, I think there's much to appreciate in their steadfastness at being loyal to their loyal fans.

While they have yet to decide on an HD version, at least Harvest Moon fans have got The Tale of Two Towns to look forward to this year.

Rashad Evans is showing you how to get into that right shape fit for a UFC fighter. THQ has released this new video for UFC: Personal Trainer showing off exactly that.

The two-minute commercial should be able to give you a quick peek at what's coming your way when it comes out later in July. It doesn't give away everything, of course, but hey, that's what buying the game is for.

THQ's making sure that they'll get maximum promotion for it, too, promising a massive marketing campaign targeting various audiences, ranging from the avid UFC fan to the "lapsed exercise male, who has put on some weight because his metabolism's slowed down but his drinking and eating habits haven't changed since his early 20s."

They're reported to be spending a whopping £1 million for both TV and online spots in the UK region spanning a full month.

UFC: Personal Trainer is coming out for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, fully utilizing the motion controls.
