Square Enix’s follow up to the maligned Final Fantasy XIII is off to a strong start in Japan. Duh.
If there’s one thing Japan loves, it’s Final Fantasy. So it’s not entirely surprising that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launched earlier this week for Japanese gamers, has already rocketed to the top of the sales charts. The game moved 500,000 copies in its first week of release, toppling Monster Hunter 3G from the top of the charts and renewing confidence in the Final Fantasy brand.
Of course, Japanese sales trends aren’t always indicative of western performance (as I said, Monster Hunter was #1 until this happened), but it’s definitely good news for Square Enix that their hardcore fan base wasn’t so upset with FFXIII that they abandoned the brand entirely. The actual sales figure, around 525,000, accounts only for PS3 versions of the game.
Some Vita titles also managed to make the list, a good sign for the fledgling handheld. Here’s the top 20, for those of you that like tracking Japanese game sales:
01. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, 12/15): 525,271
02. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3G (Capcom, 12/10): 208,427 (730,386)
03. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01): 182,418 (789,871)
04. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15): 135,259
05. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03): 112,533 (837,143)
06. [WII] Kirby Wii (Nintendo, 10/27): 71,028 (398,516)
07. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf 6 (Sony, 12/17): 61,412
08. [PSV] Uncharted Golden Abyss (Sony, 12/17): 48,224
09. [WII] Just Dance Wii (Nintendo, 10/13): 44,021 (323,293)
10. [WII] Poke Park 2 (Pokemon, 11/12): 43,829 (164,018)
11. [WII] Wii Party (Pokemon, 07/08/10): 42,632 (2,129,236)
12. [NDS] Magician's Quest: The Merchant's Store of Sorcery (Konami, 12/10): 35,068 (81,110)
13. [WII] Mario & Sonic at London Olympics (Pokemon, 11/12): 34,351 (64,573)
14. [PS3] Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru (Chunsoft, 12/17): 33,686
15. [PS3] BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend (Arc System Works, 12/17): 32,992
16. [WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, 11/11/10): 30,804 (734,046)
17. [WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii Ultimate Version (Namco Bandai, 11/23): 30,046 (100,284)
18. [PSV] Dynasty Warriors Next (Tecmo Koei, 12/17): 29,181
19. [PSV] Lord of Apocalypse (Square Enix, 12/17): 28,742
20. [NDS] One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 (Namco Bandai, 11/17): 28,406 (207,458)
Nintendo is clearly the king of the party in Japan, despite the temporary dominance of one game or another. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how FFXIII-2 is received here in the west. The previous game was the best selling in the history of the franchise, but also landed to lukewarm reviews.
How do you think FFXIII-2 will do when it’s released in the west? Also, don’t you just hate typing “FFXIII-2?”

Nintendo may finally be stepping in on one of the most hotly contested issues in the history of gaming.
The Legend of Zelda series began 25 years ago. Since then, we’ve seen a dozen innovative and engaging titles on systems from the Game Boy to the Wii. However, one thing that’s always remained elusive is the way in which these games fit together. Fan-made timelines exist all over the web, but Nintendo’s only response so far has been to refute those theories and argue that there wasn’t an “official” timeline at all.
Of course, things can always change. Hot on the heels of Shigeru Miyamoto mentioning some sort of “master document” at Nintendo HQ, the official Zelda timeline may in fact be a reality. Hyrule Historia, a celebratory book created in honor of the series’ 25th anniversary and officially designed/written by Nintendo, apparently contains the closest thing to an official timeline any of us has ever seen.
Naturally, there are no actual scans of the pages revealing the timeline, only reports from fans that have already obtained the book. According to them, Zelda splits into three timelines instead of the traditionally accepted two. Here’s a breakdown:
First Branch
Skyward Sword
The Minish Cap
Four Swords
Ocarina of Time
Second Branch (When Link becomes a child again)
Majora’s Mask
Twilight Princess
Four Swords Adventure
Wind Waker (new Link)
Phantom Hourglass
Spirit Tracks
Third Branch (assumes Link was defeated in Ocarina of Time?!)
A Link to the Past
Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Link’s Awakening
The Legend of Zelda
The Adventure of Link
Personally, I’ve always subscribed to the “Legends” theory – each Zelda game is a legend and is meant to be taken completely on its own. But, that’s just me. We’ll keep you posted as details emerge - it’s entirely possible this is the long-awaited Zelda timeline.
What do you think about the three-timeline theory? Too weird? Too complex?

The games in the new bundle are:
The entire Blackwell Trilogy remastered in HD. The private eye game puts you in the hardboiled streets of the 1930's as Rosa Blackwell tracks down a killer in this compelling and visually intriguing action-adventure game.
Eets, from the creators of Shank, this adorably crazy platform puzzler will have you jumping and awwing at the great fun that can be had with this little bit of white and fuzzy evil.
The Oil Blue is an oddly addictive and fun game about the oil trade. Now before you slam your door on the way out, the game is satirically placed during an oil crisis and you have to keep pilfering the land over and over again and managing oil prices. The game is really fun and strategically well developed with simple menu systems and
Finally and definitely not least is Dino D-Day. Nazi's, dinosaurs, FPS, what more could ask for. The game has redefined first person shooters and we will hopefully see a new trend of dinosaurs to take over the current plague (pardon the pun) of zombie mods, we're seeing.
So whilst the Humble Bundle may have burnt you out, make sure you pick up the Xmas bundle from our good friends at IndieRoyale.com. http://www.indieroyale.com/

One indie game developer seems to think the companies would have more success in the mobile market.
Sony and Nintendo are two of the biggest names in the world of console gaming, taking up a large portion of market share. With only three serious contenders available in stores, it stands to reason that two of those contenders would have a major influence on the future of games development. And while both Nintendo and Sony have seen success in their forays into console gaming, the ever-changing games market calls into question the long-term viability of consoles.
Andy Payne, managing director of Mastertronic and indie game developer, believes that it would make more sense for Nintendo and Sony to stop worrying so much about console development and focus instead on mobile devices and tablets. Speaking at a round table event for the Develop in Liverpool game conference, he offered some thoughts on how the two companies can evolve into pure software providers.
The general argument is that holding your biggest names (Mario, Nathan Drake) to one specific console severely limits your market share to people that own that specific console. If Mario games were release on the Android Market, for example, Nintendo could dramatically increase the number of people with access to the titles. Of course, they’d lose the performance guarantees that come with developing a game for one system, and they’d lose a major motivating factor in console purchases.
Payne’s main thrust is that it would be exciting to see Zelda, Uncharted, and all of the other Sony/Nintendo-specific franchises cropping up on a number of devices. Plus, the lack of need for a console would free up developmental and financial resources for both companies. I’m not exactly sure why he left Microsoft out of the loop in these statements, but I assume he feels the same way about Halo and Gears of War.
The big problem that I see with this theory is control – Nintendo and Sony’s games are designed around specific control schemes and require them for ease of play. How deep could the Uncharted experience really be if Sony had to ensure it worked across a number of devices? What about Skyward Sword?
What’s your opinion on Payne’s statements? Do you think we’ll ever see Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft giving up on hardware to focus exclusively on software?

If you want to see how your new Panda-mage will fare in Blizzard’s upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, now is the time.
Are you planning to carry your World of Warcraft character into the Mists of Pandaria? If so, you should probably have a look at how your talents will be changed when the expansion  lands sometime next year. Blizzard has released the first version of its official Mists talent calculator, giving you a chance to test a few builds out.
Of course, talents, spells, and everything else you find in an expansion are always in flux, so don’t get too attached to anything you create. The calculator is just intended as a tool to familiarize you with class changes and prepare for your first few days – not as a concrete promise of what your character is going to be like when the game launches.
Before you get too excited, the talent calculator is sadly missing the new Monk class, so if you were ready to plan out your Brewmaster you’re going to have to wait a few more weeks. Other than that, the calculator is available for all classes.
Honestly, I hope there are some big changes coming. I just went through the Mage and Shaman talent calcs and they’re pretty awful. The new tier system has promise, but not if it forces you to take things you’re never going to use. The focus on Polymorph for Mages is curious – sheeping hasn’t been important since the pre-TBC days.
What do you think of the new talent calculator?

343 Industries debunks the rumor that Halo 4 won’t see this console generation.
343 has quite a lot on their plate right now, developing Halo 4 for a legion of waiting fans while at the same time struggling to make their mark as a first-time developer. Bungie set the bar pretty high with Reach, and everyone is a bit nervous about whether or not 343 can actually pull it off. At least one bit of speculation can be retired as of today – Halo 4 is not headed to some next-gen Xbox console.
While rumors swirled about the game becoming a launch title for a new Xbox system (which may see an announcement next year), 343’s Frank O’Connor confirmed that the game is being developed for the Xbox 360 console. I sort of thought this was the assumed path the game would take, but after doing a bit of research it looks like plenty of people were convinced they’d have to wait until the Loop or 720 or whatever before catching up with Master Chief.
Halo 4 is still in deep development but will likely see a 2012 release. Details are scant on the game and 343 is keeping plot, character and other information under close guard, so for now we’ll just have to wait for leaks to trickle out or official interviews before we can get deeper into the game.

Ó

Drake’s latest adventure just blew up all over my Twitter feed. Let’s find out what some of the major reviewers are saying about what could be the biggest PlayStation 3 title of the year.
As someone that has a general taste for Sony and the PlayStation brand, I have to admit that I’m a little jealous of Uncharted. The game looks amazing, the story is great, and as much as it pains me to say it, they did an excellent job on both of the games that have come out so far. So, nice work to the Naughty Dog team and congratulations to PS3 owners everywhere – you finally won one.
Anyway, Uncharted 3 has been sitting in the back of everyone’s mind even as Activision and EA ramp up their ridiculous war for the holiday season. Last week we saw a little bit of the game through Harrison Ford’s eyes, and the multiplayer beta (available only at Subway!) has generated a fair amount of buzz. Regardless of any perceived battle of the titans, Uncharted 3 is still holding a significant amount of attention from both the gaming media and fans of the brand.
I periodically check my Twitter (follow me! @Mikedotfoster) feed for breaking news updates when I’m writing, and the last update found my feed under siege with Uncharted 3 reviews. So let’s see what the preliminary response to the game has turned out to be:
Joystiq – 4.5 Stars
They loved the co-op mode, praised the game’s excellent storytelling and graphics, and essentially said the game was an inch away from perfection. They did note that a lot of the game’s greatness comes from re-using elements of Uncharted 2, but called this more of a positive than negative.
GameTrailers – 9.5 out of 10
Voice acting is praised and the script is noted as one of the game’s strongest elements. They noted a continued lack of flexibility from former titles, but fans of the game are probably used to this facet and consider it a plus. The game’s massive set pieces are mentioned as a major highlight, but the poor enemy AI draws some negative attention. Overall, they say the game “can’t be missed.”
IGN – 10 out of 10
IGN’s review could only be described as “gushing.” They even went so far as to call the game a “masterpiece,” focusing entirely on the massive set pieces and series of high-budget action sequences. IGN says that Uncharted 3 is one of “gaming’s finest moments,” but their review seems lacking on any technical analysis and focuses almost entirely on the emotional experiences of the player.
Ars Technica – (No Rating)
As with the other reviews, a strong focus is placed on the strong character development and impressive narrative. They do note that the game dances with believability a little bit, and that the combat system still feels pretty rough in certain situations. They also mention that the jumping puzzles are repetitive, but overall give the game high praise and consider it an achievement for Naughty Dog and the PS3.
EuroGamer – 8 out of 10
Calling the single-player campaign “peerless,” EuroGamer sings high praise about the game’s execution but pulls back their accolades by calling Uncharted 3 narrow and shallow. They note that fans of the franchise and cinema will be happy with this latest title, but shouldn’t expect too much in the way of risk-taking or flexibility.
Overall, it looks like Uncharted 3 is a strong buy. There’s no room to customize your experience and the story is apparently straight as an arrow, but the multiplayer seems to add replay value and the overall experience can’t be matched. A fitting new entry to one of the best PS3 franchises, and one that should keep fans happy for some time to come.
Are you picking up Uncharted 3 next week?

Ó

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.

Gears of War 3 creator Cliff Bleszinski wants to see consoles that deliver the same visual quality as James Cameron’s visual effects masterpiece.
It’s hard to say that graphics aren’t one of the most important parts of a game. As much as gamers like to pretend that gameplay, storylines and character development are the most important aspect of a title; graphics still play a major role in forming our impressions of a game. If you want to see how graphics can still play a part in how well a particular title is received, read the reviews for Rage or Resistance 3.
Cliff Bleszinski, creator of the sales juggernaut Gears of War 3 and leader of the Epic Games team, seems to understand the desire of gamers to play only the best-looking titles. In a recent interview with Official Xbox Magazine, he noted that while graphics aren’t the most important aspect of game design, they still play a major role in telling the story.
Here’s what Bleszinski had to say:
"I'm sorry, do you think graphics are good enough? No they're not! The Xbox 360 is great, we've pushed it further than we ever have with Gears of War 3, but I want 'Avatar' in real-time and beyond. I want fully realistic CG, and are we there? Absolutely not. I think there's absolutely room for improvement."
“Do graphics make gameplay? No. But when I fire up my projector back at my house, put Avatar on - it still makes your jaw drop, it's like a giant portal to another planet. I think we still have a long way to go before we get there, and I want us to get there.”
Neither Microsoft nor Sony have released any information about their follow-up consoles, and it seem like developers have finally hit a groove when it comes to pushing the current generation’s capabilities. As long as developers know how to use the current technology to create games people love, it’s unlikely that either company will take a big chance on a new system.
It’s worth noting however, that the visual disparity between PC and console systems has never been greater. One need only look at how Battlefield 3 runs on “Ultra” on the PC to get an idea of how far behind the current generation actually is.
Is it time to hold developers’ feet to the fire and get some new hardware on the market? Do you think Avatar is a realistic model for the future of gaming?

A new service claims to help gamers find and trade the titles they love, without getting slapped by low re-sale prices. But are they for real? We sit down with the site’s founders, Rob and Shawn McClellan, to find out.
If you've ever tried to trade-in a used game at a brick and mortar retailer, you probably know the sting of the brutal price drop. A game you bought yesterday for full price is somehow only worth half that today, but will unsurprisingly be re-sold close to the original price.
It’s frustrating, but for the most part there wasn’t much gamers could do. Now, one site is claiming to have the solution to this problem, in the form of targeted gamer-to-gamer trading. This site is Trukatu.com, and I shot a few questions to the company’s founders to find out what makes this service so different from GameFly or other trade-in services.
Here’s the full interview, so you can decide for yourself:
What is Trukatu.com?
Trukatu.com is the new revolution in video game trading.
How does Trukatu differ from existing services like GameFly?
Unlike game rental services, once you receive your new game through Trukatu, you OWN it.
We differ from other online trading services in that we don’t convert your games to points or virtual currency.  Trades are also completely anonymous between users because everything is mailed directly to Trukatu, where the games are checked for quality. We even provide postage-paid mailers so there’s no shipping costs to users whatsoever.
How does the trade-in system work?
Instead of points or credits, you receive GAMES for your games.  After building a game library, users are offered trades and are given the opportunity to accept, modify or deny each one.  Once a trade is accepted, users mail in their games to be verified and swapped. Our mailers are designed to function as a 2-way mailer.  After you complete your first trade and receive your new game, you will already have a return mailer in your possession for your NEXT TRADE.
What types of games can participants expect to find? New releases? Older titles?
Trukatu is tailored to all levels of gamers; from basic gamers who just want to trade in old games they no longer play, to the ultimate power gamer who wants a new challenge every week. Our selection is based on our gamers’ libraries, and includes games for PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox360.
How does Trukatu go about matching trade offers?
Users create a library of games they have and games they want using a comprehensive search function with quick and easy browsing. Trukatu continuously compares these libraries to form trade matches. Users can also initiate direct trades to other users, where you could offer a couple of your games for that amazing new one someone else has already mastered.
How is your subscription plan built (ie, tiers like Xbox Live gold, or trade limitations)?
During beta, users will pay $10 for each accepted trade.  Later, we will also offer monthly recurring subscription plans, lowering the cost per trade.  Offering these different plans allows Trukatu to cater to all types of gamers.
Who are you, and what is your experience in the industry?
We are two brothers from Northwest Ohio with a passion for gaming. I am an IT professional and self-proclaimed video game nerd. I also love programming (Java, C#, C++, HTML/PHP/Javascript) and I've even published a Nintendo DS game on QJ.net titled KhetDS many years ago. My brother, Shawn, has a background in banking and business finance with years of management experience. I am the IT guy and he is the backbone of the business. There has always been a constant sibling rivalry between us since I’m the “younger and smarter” brother but that rivalry helps us balance the creativity and experience within Trukatu.
What led you to create Trukatu?
Trukatu came together in late 2010 with the idea to finally put gamers in control by drastically changing the way video games are traded.  The concept was designed we were tired of paying high costs for used games only to turn around and sell them back for just pennies on the dollar.  We wanted to put the gamer in control by creating a place where they could trade video games without the hassle and high cost associated with retail game trading today.
How does the inspection process work?
When games arrive at Trukatu, they are individually inspected, ensuring that they are the correct games, and they are in good working condition.  Then the swap is made and the games are sent off to their new owners.
What safety mechanisms are in place for members?
We act as the middle-man.  By sending all games to Trukatu, no private information is shared between users, and game quality is always guaranteed.
The Trukatu Beta is still open, so jump in and let us know what you think. If done right, this could be the service we gamers have been waiting for.

When the PlayStation Vita arrives in Japan this December, it will be backed up by 26 strong titles that spans different genres to cater to a wide range of taste. But is it enough to make the system succesful or still lacks the punch?

Looks like Nintendo's price cut strategy is working perfectly, for now, at least, as the 3DS continues to dominate the Japanese charts for the second week running after the massive price drop.
