Hanging out with the kids in the neighborhood, playing Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog to see who could get the furthest, etc. And we often like to say those were better days for video games. But is this reality or pure nostalgia?

Deal with it, Brazil.
If you tuned in for Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct broadcast this morning, you were treated to yet another incredibly boring video with a few spread out game trailers. However, if you managed to stick through the thing until close to the end, you’re also aware of what we’re about to reveal here on the site: Mistwalker’s insanely popular RPG, The Last Story, is headed to North America.
The game, which was published by Nintendo in Europe and Japan, will be distributed by XSEED Games. There’s no official release date as of yet; all we know is that you can expect to see the game sometime in 2012. This is the second good bit of news for Nintendo fans, following the Xenoblade Chronicles release date announcement earlier today.
If you didn’t watch the Nintendo Direct broadcast, you can watch it below for information on Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Fatal Frame and – gasp! – Mario Tennis:
Are you amped to see more RPGs coming to the Wii in 2012? Also, how awkward is Reggie Fils-Aime?

Nintendo takes another step into the present with its own digital delivery service.
The Nintendo investor briefing held early this morning in Japan was chock full of good news for the company. In addition to predicting that the 3DS will finally hit profitability in 2012 and announcing an all-new Super Mario side-scroller, the company had quite the bombshell to drop – a digital delivery service called the Nintendo Network.
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president, offer up a few details on what gamers can expect from the new service. Expect the Communities system to return, which allows people who aren’t on each other’s friends lists to play together. There’s also full support for DLC, a feature on which Nintendo has been way behind the curve. You’ll also find a wide range of downloadable games, similar to the Nintendo eShop but more robust in both lineup and functionality.
All in all, it looks like Nintendo has finally realized that if it wants to stay competitive in the next console generation, it has to dramatically up its online game. The Wii’s online capabilities were decent, but friend codes and other unnecessary complexities dragged it down. Here’s hoping the new Nintendo Network will alleviate some of those problems and make the Wii U a more online-ready machine.

Nintendo 3DS titles score the top three slots for 2011 sales.
Japan’s gaming market is very, very different from the one here in the west. Japanese gamers are big fans of portable titles, and they’re not really that into the AAA FPS blockbusters that seem to do so well in the U.S. and in Europe. With that in mind, the 2011 software sales tallies for Japan don’t really come as much of a surprise.
Mario Kart 7 landed firmly in first place, followed by Super Mario 3D Land. In fact, of the top ten games, five were exclusively available on a Nintendo console. The rest of the list belongs to the PlayStation 3, with not one Xbox 360 title breaking into the top ten.
Here’s the full list, courtesy of Edge:
01. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS)
02. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS)
03. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)
04. Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix, PSP)
05. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, PS3)
06. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP)
07. Minna No Rhythm Tengoku (Nintendo, Wii)
08. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai, PS3)
09. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional (DS)
10. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
What’s really amazing about Mario Kart topping the charts for the year is that the game didn’t hit shelves until December 1. That means that every one of the 1.16 million units sold moved in just a rough 30-day period. Not too shabby there, Nintendo. Also interesting is Final Fantasy XIII-2’s presence on the list, despite the fact that the game opened relatively weak and many news outlets lamented it as a failure.
So what do these numbers tell us about the western market? Nothing at all, of course!

The gaming luminary is developing a brand new, top-secret project for the Wii U.
Shigeru Miyamoto is a busy guy. He’s in charge of pretty much every important franchise at Nintendo, and has confirmed that he’s currently working on Pikmin 3 and Luigi’s Mansion for the Wii U. However, he seems to be working on a brand new franchise in addition to the games that have already been announced.
In an interview with Zoomin Games, Miyamoto discussed the expectations that have been placed on him by fans, and how he strives to live up to their demands. He also noted that despite the pressure to hit grand slams, he has no fear of developing all-new project.
The legendary developer is the mind behind some of the biggest characters in the industry, most notably Super Mario. Anything he makes usually ends up being well received and well remembered, but it’s been quite some time since he had his hands in a completely original property. It will be interesting to see what he’s up to.
There’s no official word on what Miyamoto is developing or when it will come out – stay tuned for updates as they roll out. In the meantime, do you think Miyamoto is over-hyped, or that he truly is one of the best in the world?

The Nintendo 3DS has a strong pre-Christmas week, moving over 500,000 systems.
It’s been a pretty great month for the Nintendo 3DS. Ever since the launch of Monster Hunter 3G, the device has been flying off shelves in Japan. Thanks to the last-minute rush of the holidays, Nintendo managed to snag 510,620 unit sales in just the last week – a 39 percent increase from the previous week.
The Nintendo 3DS outsold the PS Vita by 13%, but it’s not clear what, if anything, that could indicate, considering the relative age disparity of the units and possible availability problems with the Vita. Either way, Nintendo’s once-maligned system is making a strong case for its future.
Mario also had a good week, with fans snapping up over a million copies each of both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. There’s no longer any room for argument that the 3DS is a system in trouble – now it’s up to Nintendo to convince investors and get their finances back in the black.
In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how these big Japanese successes ripple through the western market. They could mark a new trend for 3DS sales over here, but they might not.
What do you think?

Square Enix’s follow up to the maligned Final Fantasy XIII is off to a strong start in Japan. Duh.
If there’s one thing Japan loves, it’s Final Fantasy. So it’s not entirely surprising that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launched earlier this week for Japanese gamers, has already rocketed to the top of the sales charts. The game moved 500,000 copies in its first week of release, toppling Monster Hunter 3G from the top of the charts and renewing confidence in the Final Fantasy brand.
Of course, Japanese sales trends aren’t always indicative of western performance (as I said, Monster Hunter was #1 until this happened), but it’s definitely good news for Square Enix that their hardcore fan base wasn’t so upset with FFXIII that they abandoned the brand entirely. The actual sales figure, around 525,000, accounts only for PS3 versions of the game.
Some Vita titles also managed to make the list, a good sign for the fledgling handheld. Here’s the top 20, for those of you that like tracking Japanese game sales:
01. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, 12/15): 525,271
02. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3G (Capcom, 12/10): 208,427 (730,386)
03. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01): 182,418 (789,871)
04. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15): 135,259
05. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03): 112,533 (837,143)
06. [WII] Kirby Wii (Nintendo, 10/27): 71,028 (398,516)
07. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf 6 (Sony, 12/17): 61,412
08. [PSV] Uncharted Golden Abyss (Sony, 12/17): 48,224
09. [WII] Just Dance Wii (Nintendo, 10/13): 44,021 (323,293)
10. [WII] Poke Park 2 (Pokemon, 11/12): 43,829 (164,018)
11. [WII] Wii Party (Pokemon, 07/08/10): 42,632 (2,129,236)
12. [NDS] Magician's Quest: The Merchant's Store of Sorcery (Konami, 12/10): 35,068 (81,110)
13. [WII] Mario & Sonic at London Olympics (Pokemon, 11/12): 34,351 (64,573)
14. [PS3] Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru (Chunsoft, 12/17): 33,686
15. [PS3] BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend (Arc System Works, 12/17): 32,992
16. [WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, 11/11/10): 30,804 (734,046)
17. [WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii Ultimate Version (Namco Bandai, 11/23): 30,046 (100,284)
18. [PSV] Dynasty Warriors Next (Tecmo Koei, 12/17): 29,181
19. [PSV] Lord of Apocalypse (Square Enix, 12/17): 28,742
20. [NDS] One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 (Namco Bandai, 11/17): 28,406 (207,458)
Nintendo is clearly the king of the party in Japan, despite the temporary dominance of one game or another. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how FFXIII-2 is received here in the west. The previous game was the best selling in the history of the franchise, but also landed to lukewarm reviews.
How do you think FFXIII-2 will do when it’s released in the west? Also, don’t you just hate typing “FFXIII-2?”

Nintendo: Zelda Motion Controls are here to stay
Zelda will not be going back to classic controls, except on handhelds
Eiji Aonuma has made two fantastic Wii games and while speaking to Nintendo magazine, Eiji noted that they could not go back to "button controls now," saying "so I think that these titles will be used in future Zelda titles." At E3 2011, Nintendo showed off that the new control scheme will help evolve the player experience.
The new Zelda games have been quite focused on the control schemes, even the DS versions, the games have worked their way into making sure all of Nintendo's technological advancements work with the console/handheld, rather than against it. This is apart of it being apart of Nintendo's big first party releases, but also some really well designed games.
The E3 demonstration showed the use of the Wii U tablet with the in-game inventory system. This will be amazing for immersion gaming and I honestly can't think how the tablet could be used for game's in the Mario series, but for Zelda and Metroid games, it would be fantastic. However, once the game is transfarred from the TV to the tablet, how will it work?

Remember when Nintendo promised you some free games? Well, they’re officially on the way.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program, here’s some backstory: First, the Nintendo DS was released to the general public for the astounding price of eight million U.S. gold bars. After a couple of months of terrible sales, Nintendo opted to drop the price to a much more agreeable $169.99. And, to help soothe the minds of those that purchase the handheld at the original price point, the company promised to give every early-adopter ten free Game Boy Advance games.
The release of those games was delayed a couple of times while Nintendo got everything figured out, but they’ve officially announced a real-life release date as well as a list of the games to be released. Look for your Ambassador titles on December 16 – if you live in Japan or Europe. There has been no confirmation from Nintendo’s North American branch quite yet, but it’s safe to assume the games will launch on the same day unless we’re told otherwise.
Here are the ten games you can pick up on Friday:
• F-Zero
• Super Mario Advance 3
• The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
• Fire Emblem Seima no Kouseki
• Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
• Mario Kart Advance
• Mario vs. Donkey Kong
• Metroid Fusion
• Wario Land Advance
• Made in Wario
Pretty good titles, if you ask me. They could have given us ten terrible games, but instead seem to have dropped a “greatest hits” GBA list. Nice work, Nintendo.
Are you in the Ambassador program? Was it worth the extra cash?

The legendary game creator announces his desire to change roles at Nintendo, but Nintendo vehemently denies that he’ll be swapping posts.
Last night, the internet exploded with news that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current position at Nintendo. While not leaving the company or the games industry, Miyamoto stated that he wanted to leave the huge franchises like Zelda and Mario to teams of younger developers so that he could go on to work on smaller projects with shorter development times. He even mentioned his love for the guy that created the Rubik’s cube.
The news was interesting, to be sure – Miyamoto clearly wants to work closer to the cutting edge of development, rather than as the guy who steers multi-billion dollar franchises. But I’m guessing Nintendo’s shareholders weren’t too happy with the information, because the company has issued a stern denial:
"This is absolutely not true.  There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
"He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned."
Nintendo is clearly trying to calm investor fears that the man responsible for most of the company’s success would be stepping into a position with less responsibility, despite the fact that the original interview seemed pretty clear about Miyamoto’s intent.
There’s obviously a small chance this whole thing is a translation error, but the odds of that are miniscule. More likely, Miyamoto has been planning this type of move for years and perhaps announced it before Nintendo had time to do the proper legwork with investors.
We’ll just have to see how the story plays out. In the meantime, what would you think of a Zelda or Mario project without Miyamoto’s oversight?

One common fan wish is put to bed, as Nintendo confirms it won’t be releasing either of the Galaxy games for its handheld console.
Super Mario Galaxy 2, if you haven’t played it, is joy on a disc. It captured all of the simple, bright fun of the Mario games before it while still managing to add new features and challenges. This is likely the reason for it being one of the best-reviewed games of all time, falling behind only the original Super Mario Galaxy and Ocarina of Time.
There were whispers, and indeed hopes, that Super Mario Galaxy 2 may eventually find its way to the 3DS handheld in some form or another. Unfortunately for Mario fans and 3DS owners, it looks like Nintendo has officially put the kibosh on those rumors.
Super Mario 3D Land’s director, Koichi Hayashida, confirmed that the company did test Galaxy on a small screen, but due to the way the game is designed, Mario appeared more like a small speck on the screen. This made many of the game’s levels nearly impossible to play, and created a frustrating experience all around. But, on the plus side, the company used what they learned from those play tests and designed Super Mario 3D Land to work around such problems – it seems to have worked, considering the game’s epic success.
Still, the news comes as a bit of a downer for anyone looking forward to enjoying Super Mario Galaxy while on the train or waiting for the bus. There’s always the Wii, right?
Would you have wanted to see Galaxy on the 3DS, or is it too port-heavy already? I wouldn’t mind getting a port of Super Mario Sunshine, but Galaxy does seem a little too expansive for such a tiny screen.

One indie game developer seems to think the companies would have more success in the mobile market.
Sony and Nintendo are two of the biggest names in the world of console gaming, taking up a large portion of market share. With only three serious contenders available in stores, it stands to reason that two of those contenders would have a major influence on the future of games development. And while both Nintendo and Sony have seen success in their forays into console gaming, the ever-changing games market calls into question the long-term viability of consoles.
Andy Payne, managing director of Mastertronic and indie game developer, believes that it would make more sense for Nintendo and Sony to stop worrying so much about console development and focus instead on mobile devices and tablets. Speaking at a round table event for the Develop in Liverpool game conference, he offered some thoughts on how the two companies can evolve into pure software providers.
The general argument is that holding your biggest names (Mario, Nathan Drake) to one specific console severely limits your market share to people that own that specific console. If Mario games were release on the Android Market, for example, Nintendo could dramatically increase the number of people with access to the titles. Of course, they’d lose the performance guarantees that come with developing a game for one system, and they’d lose a major motivating factor in console purchases.
Payne’s main thrust is that it would be exciting to see Zelda, Uncharted, and all of the other Sony/Nintendo-specific franchises cropping up on a number of devices. Plus, the lack of need for a console would free up developmental and financial resources for both companies. I’m not exactly sure why he left Microsoft out of the loop in these statements, but I assume he feels the same way about Halo and Gears of War.
The big problem that I see with this theory is control – Nintendo and Sony’s games are designed around specific control schemes and require them for ease of play. How deep could the Uncharted experience really be if Sony had to ensure it worked across a number of devices? What about Skyward Sword?
What’s your opinion on Payne’s statements? Do you think we’ll ever see Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft giving up on hardware to focus exclusively on software?

The games company and console maker reports huge numbers from the Black Friday sales rush.
Nintendo hasn’t been doing so great as of late, but most people figured they’d see a pretty nice boost once the holiday season rolled around. Well, the holiday season is here, and so is the predicted Nintendo boost. The company boasted astonishing sales numbers for the Thanksgiving weekend, fueled by Black Friday sales and the recent releases of two very good games.
Nintendo is reporting that since the launch of both games, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has sold over 535,000 copies and Super Mario 3D Land has sold 500,000, both with big surges during the holiday week. The Wii also saw the best Black Friday numbers since its release, with buyers purchasing an astonishing 500,000 units. I’d love to see how Microsoft and Sony did – I’m sure they crushed as well.
Perhaps the most important data for Nintendo, however, is the increased sales of its 3DS handheld unit. Sales of the device tripled in the last week, going up by 325%. The 3DS has now officially sold more units than the original DS managed to snag in its first year of release. Whatever Nintendo needed to happen with the 3DS, it looks like it’s finally happening. The 3DS will likely continue to sell well, with Mario Kart 7 on the horizon.
We’ll just have to wait and see how Nintendo carries this momentum into the holiday season. The Wii has always been a big Christmas buy, and the 3DS is fresh enough to be on some holiday wish lists.
What’s on your holiday wish list? Do you want a Wii, a 3DS, or something else entirely?

What, like you’re actually going to spend time with your family this week?
A couple of interesting updates are headed to the Nintendo eShop over the next few weeks. As of the 24th, you’ll be able to download Metroid II: Return of Samus directly to your Nintendo 3DS, Pushmo is scheduled for December and Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword is aimed at January.
The new releases are likely intended to cement the 3DS as a system worth owning, although Pushmo and Sakura Samurai are pretty obscure titles. That being said, Metroid II was one of the best games that ever showed up on the original GameBoy, and it’s certainly worth a look.
Nintendo is making an effort to bring more content to the Nintendo 3DS in the hopes of making it more desirable - the primary complaint with the device (besides the lack of a second analog stick) is that there simply aren’t enough good games currently available.
While most 3DS owners would probably prefer to see some new games released, ports of old classics will just have to do for now – Mario Kart 7 is the last big release of the year.
Is Metroid II enough to sell you a 3DS? I doubt it.

Pick up a Nintendo 3DS and one of two great games for $200. Party!
The Nintendo 3DS is staging quite a comeback. Faced with skepticism from the industry and a rough launch, the handheld device is quickly outpacing the sales pattern of the original Nintendo DS. As more games come out and the price continues to drop, the 3DS stands ever closer to success. And, to help cement this process into being, Nintendo is launching two more bundles this week.
Here’s the low-down on the two new bundles:
Super Mario 3D Land Bundle - $200
Fire Red Nintendo 3DS
Super Mario 3D Land
Ocarina of Time Bundle - $200
Cosmos Black Nintendo 3DS with Gold Accents
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
$200 is a pretty solid price point for the 3DS, especially when you consider that it’s only about $50 more than the current pricing of the various DS models. The holidays look like they’re going to treat Nintendo quite well, a good thing considering their recent financial woes.
Are you going to buy a 3DS? I feel like this question comes up every few days with all of these bundles and deals – if they make a Star Fox bundle, I’m sold.

Find out what your fellow readers were talking about in this week’s edition of the mash.
It’s been an interesting week in the world of games, with everything from a stupid PETA scandal to swirling rumors regarding the next console generation. If you haven’t had time to check in on QJ over the last few days, don’t worry – we’ve compiled five of the most commented/jumped/contested posts from the last week for your viewing pleasure. Oh! And we have a new Comment of the Week. Party!
Here they are, in no certain order:
PETA Upset Again, This Time Over Mario
This post addresses PETA’s most recent video game complaint, regarding Super Mario 3D Land’s Tanooki suit. The organization argues that this furry Mario accessory sends the message that it’s okay to wear fur, and they’ve even gone so far as to make their own game where you play as a bloody Tanooki trying to save your skin. Predictably, commenters found this to be a very, very dumb thing.
Next-Gen Consoles On the Way
With Microsoft expected to announce the Loop/720 next year and the Wii U already on the way, next-gen rumors are flying all over the place. Most recently, we learned that a major Sony studio is already developing games with PS4 specs. Comments are a mixed bag here, with some readers excited, some dubious, and some very angry with me for even mentioning the phrase “PlayStation 4.”
Final Fantasy XV May Not Be Turn-Based
One of the producers of the Final Fantasy franchise has gone on record regarding the game shifting away from its turn-based roots, prompting a mix of comments from dismayed to excited. The post also discusses the future of the Final Fantasy franchise. The franchise has hit some rocky times as of late, so the next game (FFXIII-2) has a lot to fix.
PSN Shutting Down at Night for Young Korean Gamers
In Korea, games are serious business. They have a full-fledged professional gaming scene and thousands of people line up to watch the pros go at it. With intense gaming schedules being a part of many young Koreans, the government has instituted a law that forces gamers to log off for six hours a night. Sony is obliging by shutting their service down, and most commenters seem to agree that the law has potential. Weird.
Saints Row the Third Breaks Promise of PS3 Exclusive Content
THQ stated that the PS3 version of Saints Row the Third would have exclusive content, but unfortunately no on in the gaming community seems to have tracked it down. All versions of the game are essentially identical, and THQ didn’t have much to say on the subject. Commenters mostly agree that when a company says it’s going to do something, it should follow through.
So there’s your mash-up. Read ‘em and get to commenting. And, before I forget, it’s time to hand out the very serious and important “Comment of the Week.” This week’s winner is xnamkcor, for his/her comment on the PETA post:
“’PETA claims that the Tanooki suit sends the message that it’s okay to wear fur’
If there was anything I ever agreed with PETA about, it's that furries are bad.”
I think we can all agree with that one.

Valve continues their recent trend of adding ridiculous costumes and hats to Team Fortress 2 with a Saints Row: The Third costume for your Heavy.
There was a time when characters in Team Fortress 2 looked like characters from Team Fortress 2. Nowadays, most TF2 matches play out like a gathering of the “Club for Silly Hats,” which, honestly, makes the game even more fun. Hate on the hats all you want, the same basic gameplay still fuels an engaging and often hilarious experience.
Valve isn’t showing any sign of slowing TF2 accessory development, and has announced this special costume for your Heavy if you pre-order Saints Row on Steam.
If you’ve ever wanted to charge around Dustbowl with a Luchador mask and diamond boxing gloves, this is certainly the pre-order bonus for you. It’s cute to see developers promoting each other’s games – if only more companies could get in on this sort of thing, the whole industry might be a little more fun. After all, who wouldn’t want a Master Chief costume for their Commander Shepard, or a Mario hat for their Drake?
Right?

Though gamers and industry analysts have expressed concerns over the 3DS’s marketability, the handheld is finally making headway after a rocky start.
If you’re one of the people that though the Nintendo 3DS was destined to be a disaster, it looks like you’ll have to put your “Up Yours, Nintendo” shirt away - at least for the next few months. The company has reported that the Nintendo 3DS has moved 1.65 million units in the U.S. since its launch earlier this year, after a much-needed price drop helped to boost sales.
Nintendo is hoping that the 3DS will outstrip sales for its previous handheld, the Nintendo DS, which sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months. With the holiday season pending, it’s possible they will actually meet this goal.
Another thing fueling the increased demand for the 3DS? Games. Though remakes like Ocarina of Time and StarFox 64 have helped to secure the 3DS a place in the hearts of passionate gamers and early adopters, upcoming titles like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are sure to move a few more units. Despite the new titles, Nintendo still has a serious software problem; those two games and Skyward Sword are pretty much all they have going on for the remainder of the year.
It seems like every time Nintendo releases a new console, people argue about whether or not it’s a good idea. The original DS didn’t get much love, if I recall correctly, until the Lite version surfaced, and the now-hilarious quotes from Sony regarding the Wii’s viability should be etched on the back of every PS Move controller shipped. But Nintendo always manages to find a way to make it work (except, you know, that one time) and it looks like the 3DS is here to stay.
Do you have a 3DS? Would you consider buying one based on these new titles?
