PS3 owners and EVE Online fans rejoice, for CCP’s new MMOFPS won’t cost you a dime.
DUST 514 is still months away from release, but that hasn’t stopped CCP from dropping tons of details regarding the upcoming MMOFPS. DUST 514 is set in the EVE Online universe, and while CCP has seen great success with EVE’s subscription model, the company will be skipping payments for DUST 514.
DUST 514 has always been free-to-play by design, but the original plan called for a small $10 upfront purchase in order to download the game. Once you had DUST installed on your PS3, you’d be able to take advantage of all of its spacey, first-person goodness without paying a monthly subscription.
Now, however, it looks like CCP has altered the deal. DUST 514 will be completely free to download, as well as free-to-play. CCP is looking toward in-game microtransactions to fill the gaps.
Eurogamer’s interview with executive producer Brandon Laurino has tons of information on how EVE Online’s ISK and DUST’s in-game currency, AUR, will interact, and how those two currencies work with your real-life dollars. Check it out if you’re curious.
In the meantime, are you glad to see DUST 514 going free-to-download?

Valve could be announcing Steam Box at GDC
What in the hell is Valve doing?
GDC is going on at the moment and I have a few friends checking it out, pitching games and showing off their work but with all the rumours flying around at the San Fran convention, I'd hate  to be a Valve employee right now.
The great big PC developer and probably one of the only game studios who I respect and will follow till they release Half Life 3 and with the idea of making a console, looks like I better start saving up.
Steam Box is the tentative title that everyone is dubbing it on the interwebs but i tlooks like Valve may throw their hat into the console ring and I think that the only way it will sell is if they make Half Life 3 exclusive to PC and their console...it will be the highest selling console ever.
The rumours were fueled that the company have been toying with the idea of creating a proper set-top console that could pose a threat to not only current-gen but next-gen consoles. Valve co-founder recently told the guys at Penny Arcade that if they had to sell hardware, they will. This could easily just have meant Valve branded graphics cards or just some cool memorabilia like keyboards, mice or even headphones but if they make Steam Box...the world of video games may change forever.

Well, the NEXT Metal Gear Solid, anyway. Whenever that happens.
News broke early this morning that Kojima Studios is up to its old tricks, and is probably working on another Metal Gear Solid game. The tip came through a job listing posted by the company, which stated they were looking for project engineers to work on Metal Gear Solid “targeted for high-end consoles and PCs.” Which would be business as usual for Kojima, if not for that little thing in there about PCs.
It’s been a long while since fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise have been able to to enjoy a game with a keyboard and mouse, and subsequently lecture other gamers about how much better the PC experience was than the console. This job listing essentially confirms that Kojima is eyeballing PCs as one release platform for the next entry in the MGS saga.
There’s another interesting job post regarding engineers for “network gameplay functionality,” which indicates that Kojima may be adding multiplayer to the franchise. Whatever’s going on over at Kojima, it’s certainly going to be interesting.
Would you rather play Metal Gear Solid on a PC or a console?

The EVE-universe, PS3-exclusive shooter will support USB accessories.
CCP confirmed via tweet earlier this week that DUST 514, its EVE Online first-person shooter, would support keyboard and mouse control schemes on the PS3 console. This means if you have a USB keyboard and mouse sitting around for your PlayStation, you’ll be able to use them as your primary method of control in lieu of the PS3 controller. Duh.
DUST isn’t the first game to support keyboard and mouse controls – Unreal Tournament 3 featured a similar setup. The addition of this control mode should come as a comfort to PC gamers that believe keyboard and mouse inputs are the only true way to play shooting games, and will make it easier to chat back and forth with the other players roaming the world.
DUST 514 is set for release sometime this summer on both PS3 and PC. Since it will feature cross-platform support, it only makes sense that PS3 players have the same control options as PC players.
Do you prefer the keyboard and mouse setup?

If you didn’t make it to Blizzcon, you can still enjoy some of the festivities by voting on your favorite costume from its legendary costume contest.
The Blizzcon costume contest is probably the most fun event of the weekend. Costumes that run the gamut from incredible to hilarious are all on display, and the judges often have a tough task in deciding a winner. Now that Blizzcon is wrapped up, Blizzard is giving fans the opportunity to participate in an online costume contest by voting on the Blizzcon costumes they liked the most.
Here’s the rundown on the contest, straight from Blizzard:
We’re giving 20 contestants we weren’t able to recognize at BlizzCon a second chance at sartorial glory, by offering you a chance to vote on your favorites. We’ve added images of each contestant to a brand-new Costume Contest Voting Gallery. Each contestant’s picture is marked with a number. That’s where you come in; just make note of the number belonging to your favorite costume, then head over to our poll to cast your vote.
The costumes that earn the most votes will earn a chance at some impressive loot, including cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500. Runners-up will receive a SteelSeries prize package that includes 5H V2 Headphones, a 7G Keyboard, and an Ikari Optical Mouse or a World of Warcraft virtual pet package that includes Lil' Ragnaros, Moonkin Hatchling, Lil' K.T., Pandaren Monk, and Lil' XT.
You can check out the gallery by clicking this link. Hey, it’s not like you have anything important to do today, right? I’m partial to the Minecraft paladin, but I’d also really like to take contestant #4 out on a date.

DS homebrewer HB Filou has come out with an adaptation of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system for the Nintendo DS.

True, not too many people may be impressed with the OS, considering the many bugs that has plagued it throughout the years, but that shouldn't keep you from enjoying an adapted version of it on your handheld, right? As long as it doesn't bring on the bugs, too, I guess.
This here is the first release, and we probably should be expecting some more updates to come in the future. For now, though, here are the features included in this release:
Features:
Test of buttons (A, B, X, Y - R, L - Start, Select)
FAT system: play, record and edit a text with keyboard
Change wallpaper: 3 Themes available
Position Held: As windows, turned off the system (by the console)

If you're expecting the final installment in the Gears of War series to answer each and every question you might have on it, then you might as well stop expecting now.
Cliff Bleszinski let it known that that was not the goal they set out for when the made the game. This was in response to the complaints that they got from some fans, who felt like they didn't make the most out of the storyline.
"I'm not going to defend our story here, those who love it and get it truly adore it. You can find plot holes in nearly anything, from Lord of the Rings to Dark Knight Story, like any art, can be somewhat subjective and is easy to pick on. "
Still, in the end, Bleszinski believes that they were able to do what they felt ought to have been done by Gears of War 3. "I believe we're getting better at storytelling with each effort and the critical consensus is that this is the best Gears narrative yet, and we'll keep doing better in the future. You can pick anything to shreds on the Internet because you've got the time and balls afforded to you by a keyboard and monitor."
If there's one thing about Cliff, it's that he protects and defends his games like a mother hen. Anyway, what do you think? Did you feel like there were way too many questions left unanswered in Gears of War 3 for your liking?

Wii homebrew game developer HunterZ brings us a revival of Crack dot Com's 1995 game, Abuse. The 2D side-scrolling platform title brings us a dark adventure, ironically set against the backdrop of "beautiful lighting, realistic animation" and, not so ironically, "nasty alien-like creatures to destroy."
The Wii port of course had to adopt console-specific adjustments to cater to the Wii's technology. There are a couple of ways to install Abuse Wii on your console: by SD/USB or via Dolphin 3.0.
By Wii:
Abuse Wii can run from either SD or USB. Just copy the abuse folder to /apps/, and the game will detect the game path by determining where boot.dol was launched from. Note that the data/ subfolder must be present for the game to work, and the save/ subfolder must be present if you want to allow settings and saved game files to be created.
After installing on the Wii, the Abuse icon should show up under the Homebrew Channel. Just click it and select Load.
By Dolphin 3.0:
Abuse Wii can also run under Dolphin 3.0, although it doesn't seem to run very well. In order to do this, you must first run the emulator once to create User/Wii/sd.raw. Then, close Dolphin and use a tool like Winimage to inject an /apps/ folder and a copy of the abuse/ folder tree inside of that.
Running
After installing to User/Wii/sd.raw, select Config->Wii->Insert SD Card and Graphics->External Frame Buffer->Real. Then, select Open and browse to a copy of the game's boot.dol file. Finally, select Play to run the game.
For the controls:
Abuse was originally designed for keyboard + mouse on the PC. For the Wii port, these have been replaced with Nunchuk (or Classic Controller Pro held in left hand) + Wiimote.

If there's one thing that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution developers are proud of, it's the fact that they spent just as much time working on the PC version of the game as they did with its console counterparts.
It's an age-old tale: game gets developed for consoles, PC gets shoddy version. Eidos isn't about to fall into that cycle of convenience and laziness, however, and has reassured PC fans through their interview with GameSpy that the PC version was designed on PC first, for consoles.
Said Eidos Montreal director of technology, Julien Bouvrais:
"Obviously, while console versions of the game were part of the picture, PC was also a big focus. It was simply out of the question to do a straight port of the console version to PC, while being able to keep the essence of the adventure we experienced seven years before. With this in mind, we started exploring ways to best create the whole Deus Ex: Human Revolution project -- console and PC."
For the PC version of the game, developer Nixxes developed a specific X11 renderer for the platform. Furthered Bouvrais:
"We did leverage this by adding several features you will see when you have DX11 hardware on your PC: a real-time tessellation, improved Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, improved blurs and depth of field. We also added custom support for AMD's Eyefinity (multiple monitors), and 3DHD. On another note, the user interface has been tailored for the keyboard, and mouse controls can be fully customizable for your gaming habits."
Now that Deus Ex: Human Revolution has gone gold, you should already have checked if your hardware meets the specific requirements of the game. Are you ready for it?

When Catherine finally launched for the consoles, it brought with it a hidden treat that pleasantly surprised everyone.
As it turned out, based from the hints that were embedded in the console versions, Atlus had previously planned to have it released for PC as well.
Nothing explicit was mentioned, of course, but there were a lot of hidden, racy photos of Catherine, with some featuring a player select screen. The smoking gun, however, was this supposed image of a control icon meant for mouse click sequences and keyboard combinations.
While one could argue that you could actually hook up a keyboard to the console, it remains benign to have that alternative option when the console controls are very much available.
Atlus is keeping mum about this, though, but PC gamers are probably keeping their fingers crossed in the hopes that one day, Catherine will see the light of day on their preferred platform.
