New exploit can jailbreak any PS3 firmware?

Could there really be an exploit that will forever expose Sony's PlayStation 3 to vulnerabilities, no matter what kind of future updates they send out?

Hacker KaKaRoTo claims this be true, based on this chatlog that French website PS3 Addict posted:

[22:04:23] < @KaKaRoTo> and now i’m working on something new and revolutionizing that will also take some months of work

[22:04:29] < @KaKaRoTo> (hopefully :p)

[22:08:19] < @KaKaRoTo> anyways, the theory says that it will jailbreak all future versions, but it needs probably 2 or more months of work to get it to actually be tested..

[22:08:24] < @KaKaRoTo> then need to test and see if it works

[22:10:11] < @KaKaRoTo> but like I said, I’m not interested in 3.60

[22:10:25] < @KaKaRoTo> I probably won’t release this until 3.7 or something

[22:10:34] < @KaKaRoTo> until I see an actual reason to jailbreak the new version…

[22:11:03] < @KaKaRoTo> for now, there’s no new feature between 3.55 and 3.60 that would justify it

In case the chat log isn't very explicit to you, all it' saying is that KaKaRoTo has found a new exploit in 3.60. However, at this point in time, he does not feel that there is enough reason for him to release it.

He also later tweeted his new rule: "For EVERY single person who asks me about a cfw 3.56 or 3.60, I will delay the release of the 3.60 jailbreak by a week!"

"(yes, this means that it will never be released :p.. and no, i don't have a jailbreak of 3.60 and yes, STOP asking those questions...)

So far, he reports that some 30 people have already bugged him about the cfw's release, so that's some 30 weeks of delay as promised. Then again, it's most likely because he's setti

his eyes on something much bigger than 3.60. We'll just have to wait and see how he plays this out.

Xperia Play is GeoHot's next target

His current PS3-hacking case against Sony is not even finished yet, and already George Hotz is already planning something up his sleeve. Needless to say, we're pretty sure Sony won't be all too pleased to hear about this one. Moreso if GeoHot, as he's more famously known, actually pursues it.

As revealed over at his official blog, GeoHot is now targeting the up and coming PlayStation Phone, the Xperia Play, for his next hacking adventures. But to be able to pull that off, he's going to need your help.

Yes, he's asking for donations. No, he's not asking for funds so he can find the resources to pull off this next stunt. Rather, he's pooling in funds so he can be ready for the legal expenses that is sure to come his way.

That's your ForeSight 101 lesson for your, right there.

So proclaimed GeoHot on his new blog:

"In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back. I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project."

There's a bit of asnag to this wonderful plan of his, though. The Xperia Play is officially labeled as a smartphone. By US standards, jailbreaking is allowed for smartphones. Therefore, although Sony might be itching to get their hands on GeoHot, it's not likely that a lawsuit against him will indeed come to success.

That's one less worry for GeoHot then. Guess he won't be needing those funds for "future legal expenses", after all. Oh wait, then again, he's still going through one, so maybe he can still put your donations to good use.

Court orders GeoHot to have his hard drive inspected by Sony

The latest in the ongoing GeoHotz drama comes rolling in today. A federal judge ruled on Thurday that the (in)famous jailbreaker George Hotz surrender his hard drive to Son for inspection.

The ruling was handed down by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, giving Sony the authority to go retrieve information "that relates to the hacking of the PlayStation."

In his defense, Hotz' legal representation, attorney Stewart Keller, object to the ruling on the grounds that Sony will then be able to have access not only to the PlayStation files, but to everything that's in Hotz' hard drive.

The judge only had this to say to that objection: "That's the breaks."

Earlier, said judge has also ordered Hotz to surrender all of his computer hardware to Sony. However, his lawyer was able to ask for a reconsideration, which then led up to this new ruling from last week.

The judge justified the ruling by saying that it is actually standard procedure to have entire contents examined and dredged up to be able to find pertinent information significant to the case. In fact, this is what they do as well for child pornography cases.

As Kellar pointed out, however, this is not a case of child pornography. It is of a systems hack. Judge Illston will not be deterred however.

"Here, I find probable cause that your client has got these things on his computer. It's a problem when more than one thing is kept on the computer. I'll make sure the order is and will be that Sony is only entitled to isolate... the information on the computer that relates to the hacking of the Playstation."

As of now, then, Hotz has no other recourse but to comply with the judge's ruling. He must now coordinate with Sony for the date and place where Sony's inspection of his hard drive will occur.

It sure sounds like George Hotz is in deep, hot water now. We're keeping a close watch on this case, as we know all of you are, as well.
